Verse 1 To God be the glory great things He has done So loved He the world that He gave us His Son Who yielded His life an atonement for sin And opened the life gate that all may go in Chorus Praise the Lord praise the Lord Let the earth hear His voice Praise the Lord praise the Lord Let the people rejoice O come to the Father through Jesus the Son And give Him the glory great things He has done Verse 2 O perfect redemption the purchase of blood To every believer the promise of God The vilest offender who truly believes That moment from Jesus a pardon receives Verse 3 Great things He has taught us Great things He has done And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son But purer and higher and greater will be Our wonder our victory when Jesus we see
This would be perfect, but for the second stanza that is played in an off key. Why do they always do this with hymns in churches? It ruins congregational singing for those not musically trained, like me.
I agree with you completely. And its not just organ pieces such as this. Big bands do it, Christmas carols are another victim. I love the melodies of so many tunes and sometimes when a musician is trying to do something different or clever they just lose the melody. I thought was the only one that thought that way!
Variations are used to make the hymns not sound boring but yeah you are correct. The problem in this case is that if a variation is too different from the original material, it should be played in a supporting tone. The organist should have switched the voice to something calmer and lowered the volume.
I just love this
The first verse paraphrases John 3:16. I love this song!

Verse 1
To God be the glory great things He has done
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
And opened the life gate that all may go in
Chorus
Praise the Lord praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son
And give Him the glory great things He has done
Verse 2
O perfect redemption the purchase of blood
To every believer the promise of God
The vilest offender who truly believes
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives
Verse 3
Great things He has taught us
Great things He has done
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son
But purer and higher and greater will be
Our wonder our victory when Jesus we see
2:16

'They' do it to make us snivel and then maybe learn to adapt...
