    Becky, you've built a wonderful homestead. Please, please disregard all the negative comments. Funny how these same people won't go to other homestead/farming websites with their comments. They only attack people who are unashamedly happy. Thanks for all you do.

    A 16x16 pen for a pig is pretty small if you ask me. They'll turn it into mud real fast and it will smell bad. If you don't want a lot of fat on a feeder pig, one thing I've experienced and have done lately is pasturing them. It helps a lot keeping the feed cost down. They forage for whatever they can find, keeps them active and let's them do their instinctional ways of foraging and rooting. Of course setting up some electrical fence or fence panels takes time but you could always use it for a next round of pigs and it'll benefit so you don't have to deal with a muddy area or the smell. Typically 6-8 months and you got your self a nice 200-250 lb feeder pig. You want to feed for flavor, feeding too much of one thing will affect the flavor in the meat, say too much bread will not only affect the meat but the pig will have lots of fat on em. I personally like pastured raised hogs with supplement of grain. The longer you keep the hog the bigger the cuts you'll get, of course just got to watch how you feed them. Don't want them too fat nor too skinny.

    For all those people saying Becky is cruel, she is actually very genourse to all her animals. For the pig he has enough space, enough food, enough fun, so this is a very happy pig and she's not factory farming. Of course people have their say whether or not to eat meat or not but i buy my meat free range. so at least the pig has a nice life before death

      Ignition Humans are persons, meaning they have a sense of self, a feeling of their own being over time, bring able to reminisce on the past and realize they were the same being who lived before, and plan into a future, setting up goals lasting decades into the future.
      No other animal can do this. They live in this exact moment, and are only concerned with "now". That's why you are doing a person a wrong when you kill them that you aren't doing to a non-person, like a pig.
      My ethixs are courtesy of Peter Singer, father of the animal liberation movement. Unlike most vegans and vegetarians , he lives in the real world and sees that mentally capable humans are different.

      We don't eat vegetable humans because humans have wishes or their families do, and humans were never meant to be cannibals, it's unhealthy. We ARE natural meat eaters, and it is healthy for us.

      Frentus thyuni because Becky is super cheery about killing animals. I recommend that you rewatch the video but replace these precious pigs with dogs and you might understand why people would think that Becky is acting slightly psychotic.

    • @SterlingKato
      @SterlingKato 7 лет назад +5

      She's more cheery about raising an animal in an environment where they can eat what they want when they want and in the end she can sustain herself by doing so -- Instead of contributing to the already grossly engorged meat marketplace that's consuming the US alone today. Those pigs are crammed into small spaces, force-fed crap routinely, and no nothing other than the lights above their heads.
      She's happy because she lives a subsistence lifestyle -- look it up. Many people around the world do so and yes, it can often mean raising animals to eat. You may not like it because it doesn't meet your controlled view of how people should live but it is what it is.
      It's not psychotic to raise animals for eating humanely -- it's been done for millennia and is still done in many places.
      "I recommend that you rewatch the video but replace these precious pigs with dogs and you might understand why people would think that Becky is acting slightly psychotic" -- It's her personality. She's naturally that way. Some people are like that.
      Also, who wouldn't be happy about being able to sustain themselves by their own means knowing where their food comes from, how it lived, and how well it was treated?
      As a farmer or someone who lives a subsistence lifestyle you learn to separate animals that are pets from animals that are for food/eating so it is easier to understand that one is not one you grow attached to. It doesn't mean you love them any less or treat them like garbage. It means you treat them well and give them a good and gregarious life to where when the time does come and end it's not a life lived unwell.
      Your judgement upon these kinds of things denotes a very basic way of life for many people in many parts of the world. A lot of people depend on their own means to survive and even if you don't like it, as I said -- it is what it is. Respect those who choose their lifestyle even if you do not like or understand it.
      It doesn't make them mentally unstable or 'psychotic', if anything makes them value life all that much more knowing what goes into keeping it healthy and happy.
      Also, I am pretty 100% positive any 'killing' is done humanely and the animals are not tortured or left to bleed out while watching their life drain down a gutter like PETA would have you believe. Most farmers and butchers believe in humanely ending the animal's life as quickly and as cleanly as possible. It's a matter of respect not only for the animal but for the person who raised it.
      TL;DR -- Judgement is easy when understanding is fleeting. Becky's way of life may not suit you but that does not make it immoral or 'insane'. Many people live this exactly same way around the world.

      Sterling Kato so answering honestly... would you be ok with her raising dogs and cats to be butchered because it's her livelihood? How about working towards another source of income that doesn't contribute to the suffering of these gentle, intelligent animals? She also has another video titled something along the lines of, prices to butcher a hog.. which she films speaking happily whilst standing behind a bunch of dead animals. She is disconnected from the idea that her animals have undergone a brutal death to pay for her lifestyle..and I don't blame her. Along with most of the population she's been conditioned to think it's fine and dandy.

    • @SterlingKato
      @SterlingKato 7 лет назад +3

      If it's her lifestyle, yes. Also, what is this notion of always being like "What if it was cats or dogs?" as if that's some how going to pull the strings? People eat cats and dogs around the world too and just because I own them as pets and would never think of eating them doesn't mean I can condemn those that do. Especially if they do it to sustain themselves and raise the animals with care and respect. The animal species makes no difference imo.
      I'm not going to agree to shaming someone because of their lifestyle.
      I'm vegetarian but I respect that people people eat meat and honestly I am more grateful for people who raise their animals kindly and give them a good life than I am for people who buy supermarket meat.
      People watch her videos to get a basic understanding and advice if they're interested in a similar lifestyle. It's silly that people come here just to get upset about it and get mad at someone for their lifestyle because they don't agree to it.
      You have no idea how 'brutal' the death was, that's entirely speculation on your part which doesn't mean anything.
      I too was once under the impression that it was cruel and brutal and that these animals suffered horrible deaths. However, I've been friends with organic farmers who have raised meat animals, I've seen the process, and truth be told -- once you understand the truth about it it's not some PETA horror story they make you believe. I still won't eat meat because I don't believe in eating meat, but I don't find any reason in shaming people who do.
      For every level of sustainability there's always a level of discomfort. You don't have to agree with the lifestyle but it *should* be respected as someone's choice.
      Her videos aren't made for people who find this kind of lifestyle deplorable to horrible, and yet people who do seem to flock here and try to start some rage war about it lol
      Makes no sense to me tbh.

    • @bieberwriteable8733
      @bieberwriteable8733 7 лет назад

      Sterling Kato I hear you, but if you believe that killing animals is wrong, there is no convincing me to respect a person's decision to kill an animal. I speak out because I refuse to stay silent about something so huge, something that affects billions of animals AND humans in the world. I am speaking out because I truly believe that if people confronted their cognitive dissonance and saw how their meat was killed, that it would change their food decisions. Those PETA horror stories do happen.. and they will continue to happen until we stop abusing our power over animals. It will never be enough.. not until every animal is free from us. Just like it will never be enough until every child is freed from sex trafficking or every home is free from abuse. If we follow your logic, it would be ok for me to own slaves if it was part of my lifestyle? Of course not. I understand that people don't share that opinion because they haven't seen the full picture, so I don't judge them for that. I judge them for not educating themselves on such an important topic.

    I guess living in a city has made some people very ignorant.
    Face it, this is country life. You grow your own food. Whether its a vegetable that starts as a tiny sprout or an animal that you watch to grow up from a little baby, it's all for the purpose of food. If your way of getting food is jumping into the car and taking a trip to the supermarket then you're out of your element here and I don't expect you to understand it. I can say with confidence that some peoples' "pets" are more miserable being cuddled and overfed than this pig is.

      Usually because people lack the skill and would end up with significantly more wastage, which is a disrespect for the animal and reduces your total meat production. Done wrong, you can damage or contaminate the meat.

    Hi Becky! I appreciate the video; very informative. We raised our hogs to have the extra fat so we would have it to add to our deer meat and, though I haven't done this, to render for lard which can be used for cooking and soap making. Cattle fencing is easy since they will typically respect a single strand of electric fence. Then you can move it around to give them access to fresh grass. But you are definitely correct in saying they are more expensive and need a larger area. They also need to be finished correctly or the meat is just tough! So extra work and expense for cattle. Thank you for these videos! I get excited each time you load a new one! Thank you for sharing your life and knowledge!

    You have worked so hard to get here and build your own home, please ignore these rude comments. Even if she was vegan, she would be hurting plant life. Basically, whatever we eat, has some life that died to get it. She isn't a murderous human, first of all. The hog had a good life, also. It had plenty space, plentiful amount of food to get big enough to go to butcher.

    • @TheXxxprotogirlxxx
      @TheXxxprotogirlxxx 8 лет назад

      first of all plants arent sentient and they don't feel pain like animals do and pigs are as smart as dogs second of all you actually consume more plants indirectly by eating animals because they need to eat plants and then you eat them so baisicly even if plants did feel pain (which they dont) being vegan would still be a better option, your opinion of her would drastically change if she was keeping dogs and killing them like that eventhough pigs are just as smart as dogs

      Studies comparing dogs to pigs were seriously flawed. Recent studies of dogs intelligence and awareness shows that dogs are far more intelligent than first thought. Not only do dogs have a sense of self that earlier studies said they didn't but pigs did but studies of dogs in various lighting shows that they comprehend when humans could and couldn't see them. To see the world from the perspective of a different species and act accordingly is pretty rare.

    Dear Becky I enjoy your show but may i help you with some terms a piglet is either a gilt or shoat (castrated male) as per amish and old farmers. A pig can reach butcher weight in six to eight months, more like 6. That is 250 lbs. Over 300 lbs. Your right you start to get lard. But this is good for cooking and lye soap. A young beef or dairy castrated bull calf is called a steer. At between 42 and 52 days if butchered is a veal. Between 52 days and 18 months they are baby beef and over that they are beef. You've got a great price for your piglet i pay 40 each and ordered 5. Its usually to have two becsuse the don't waste so much feed " competition". Non steers can cost " jersey" 125 at birth. Others are higher but Jersey have better marbling. Just a few thoughts. Love your show.

    I just want to address 2 things. First, people are going to eat meat whether or not we vegans and vegetarians tell them they shouldn't. That being said, wouldn't you rather people eat meat that was humanely raised? Factory farming is horrible. Many other countries do not allow the importation of meat from the United States because of how unsanitary it is and the cruelty of it. It is a miserable life for these animals. No matter how many people I have told this to, they don't care. That being said, they are still going to eat meat, but wouldn't you rather the animal have a good life and was not tortured until it died? Just google factory farming and look at the cage pigs are placed in that is the size of their bodies. I commend people for raising their own meat instead of supporting factory farming. I have my own personal beliefs why I won't eat meat or animal products, but this is the next best thing ;-).
    My second comment will be listed under this because of the character limit....

    • @seekingknowledge8235
      @seekingknowledge8235 8 лет назад +2

      Second, plants do not have the advanced central nervous system that those in the subphyla Vertebrata do, hence they cannot feel fear or pain. Until botanists prove otherwise, & they would laugh at the pseudoscience behind having to do so, that is the most illogical comment one could make. In fact, children understand that concept & it is only something I hear from adults. Most vegetarians & vegans don't choose to abstain from eating something only because it it "living", because then they wouldn't even eat plants & then that childish argument might make sense. They choose not to eat something because of the fear & pain it has to go through just so we can eat it. They see the suffering & they want no part of it. Again, that is most of them. Everyone has their own reasons. Now, I won't change a meat-eaters mind & they won't change mind, so please no responses either way, or responses about the metaphysics behind life. They just get annoying and will be ignored & misunderstood.

In return i give them one free pig a year for their annual BBQ. No biggie for me since I raise pigs and they have up to 18 piglets per litter. It is a grand deal for all parties concerned. Check out my vid on it here in Chile. I am sure you can find a school that would help you Maybe a private school would be easier to deal with. Also my barrels are new and clean with sealing lids, so the school is happy to help and it also creates less waste. My pigs lov, LOVE slop. BTW my wife wants fat pigs so she can make soap. As a city girl wishing she were country, I'd like to learn more. Can you do a video on how the animals get butchered? How do you keep from getting attached? Etc. I eat meat so I know this is much more humane and healthy. But I wonder if I could do it. I'd love to see a video of that.
    ETA: not the actual butchering but just an explanation of the process they use.

    Umm I love your channel first video but I’m not trying to show off or anything but well around where we live which I understand there r different prices for where you live but for a really little cow aka a calf to get one where I live is only about $50 but that’s for a dairy calf so I would agree with about and angus or like Hereford or something would be in about that price range

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 9 лет назад +1

      +TheGodApollosFarts Chickens take years to stop laying. Some could still be considered good layers at 4 or 5 years old. Generally the max age for meat chickens is like 13 weeks, 16 for layer breeds like hers. And chickens only start laying at around 17 weeks, so that's not realistic. They would be way too tough if she waited.

    Some people may think Becky is not being humane because she personally raises an animal to butcher. But as gross that this may sound that is a part of life, If that pig was in the wilderness he would be taken down by cougars, coyotes, wolves, or some other predator. They would actually eat the pig alive. While hunting in Georgia a few years ago I saw several wild dogs eat a deer from the hind quarters act the animal screamed in pain. I may not humane to some of you but I shot two of those wild dogs (about seven got away) and then the deer, whose guts were spread on the ground. Hunters are not the bad evil individuals many may think of us. Thank you Becky for your videos.

  • @mayaportland8805
    @mayaportland8805 9 месяцев назад

    Cows love their owners and are about smart as a dog, so I would never be able to raise one and take her to butcher.
    But I can eat beef from the store or a farm.
    Same with bunnies and lambs.

    I remember when I was a little girl I went to a farm and there was a hog who had to be 700ibs. It was in a big pen, about the size in this video. It scared the crap out of me ! I still remember how huge it was, he was massive. He jumped up on the edge of the pen to see me and he was taller then my dad who is 6ft. Would you ever raise one of your pigs to be that size? just curious! Love your video' s ! love from Toronto!

I think I'd have a hard time killing an animal that we've been around for awhile, discovering it's personality etc. I've heard that pigs are smart too... Do you ever have trouble with that, remembering these animals are food and not pets?

    • @SandyzSerious
      @SandyzSerious 9 лет назад +1

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  9 лет назад +8

      That hog does not have some deep, rich, engaging personality. All it wants from me is food and more food. It does not like or love me. It likes and loves food. I know how to make it happy....feed it!

    • @SandyzSerious
      @SandyzSerious 9 лет назад +3

      +SandyzSerious Actually eating meat, causes a lot of disease in the body and also causes you to age earlier. You have all that room out there to grow beautiful organic fruits and veggies which are healthy for the body, as you well know. You would also lose a tremendous amount of weight and have much more energy.
