A wonderful guitarist with incredible tone and feeling. Sunny side of heaven is just one example of his great writing. A sad day for music and the world.
a wonderful guitarist. in college I listened constantly to Bare Trees and Future Games. Danny's playing on those albums was haunting and melodic. Nothing like it anywhere else!
I have been playing for a long time, and Danny and Greenie were a force to be heard, Danny was just amazingly gifted player and as far as I'm concerned one of the Best Blues Player to come out of England. I'm so sorry that he was so lost after Peter left the band, it seemed like after the tragedy in Germany they were never the same.
That Munich tale is almost certainly EXAGGERATED. Peter took too much LSD in general, even he admits this, and Danny drank too much. That's where the tragedy begins and ends.
@@bjr4567 Danny was always very nervous, even before he joined Fleetwood Mac. A few years ago, I managed to track down Trevor Stevens, who played bass with him in the band Boilerhouse when he was a teenager, and he confirmed this.
So many incredible Kriwan songs were so overlooked. Sands of Time from Future Games, Jewel Eyed Judy, Tell me all the things you do. One of my favorite guitarists of all time.
Heard the sad news that Danny Kirwan had passed on the same day that my daughter and I were attending a Yardbirds concert in Tucson. We had a toast to Danny in a pub. What beautiful songs he wrote and played especially on Kiln House and Bare Trees. RIP Danny.
It's tragic that we've lost Danny Kirwan. Although he lived until the age of 68, he only had a very short recording career. He is one of my heroes, and it's a shame that he never gave us more of his beautiful music. RIP Danny Kirwan 1950-2018.
So sad ... What a beautiful, shy and immense talanted guitarist Danny was. I saw Fleetwood Mac in my hometown Umeå in the north of Sweden March 28 1969. They actually played in my school assembly hall! I never will forget when the whole band made their way through us - the waiting audience, outside the hall - queezing themselves through the entrance doors! Suddenly my girlfriend Monica stretched out one arm and touched Danny Kirwan's hair, ruffled it slightly and yelled: "Oooh - You are sooo Cuuute!". Danny looked at her, both shy and almost a little scared, but the smiled quickly and went into the assembly hall. My friend Curt had spent the whole day with the band since he was photographer at the local newspaper Västerbottens Kuriren, showing them our town and even having lunch together. (My God! I'm so jealous!) We three sat on the first row, Curt snapping lots of fantastic pics of the band. I was almost mesmerized by Dannys playing, his intensive concentration on his Les Paul, his blond hair moving around with his head shaking, his fantastic sound and vibrato and his perfect connection to Peter Greens sort of "supporting" warm guitar riffs. It actually felt as if Green promoted Danny to take the front seat, something he managed with flying colours. A memory for life. I wonder if Danny ever remembered that Beautiful Nordic Swedish girl with long Blond hair, Green eyes and freckels who touched his hair ... If so, I'm a little proud because it was My girl ...
So sad to learn that Danny has left us. He was always my favorite part of Fleetwood Mac, really the soul of the band while he was a part of it, with hauntingly beautiful songs like "Dust," "Sands of Time," "Woman of a Thousand Years," and "Dragonfly."
I just stumbled upon this video a few minutes ago, purely by chance, and it broke my heart. I only "discovered" Danny about six months ago, and since then I've been obsessed with trying to learn to play some of his and PG's songs ("Something Inside Me," "Albatross", and--most symbolically touching regarding both men--"Dragonfly," etc.) on guitar. Clearly Danny's life as difficult from the beginning--I hope he has some peace and comfort now, and I hope he had some sense of how much his songs and his playing were loved.
Still to this day Danny Kirwin's creativity with Fleetwood Mac moves me deeply. So sorry he lived in difficulty and props to Mick for reaching out to take care of Danny.
To me there was always so many “what if’s “ to this talented but tormented guitarist. Still his body music will live on, even if he can’t. Here’s hoping you’re finally on that sunny side of heaven Danny. RIP
Sad news, I really enjoyed what Danny contributed to this legendary band, Fleetwood Mac. He was a young protégé to Peter Green and he blossomed into a fine guitarist and song writher through some of the best years of the band. RIP Danny Kirwan.
I used tom know Danny when he lived in a hostel for the homeless in London (St Mungo's) He was at peace with himself and with the world. I gentle guy, RIP
Thank you John for the words on Danny Kirwan. Wish you had mentioned some of his work on those three FM lps after Peter left. He was a huge part of their sound with gems like Sands of Time, Sunnyside of Heaven, and Woman of a 1000 years and rockers like Station Man, Child of Mine, Bare Trees, Tell Me All The Things You Do. He had a way of playing Rockin' Blues/Blues guitar that made you just feel every note. One of my all time favorite musicians and songwriters. May he rest in peace.
Danny is one of the saddest stories from a beautiful guitarist. His singing and guitar playing on "Child of Mine" still gives me chills. "Sunny Side of Heaven" will be played at my funeral. Then maybe he can play it for me if we both made the list.
Just plain loved Sunnyside of Heaven,...also loved his work with Bob Welch, his style and guitar tones were so melodic and somewhat ethereal at times. Loved ya Danny, R.I.P. my friend.

The album Future Games is a favorite album of mine and one (main) reason is the big part Danny Kirwan played on that album. He was a great songwriter and guitar players, that's for sure.

There's a live video on this site with the original FM and Danny and Peter Green were jamming off each other - brilliant. And I think Danny was barely 20 years old.
i carried on buying fleetwood mac albums after peter green left largly because of danny kirwan's music. the group could easily have slipped into the blues-based heavy rock that was extremely popular then. fortunately that couldn't happen with those band members and at that time kirwan was a leading creative force with his melodic guitar playing and often poetry based songs.the two albums he recorded with [the also very important] bob welch show a successful development of that style.
I loved Danny's guitar playing. The first FM album i bought was Kiln House just after it was released because of Station Man. This made me a huge fan. Another fave was One Sunny Day, originally from English Rose. RIP, Danny.
I recently bought the English Rose CD. It contains three of Danny's best - Something Inside of Me, Without You and Jigsaw Puzzle Blues. He also played on Albatross - which appears at the end. Something Inside of Me almost moves me to tears every time I hear it. It should have been released as a single and I don't understand why it wasn't. I'm pretty sure that it would have been a hit.
I was SO fortunate to have been able to see the 'Future Games' line-up twice on tour (and each time from only 30 ft away!). One time for 'FG' and the second for 'Bare Trees'. That first time, I was especially blown away by the band, the wonderful songs, the overall energy... but most especially by Danny's playing. (IIRC, it *might* have been their very first gig in the USA supporting that album, playing at a large club in Rockaway Beach on Long Island.) Anyway, the very next day, I went out and bought 'Future Games', and right away, I was stunned to not only recognize all the songs (IIRC, they'd done the entire FG album plus more), but *even Danny's solos*; those were that much a part of each song, and he had obviously performed them as such (but, to be sure, there were improvised moments, as well). For me, that experience was such an indication of his innate melodicism on guitar, and it made a huge impression on me. To this day, he has remained one of the main influences in my own guitar playing and a huge hero of mine. What a touch, what a tone... R.I.P. Danny. Play on...
Danny was far more a perfectionist than improvisor. That he could jam as well as he did is further credit to his playing chops, and tutelage under Peter Green.
Danny was a great player and musician, he will be missed, I'm sorry that he was never the same after the events in Germany with Peter Green, it sounds like his life became a living hell after leaving Fleetwood Mac. One of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs is the instrumental Jigsaw Puzzle Blues written and performed by Danny Kirwan, better than Albatross IMHO. RIP Danny Kirwan
Bob Welch's health failed him at age 66, to the point that he took his life in Nashville, TN. Alas. Mac guitarist Bob Weston died at age 64 in North London. Bob Welch's health failed him at age 66, to the point that he took his life in Nashville, TN. Alas. Mac guitarist Bob Weston died at age 64 in North London. Original FM bassist Bob Brunning passed away in London at age 68. So Danny's death also at age 68 is not really out of the norm. In essence, they all left us too early. -- Rest in eternal peace DK.
RIP Danny Kirwan!
Along with the songs that were mentioned in this video, some of my favorites that Danny Kirwan had a hand in were Child of Mine and Bare Trees off of Bare Trees lp. Station Man and Jewel Eyed Judy from Kiln House. RIP Danny Kirwan.
Love old Fleetwood Mac
Danny was the best his kiln house work was pure dynamite rock and roll.
I agree totally and you hardly ever hear any mention of kiln house.
