  • Let's go behind the scenes to see how the lighting is set up on the On30 Thunder Mesa layout. I use a combination of directional track lighting and LED strip lighting to keep the layout looking its best for both photos and in person! This video is more of a "why-to" than a "how-to," with thoughts on lighting for dramatic and thematic effect and why it's so important to pick a light direction and time of day for your scenes.
    Thanks for watching, amigos!

The before and after is surprisingly noticeable, it really did remind me of the Technicolor western. Very insightful video, thanks for sharing. It will come in handy for a diorama scene I'm planning. Awesome!

I like the idea of being able to change the time of day, with the led strip, neat 👌, thanks Dave.

Dave, I really haven't paid much attention to lighting on my layout. I need to change my thinking on this! Thanks for your input!!!.

Great video Dave, so many people overlook lighting and don't show off their hard work to its best! Then only fluorescent tube-lit layout I have seen that looks good is Chris Brimley's Hudson Terminal, and that's because he is specifically modeling a gloomy overcast day. One thing to keep in mind is Color Rendering Index (CRI), once you move away from incandescent bulbs, there are many ways to mix up a given color temperature, and not all of them show colors in their true form. can't wait to see what you do with the RGB strips!

Wow. Very enlightening! (Sorry had to) stuff I'd never thought of for lights. I knew about the LED down lighting. But the blue strip of LEDs definitely fills in and balances out the scene on video.
I hopefully can get down there and see the layout in person

Dear Dave, very cool episode, love your explanation on layout lighting. Beautiful to see how the strip adds such warmth to the layout. Curious for the effects of the RGB version. Cheerio

In my house I have Literally dozens of can look lights. Through trial and experiment I finall decided 50% warm bulbs 50% daylight bulbs. As some bears once said. Not to hot, not to cold, just right… I do like your blue led strip for night lighting, that’s cool.

Very interesting, the use of the colored led strip is quite novel. My tiny one module layout has only overcast 4000-4500K LED strip (not too warm, not too cold), but I also installed some RGB strips: blue is indeed great for night, and red give this sunset/sunrise feeling. Spot lights would be neat, but it's hard to place them.

Any lighting tips for those of us with much smaller layouts?

All of the same ideas apply, just in a smaller space. They do make petite track lighting that can even be hidden behind a valance. It's all about light temperature and direction.
