    It really depends on the person, a bottle of whiskey will last 5 months, because I only drink on the high holy feast days and once of month on the new moons, and when I do drink, it's a very small amount.

      Don't get me wrong, it's not going to poison you... but I'd bet it wouldn't taste like a new bottle. The change in flavor is something that most try to avoid in expensive bottles.

    So does it matter if the whiskey isn't corked, but has a screw on top? I know that wine corks actually suck, but they still cork them because people expect a cork because old ways blah blah blah.

  • @xler8226

    If the bottles are sealed properly wine does not age , glass does not add taste or subtract taste , it's the barrels and the wood they are made from that do the aging not the glass !!!!
    Do not store wine in any kind of plastic containers , they will change the taste of the wine guaranteed !!!!!

    • @bromidedrag
      @bromidedrag 6 лет назад

      Fernando Bonanno actually, wine does age in the bottle. Slowly over time, oxygen does come into contact with the wine through the cork, which is why wine will peak.

    A great way i make whiskey last when it gets below 50% of the bottle. I have about 20 of these small corked glass bottles. They each hold maybe 5 ounces. I just transfer over whatever is left in my bigger bottle. To the smaller ones. Keep it corked and its not exposed to as much air.

    My oldest bottle of whiskey was bottled in 1929. I have others from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, all with unbroken seals that have never been opened. What is noticeable about some of these bottles is that there is evaporation over time, though unopened. I acquired these at estate sales I'd worked and these bottles had been kept in their cupboards for decades.

    Christmas Eve, 1953 my dad and a friend retrieve a barrel of bourbon they had made in 1933. They had buried the barrel and contents in a cave on the Ohio River (Kentucky). The barrel was charred oak. My first taste of bourbon ever. I was six years old! Today they'd call that child abuse. I call it fond memories of a taste that I've only found in pre-prohibition whiskeys these days. I'd give a fortune for that barrel and contents!

    In my personal experience: A bottle of Lagavuline 16 I bought 15 years ago did not taste the same at the recent ones; the same goes for the JW green. It's very disappointed to see distilleries change formulas to make it cheaper for the mass.

    • @FEWGEE1
      @FEWGEE1 Год назад

      That's because when Diageo bought Lagavulin off White Horse, they reduced it from 50 ppm down to 35 ppm, and reduced the fermentation time. They're also notorious for using tired old third and even forth fill casks..
      The quality has gone down, and the price has skyrocketed. I hate Diageo.

      Johnny Dominguez I use Wine Preserver inert gas. It creates a barrier between the liquor and the oxygen thus halting any oxidation.

    • @dalethebelldiver7740
      @dalethebelldiver7740 6 лет назад +1

      Johnny Dominguez simply blow an inert gas into the bottle. The gas will displace the oxygen or air. I thing that’s a great idea. I use mixed gasses to breath when diving deep. So; a gas like argon, helium, nitrogen or carbon dioxide should be fine.

      Exactly! I should have used "quotations marks" or a wink emoji to emote sarcasm better... The Port Ellen is just as good as the day I bought it :) However a word of warning considering storing unopened whisky bottles upright: the corks tend to get very dry/brittle, so if you want to open a bottle, store it laying down for a couple of hours to dampen the cork.

    • @Bleckman666
      @Bleckman666 7 лет назад

      True words indeed, and it was a lame attempt of sarcasm from me. Thanks for the good advice in this youtube clip! I can add that laying a bottle, that has been stored upright for a long time, flat for an hour or two before opening it makes the cork moist and less likely to brake. :)

    From what I've tasted, whiskeys tends to degrade pretty fast if exposed to air. It's not quite as fast as wine, but at the end of a month (about how long it takes me to go through a bottle), the whiskey tastes significantly worse than before. A lot of the more subtle flavors have given way to a more pronounced alcohol flavor. I've started using VacuVins (usually used for preserving wine) on my whiskeys that I want to keep at top quality. VacuVins aren't a perfect vacuum, but there was a noticeable difference for me using one than not even in a short time period of consumption. Alternatively, you could fill the bottles with an inert gas (like nitrogen), which sounds like a pain, but isn't so bad.

    • @utoobia

    • @OwlScowling
      @OwlScowling Год назад

      @@utoobia Just drinking it straight. But sensory analysis was literally my job for a long time. The more volatile flavors, like the chamomile notes in Dalwhinnie fade more quickly. I found that in roughly a month those flavors would be less intense. But less volatile flavor notes like chocolate dissipate less quickly and can hang around at full strength for a long time.

    • @utoobia
      @utoobia Год назад +2

      @@OwlScowling Thanks. I can’t argue with your own personal experience, but that’s not how it goes for me or anyone else I know. Say I bought a bottle, had some friends over, opened it and shared 75% of the bottle that first day, then corked it up for two months. When I go back to it, that quarter bottle will be even better as the whisky will open up. How much better varies. Some a little, some a lot, but they all improve. I’ve had peated whiskies that lose their peat/smoke pretty quickly, but that’s usually a 3-4 month process.

    In 2017, a friend gave me a still sealed 1974 One Litre (sic) of Seagram’s V.O. Canadian Whisky that his father had purchased back then and the whisky tasted fine, very smooth and still had an alcohol effect and we saved the empty bottle!
    No problem with it being 49 years old! My friend didn't drink whisky, but saved it all those years, till he moved.
    (The whisky had matured in a oak cask for 6 years before being bottled by Joseph E. Seagram & Sons in 1974)

    Perhaps a way to store a really good whiskey (like the 18 year you mentioned) would be to transfer it to a smaller bottle proportionate to the remaining amount? Would that help lengthen its shelf life? The amount of air in the smaller bottle could be made proportionate to the amount of the original, unopened bottle. Maybe that would work?

    You bring up some valid points, especially regarding the effect of content to air ratio inside the bottle which is very important. But it also depends on the whisky itself, believe it or not. Whisky is a more or less rich mixture of chemicals which make up the taste. Some of them are more stable at room temperature (i.e. not only as a compound which is exposed to oxygen but also in terms of volatility) than others. Smoky whiskys for instance have a much shorter lifetime after opening the bottle because the compounds which make up the rich smoky flavours are less stable when exposed to air and rather volatile. The latter is easily observed when opening a bottle of smoky Scotch. Sometimes the entire room smells like smoky bacon. In my experience the flavours of non-smoky whiskys are much more stable and therefore the whisky's quality doesn't change as quickly. My recommendation is to finish a bottle of smoky whisky within 4-6 months. The non-smoky ones should last about a year - I think you've mentioned that, so I agree.

    --[1] When I open a bottle of whisky at any point, on the same or next day, I squirt CO2 into the bottle filling it until I smell that sharp CO2 odor with my nose right near the bottle opening. Then I wrap a length of white electrical tape, which covers the joint between the bottle & the cork/bottle top. On the tape, I write the date on which I put CO2 into the bottle. --[2] The CO2 flushes nearly all of the air & oxygen out of the bottle & replaces the air/oxygen with CO2. The CO2 prevents the whisky from oxidizing. --[3] I have a CO2 tank from my beer homebrewing days. --[4] Alternatively, get a can of "Wine Preserver" & squirt that into your bottles. Richard 👍

    Some whiskey i actually like a bit better after air have entered the bottle and they stand for 6 months, it can almost have some of the effects as adding a bit of water. It all depends on the whiskey i guess.

    The only whisky i drink these daye (wednesday friday and saturday nights) is old forester 100 and jameson black barrel.
    I'll buy one of these every two weeks. Already have 14 jameson black barrel and 15 bottles of old forester 100. I'll go through a bottle 1 every 2 months or so. I just love these two. Why build up a collection, no need if something is great. Gonna buy a bottle of signet though on my birthday, but that's a 170 euro bottle, so.

    So you’re saying the ~10 oz of crown left in the bottle my wife has been holding onto for as long as I’ve known her (12 years) because “it’s still good” is, indeed, not still good? Finally! Maybe now I can dump that and make room for something halfway decent in the cabinet!

    So your saying the guy's in Austin with the whiskey vault. That has over 700 bottles. Some of which are thousands of dollars each. Would have to restock every bottle that is half gone every two years. Bullshit. Please provide a link to the scientific study that gave you this information. Because I'm incredibly sceptical.

    Haha. Just months ago I finished a bottle of Jack Daniel's no7 that a friend must've given me like 11-12 years ago. and slightly had been opened since then, I wasn't into whiskey back then, certainly not as much as I am now, but still not very fond of bourbon. However, I drank it, because I didn't let myself buy a better one before emptying. I don't recommend anyone to keep their bottle 11 years, sure tasted horrible like I knew it would

    I better start drinking lol. 🤔 a whiskey party might help with that! Great video and explanation. Might I add people can also transfer it to smaller bottles to avoid having too much air content and preserve it a little longer. I would only do this imo to an expensive bottle that I know I won’t buy for a long time.

  • @mjanovec
    @mjanovec 6 лет назад +1

    It should be added that a little oxidation can actually improve a whisky. I find there is a sweet spot at around the halfway mark in the bottle where the whisky still tastes "fresh," but has mellowed a little. Of course, it doesn't stay that way for a long time, so you either need to finish the bottle or transfer to a smaller bottle to slow further oxidation. Adding CO2 to the bottle is an option too.

    They could only take 3 bottles, that had been frozen in ice below a shack that was a ruin, the remaining bottles are still there because the billionaire that financed the recovery had to get through many legal hoops because it is against world laws/treaties to remove artifacts from the Antarctica, his pitch was he wanted to recreate that blend of McKinley's that had been lost sometime after WW1, I haven't heard if this recreated Whiskey is available yet? Might make a good vid in the future?

    Damn this breaks my heart, I have a bottle of The Glenlivet 18 & I've had it for 2 months now, I have about 70% left, I was hoping to keep it for a few years.... i didn't transfer it to a decanter & I didn't cause I didn't want to kill it.
    Doing some research, it sounds like decanters can kill your scotch...so why put them in one???
    Now it sounds like I have to rush my Glenlivet 18 down before it goes bad 😫😫😫😔😔😔
    That sucks!
    So when I buy my next bottle of expensive scotch, I'm not opening it...which also sucks, cause I want to taste it, which is the whole point in buying a $350 bottle of Dalmore King Alexander III

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 года назад +1

      I wouldn't worry about it too much it's not like it goes rotten the change is mostly in the taste and even then it's fairly mild I would not say that you have to crush your 18 it's just something to be aware of I have dozens of bottles that have been open for more than a year
