I just got back from a cruise this morning. And I walked that ship like there was no tomorrow. I went up and down the stairs numerous times. I felt so good doing it. The thing is I have been an avid walker for several years. So it was a piece of cake. I am 64 years old.
Hi Dave....Had some major issues with sciatica while hiking in Yosemite. Took about three weeks with daily stretching and massage to feel better. Quads and hamstrings gave me problems also. Missed my daily walks...finally back to only 2 miles a day tho. Walked in pool and stretched in spa daily. Always enjoy your videos. Think I'll take a bit slower for awhile.
Key Points from the Video: The Research: ● Published in British Journal of Sports Medicine (November 2024) ● Analyzed activity levels converted into "walking minutes" Divided participants into 4 groups: ● Least active: 50 mins/day ● Group 2: 80 mins/day ● Group 3: 110 mins/day ● Most active: 160 mins/day Main Finding: ● Moving from least active (50 mins) to most active (160 mins) could potentially add 11 years to lifespan Health Benefits Beyond Lifespan: Reduces risk of: ● Heart disease ● Certain cancers (colon, breast, endometrial, lung, multiple myeloma, liver) ● Type 2 diabetes ● Dementia ● Accidental falls (due to improved balance and strength) The "Catch": ● The challenge isn't just walking an extra 110 minutes once ● It requires consistent(!!!) long-term commitment ● Mental and emotional aspects are often harder than physical ones Recommended Approach: ● Start small (even just 10 minutes daily) ● Focus on habit-building first ● Gradually increase duration as capacity grows ● Track progress for motivation ● Don't treat it as all-or-nothing The presenter emphasizes that even if you don't reach the full two extra hours daily, any consistent increase in walking can provide significant health benefits.
One important thing that I didn't think was important when it came to walking that I'm now finding out and kicking myself for it is getting a good stretch even before my walks....My IT band on my right leg is a mess and if I were to show you what my knee looked like you would cringe so I've backed off on my walking a bit and replaced it with recumbent biking with all medical professionals blessings of course. I can share though walking though has helped my mental health, my weight, my BP, my Cholesterol and my overall well being :) Thank you Dave I appreciate these posts and videos
I just want to tell you how much you have inspired me to walk regularly. My next-door neighbour and I started about three weeks ago walking after dinner for about 40 minutes. Our fitness has improved hugely! We do this almost every night. So, thank you for your videos. You're doing a good work here!
Thanks for another great Video Dave. I just received my FitVille Men's Rebound Neo Walking Shoes. I've been wearing them for a few walks now. As you say, they're incredibly comfortable, and that wide show box makes a difference. Cheers from Gold Coast Australia.
Thanks. You're helping a lot of people. It's tough to track total time walked throughout the day when a lot is incidental walking. That's one benefit to using some form of step tracker in the beginning. After many years I know that my approx. 10,000 steps day, of which only about half are deliberate walks, and my pace of walking, translates into about 120 minutes per day. It would be longer but my walking pace is brisk on my formal walks. Am now trying for over 12,000 per day as I'm now 70 yo. and physical decline is close if not dealt with.
For the past couple months I have been walking a minimum of 5 miles a day, 6 days a week. Just bought a couple new pair of quality shoes, Hoka and Brooks, I don’t recall the model number, but they are great !! Thanks for the motivation, I’ve lost close to 20 pounds already !!!
If you don't move as you age you will rust! I believe walking will extend my life but also my quality of life as I age. I have witnessed multiple family members that basically did nothing in the last 10 years of their life and I believe that inactivity made their life shorter and their quality of life terrible as they aged. You gotta keep moving! By the way my wife has her FitVille shoes on the way.
I love your channel Dave. I'd like to sign up for the 10 minute daily podcast but i couldn't find it. Could you make it very simple for some of us please? I'm confused; is the podcast free?
Thanks for sharing this information. I'm interested in your opinion about walking barefoot, of course in safe conditions, e.g. on the treadmill to avoid the risk of injury. Do you think there are any additional benefits to this?
PS there's a lot of emerging science which points to outdoor natural light, especially infrared, has profound health benefits. As does being in natural environments. So walks outdoors is potentially huge for people who currently are indoors and inactive.
@@WalkingisFitness Yes, I'm just fooling with you. As a physics professor - half the time I'm making jokes the other half in the Dean's Office defending myself for apparently having insulted someone.

As I’m now in my 50s, I realize walking has been my favourite physical activity with the greatest reward. It helps me start and end the day.
Walk More.
Live More.
Absolutely 💯 thanks Dave!👣

Sciatica is never fun, but I imagine even less so in the middle of a National park hike. Glad you’ve recovered enough to walk again!

I’ve always enjoyed walking barefoot around the house and in my yard. I’m not sure about research based benefits, but I still enjoy it.
Thanks for answer
My fingers have never moved so fast for a notification for when this podcast comes on .

Why 11? Why not just 10? I'm a physics professor we count in 10s out of convenience. Called powers of 10-x.
Great question! I’m just sharing the research as presented.
