Started very well with 4 wins out of 4. All this at the end of 1980. Then huge decline in 1981 with only narrow win 1-0 home against minnow Luxembourg in the last match, with 2 draws and a big defeat in Denmark! If one team to qualify like previous tournaments, Italy would have missed the finals.
That’s right. And even in the 82 finals they finished second in their group and only qualified on goal difference over Cameroon. But the rest is history.

Paolo Rossi was accused of selling one match, being aware of the crimainal plans and have not reported them. He always claimed to have met "strange people" but he thought they were just fans and never knew anything else. He was sentenced a three years ban, later shortened by one year: came back in May 1982, just in time to play three Serie A matches, enoungh to be part of the team which won the World Cup in July It's a longer story, I hope to have made it clear enough

Respect to Denmark - who almost always produces good teams - it was a great result, but Italy were not the Kings in 1981. Had you beaten them after July 82 then it would have been a more prestigious victory. Besides, Italy improved by quite some margin in the summer of 1982.
