That’s good to hear, I just injured my shoulder yesterday. Hoping that it’s not a ligament, but if it is, I’m hoping it isn’t severely torn and can heal on its own.

@@baiihai1531 I’m actually pleasantly surprised it’s been about 6 days now, and I have almost full ROM with some pain at different points. My shoulder is still weak, but it more feels muscle sore then it does just painful at this stage.
Lots of ice, then as soon as I take the ice off I warm it up by stretching and massage which also helps to break down the scare tissue. I’m at the stage now where I stretch it towards my back stretching out the peck and the top portion of the Enron’s on y shoulder, then I stretch it across the front of my torso and feel the stretch on the top as well (near my traps).

@@emberjaxx585 My advice to you are don't carry heavy things or sleep on your injured shoulder, the rotato cuff tear is one of the most easily re-injured wounds and yet easy to heal. and i understand how you feel right now that was me 1 week ago, now i'm feeling like shit.
Don't ignore your body, i pushed myself for years and result in more serious injury. but I'm making great progress right now. Just let it heal.

I had a badly torn rotator cuff and was told by a specialist that surgery was my only option. However, recovery from the surgery was supposed to be just about the same length of time as letting it heal on its own. So I opted against surgery. For the next year, I continued to exercise, but avoided all motions that caused shoulder pain. I also followed videos such as this one on how to work on the issue. The result is that my shoulder feels as good as new, and I am back to doing pushups and resistance training with no problems. Today, I am just VERY careful to thoroughly warm up the shoulders before working out, and I am more picky about what exercises I do. Oh, btw... the injury occurred when I was 55. Today, I am 66.

After a sports injury to my dominant shoulder, I was sent for an MRI and diagnosed by a "surgeon" as having a FULL TEAR rotator cuff injury that would definitely require surgery. Yadda yadda yadda, 5 months later I was back on the tennis court, serving with that same arm, CAREFULLY for a while, and one year later have fully recovered. No limitations, pain and am back to full strength. Even the surgeon himself said there was an 80% chance of a good outcome with surgery. I'm glad I didn't take his "professional & trained" advice!

I opted out of having cortisone injections and any other aggressive surgical procedures. The bone has healed perfectly but the soft tissue damage was/is very prevalent. I had 3 rotator cuff tears and nerve damage, partial bicep tear… such a mess! I had been vigilant with PT, even though I think it may have been too much in the early days! Funny story.... i started doing some of these stretches and sleeping techniques on my own by experimentation and they do work. I don't have a foam roller so I just put my hands on the ground while kneeling and slowly slid forward until my face was at the ground or until it got sore. Then i worked my way back up slowly. It gets a lot of blood flowing and helps with irritation.

Just to help give some people hope, I injured my shoulder exactly 2 weeks ago. Initially I couldn’t move it and had it in a sling. Soon after I made sure to warm up the muscles by doing stretches. Eventually I was able to do rotator cuff rotations with my shoulder, then a little bit of weight.
Everyday I made sure to stretch out the sore muscles and tendons along with massaging them. 2 weeks later I have about 90-95% functionality with some limitations weighted across my body. Stick in there guys! Make sure to break down scare tissue, and get blood flow to the area!

Sleeping on my left side, I put my arm underneath the pillow towards the headboard with my head on the pillow above my arm and fall asleep like that. In the beginning it started to get a bit painful after a while then I would turn around, but after about 2 or 3 months I did not experience any more pain. I still do it for only about 20 minutes or so. Now, after a few years I still do that routine and I have no pain, not while sleeping and not during the day. @@MD-xl3lj what's the risk besides standard anesthesia / infection risks? I tore mine in feb and didn't learn about it til sept since mine came with no pain. Unfortunately it has caused profound weakness on my left side when it comes to overhead pressing, i.e., a dumbbell for instance. My right and left side difference on this movement (and stability) is way off and hasn't gotten better in two months of therapy. I don't mind doing two or four more months of PT but I fear it ain't gonna work. I'm 59 and retired but live alone so unique issues with this shoulder surgery make it problematic for me since you aren't supposed to drive, etc.

Some of these feel really good, especially the isometric pressure. I have had rotator cuff problems before, but this has been going on since I hurt it at work in fall of 2021. I didn't take proper care of it at the time, unlike previous times, and this year it got a lot worse when the weather turned cold. Right now, it's as bad as it's ever been, and it feels slightly out of joint. No money, so I will do some of these exercises! I find the best way to sleep with such an injury is to sleep while hanging my arm off the side of the bed. Doing pull-ups, starting with just hanging from the pull-up bar, is the best way to get long term repair. I know that pull-ups may sound counterintuitive, but it really does work.

Great suggestions! I had a total tear with full retraction of the right supraspinatus along with 50% tears of infr and teres five years ago at age 55. Saw the best shoulder only surgeon in the state along with my sister (PT), upon their advice decided not to do the surgery as it has a less than 50% success rate now once you're over 40. With surgery, healing takes 1.5 years. Without surgery, it takes 2 years. I went to a manual therapy PT for recovery, went back to square one with my yoga (power/Ashtanga), did my PT at home every day, only cat/cow, no chaturangas for 10 months. Used my yoga as therapy also, using all my Iyengar training to use modifications, listened to my body. Big shift around the 1.5 year point, at 2 years was fully healed with no surgery, no supraspinatus connection, can lift my arm fully in front, have full and normal use, retrained my scaps and delts to do the work. It can be done, but it takes a lot of PT, exercise, and proper use/retraining of the body. Friends that had the surgery are having issues. Rotator cuff surgery is difficult, painful, and not always successful. I use my right shoulder for my work (musician) and have no issues 5 years later.

@SMTFITNESS Good luck on your surgery! The ortho surgeons that specialize in shoulders told me the stats and I have a lot of musician friends who went thru it, it's a common injury. The general ortho surgeons will push the surgery as that's how they're trained and along with knee surgeries are their main objectives.. I do need my shoulder to be strong and fully functional, and it is without the surgery or a connected supraspinatus tendon. In fact, it's now stronger than my left shoulder which is having issues. Being a conductor who has to use my right shoulder up to 6 hours at a time in opera, it's my bread and butter. And I'm a big power yogi, so I've now regained all my chaturangas, jumpbacks, and handstands with ease. Like you, as an athletic and active person the healing is faster. Use it or lose it. You'll do great...whether or not to do the surgery is a personal choice. PRP can work, and I honestly thought about doing that, but never ended up needing it as the manual therapy PT during healing, plus having to go back to work and conduct 3 operas in a row basically healed me in your timeline of about 6-8 months. Without surgery. I did see another top ortho who wanted to try the cadaver graft on my shoulder and I said no thank you, it's working fine now.

    • @jrthiker9908
      @jrthiker9908 2 года назад

@@rosang7868 You should get several opinions, see different orthopedic surgeons, especially ones that do primarily shoulders and elbows. Some believe there is a window of time after the injury for the surgery, others will do it after that time. It's a very personal decision, ask about success rates and PT/exercise. If you're a very active person and willing to put in the work and learn how to be careful with the shoulder for the rest of your life you may be able to not do the surgery. But re-tears, even with surgery, are common, and some people have to do the surgery several times over their lifetimes. You can see how there are many variables involved.

I have had a torn rotator cuff for 40 years now that I got in a nasty motorcycle racing crash. Really cool crash but ouch. I have done okay by just continuing with life which included virtually everything shown in this video. Another thing that helps, on those bad days, is a shoulder brace. Just don't wear it too long, only a few hours at a time maximum.
I had x-rays about two years back and, yeah, it's still well over 50% torn. I also have scar tissue that, if I raise my arm above my head then it sometimes gets stuck there. I have to do weird contortions to get it down and people laugh but are sympathetic. It also makes a nasty crunching that makes my wife want to throw up. How cool is that? I have had enough muscle to keep my shoulder in place, only had it pop out once recently because I am old, and my muscles are atrophying. I just don't carry heavy loads on my shoulder anymore, I make my wife do it. Problem solved!
What is described helps, but doctors say I should have surgery. Nah, it occasionally hurts bad but there are no guarantees the surgery, at this point, would fix it any better. Just buck up, buttercup, and deal with life's pain. I am now old and not worth the investment!

The negative comments indicate that some people don't understand what a muscle tear is.
If a muscle is torn into two pieces, of course surgery is needed, but usually only part of the muscle is torn. If you could magically stop the pain and stretch the muscle it would heal by itself. I have healed at least two tears over my long life by massage, gentle stretching and then gradually working the muscle to improve blood flow. The most important thing in my opinion is working the muscle with many gentle movements. But as the doctor points out, you have to start slowly.

If you think the rotator cuff is a muscle you may be right with your thinking. However the cuff is a tendon, and completely torn rotator cuff will never heal itself. Partial tears are most common and can settle down over time. Most of us are walking around with a tear that needs no treatment whatsoever. I hope this is an educational video regarding the partial tears that settle down over time. This video is very basic information that will not cause harm but will not cure a chronic shoulder problem

Thank you Dr. Ennis, I have been dealing with my right shoulder for about four months now. Had an MRI that showed a SLAP tear and a second tear on the outer top half. Also, a bone spur and arthritis throughout. The Ortho Dr. gave me muscle relaxers, scheduled an injection into the joint and 12 sessions of physical therapy. I have been in alot of pain. My general Dr. gave me a steroid pack in the beginning while scheduling the others. That has helped the most but that was only 5 days of relief. I am 10 days into my injection and completed 4 PT's so far. No improvement. I also have my pinky and ring finger that are numb. Most of the time when I do any movement or exercises pain shoots down from my neck to my fingers. also, very tender in my elbow and bicep/tricep. I have been icing daily like you suggested and taking Aleve and Tylenol. I have trouble sleeping and will try your pillow advice. Is it common to have that nerve pinching? Also, feeling anxious and depressed because i am unable to do much physical activity. I am using my left arm for everything and now it has become very stiff and painful. How long should I continue if I do not see any improvement. I'm at my wits end.

I know how you are feeling. I get a shot in my right shoulder every 4-5 months due to arthritis and bone spurs and one of my tendon is so injured it is so thick the doc has a hard time getting a needle through it. And now, about 2 weeks ago I felt a pop and found out today I do have a torn rotator cuff, which I was pretty sure it was. My shoulder is so messed up the doctor says if the shots stop working it needs to be replaced. Ugh!! I just found this video and most of these exercises make the tear feel better. My doc wanted me to come back the 16th after 3 weeks of pt but heck they can't get me in until the 20th. I don't think that will help me much Lol!! That is why I was searching for help that I can do. I will do what I can do because I will not wait forever to get these problem fixed and neither should you. If you don't think your doc is doing the right thing find another!! I am very picky about my body. It they take to long or keep pushing me off they go bye bye. After all it is my body in pain not theirs.

You need to fine a doc who will help you with that pain because these shoulder problems are no joke. There are times when I have to take my Norco 10 every 4 hours instead of 6 hours. One thing is for sure do not be afraid to ask for something stronger for pain. Muscle relaxers do nothing for arthritis or bone spurs. I was working out at home a few years ago (about two) and doing shoulder raises. The weight was too heavy and my right arm did some funky move when trying to stop the weight from dropping. It’s never been the same 😖

    • @kctechie
      @kctechie 3 года назад +8

Same. About 6 months ago I was liking the way my shoulders were rounding from different shoulder raises and evidently got carried away and over did it. I hurt my right shoulder and can barely reach out to pick up a piece of paper with my right arm without severe pain. Forgetting and using my right arm to move blankets when I'm in bed is murder. 😁 I can't wait to try the things in this video. I've used a ball rolling out my shoulder and sometimes it helps for awhile but nothing long term.

I'm glad she mentions that this doesn't apply to everyone's situation. I did physical therapy, and my shoulder did get better, but I still didn't have full use of my shoulder. Got an MRI done to find out I had not one but 3 different tears. Even with these exercises, I would still get the opinion of an orthopedic Dr. and an MRI to be 100% sure. I thought I was recovering, but I wasn't. I ended up having the surgery done.

When I was maybe 10 years old I slipped on the ice and tried to break my fall by putting my hands out. I ended up dislocating my shoulder. As I grew, I had multiple shoulder injuries and frequent subluxations and now I am 56 and almost never reach above my head. I trained myself to sleep with my arms at my side and the last time I hurt my shoulder was maybe 4 years ago when I again slipped on the ice and tried to grab onto my car to avoid falling and pulled it out of the socket. It took months for the pain to go away. Now if I am going to fall, I just let myself fall. The hell with it. I am very strong, but limited in rage of motion.

None of that is a rotator cuff issue. Get checked out for a tear in your labrum. You likely have a significant anterior labrum tear. Either avoid that movement or get it fixed. However recovery is a very lengthy process. Good luck.

I tore my rotator cuff 2 years ago and 3 weeks ago I ignored the pain; I pushed some heavy weight and it turned into an unbearable pain but this helped so much. Thank you!
I had relief for these 3 weeks and today I was confident enough to do a light weight chest workout and boy was that a mistake, back to square 1.

    1. Ice 20min 4 x day
    2. Swing arm/shoulder like pendulum: bend over near counter/railing/chair -dangle arm & swing in circles or back & forth
    3. Pillows at night as prop
    4. Gua sha/ scrape front, back and top of shoulder
    5. Maintain range of motions using foam roller on dining table/counter to very slowly work/maintain range of motion (forward/back & at slight angle); stop rolling just before reaching point of pain
    6. Use ballet bar or level staircase railing. Hold with one hand and place other hand on top, pressing down while doing squat-like position. Hold 2 sec and repeat 10x.
    7. Isometric contraction: tuck elbow into side, place opposite hand on outside of arm just above wrist. Push elbow arm out while pulling holding hand in. Hold 5 sec. Repeat 10x
    8. Minimize hunching or keeping shoulders rolled forward. Press/squeeze ‘rear’ shoulder blades together to take pressure off rotator cuff & prevent other injury.
