  • In Disney’s "Mary Poppins Returns," an all-new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt (“A Quiet Place,” “The Girl on the Train”) stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light-and life-to the streets of London. Actor Ben Whishaw joined BUILD to chat about the highly-anticipated movie.

    Saw him twice on stage and a lot of his films and was blown away how versatile he actually is. Always thought, how underrated he was in fact. Absolutely loved his performance in London Spy and his Q in the Bond franchise. And today he got a well deserved Golden Globe nomination for his outstanding performance in A very English scandal! He’s also an absolutely kind person.

    Dude, his hair.....PERFECT!!!!!
    Also, the way he described this film as hopefully being a "companion piece" to the original and still stand on it's on is what any genuine, sincere remake/reimagining should shoot for was brilliant. ;-)

    Ben is just so talented and such a sweet heart. His body language is almost painful, he is clearly exhausted, and not completely comfortable, curled in on his centre. But he is articulate and just so awesome.

      He's been around for years and I doubt he's going anywhere...a lot of his projects are UK produced and aren't necessarily marketed heavily anywhere else., or they're just not huge projects. I'm a fan of his too and I think it's just a matter of checking his imdb page to see what he's up to.

      @@Sab_MJsMama I don't know why you would assume I'm not familiar with his other work, but I'm well aware that he didn't just appear out of nowhere and he's a seasoned theatre actor (which means that the majority of his roles cannot actually be found on his imdb page).

    I love how both Ben and Emily M have credited the original actors who played their “parents” for being the ones they took inspiration from for their own performances. It makes me happy seeing as both of those actors have always been sort of underrated and forgotten.

    The interviewer is in love with the sound of his own voice and bulldozes the conversation. And Mr. Whishaw is too polite and thoughtful (and probably exhausted) to assert himself. (It isn't until about halfway through that Forte pumps the brakes a little and pays closer attention to his guest.) I could listen to the brilliantly talented Ben talk about his work all day, but not in this setting.

    @Sab_MJsMama 5 лет назад +9

    Only thing I didn't quite like in this interview from Matt was there were a lot of repetitive super probing question about Mary Poppins when there should have been a few more questions about his older projects. This may be because he wanted to stretch out the interview or because he's only supposed to ask Ben W. about this role to promote Mary Poppins but still...even I was getting a bit antsy for BW.
    I've seen Matt's other interviews previously and he's usually a pretty fun and relaxed interviewer but this one, I don't know, maybe HE was uncomfortable.

    All I have to say is that Ben Wishaw as Michael Banks spoilt the film for me. Am I the only one who feels like this? It's simply that he can't look more different from Matthew Garber, the boy who played Michael Banks in Mary Poppins. To start with, Garber was so distinctively red-haired, and he had BIG blue eyes... whereas Wishaw has completely black hair and SMALL green eyes. Apart from that, nothing in his face or his expression, not even his skin tone reminds of the young Michael Banks. Really. It really is annoying. Notice I am not saying anything against having cast Emily Mortimer as an adult Jane Banks, as she is completely believable as the grown-up version of Jane Banks. It's not that she looks exactly like Karen Dotrice, the young Jane Banks, but she looks reasonably similar. An actor doesn't have to look exactly like the actors from whom they inherit their roles, but at least have some basic similarities. Ben Wishaw is the perfect choice if they wanted to present an anti-lookalike of the original Michael Banks, I don't understand, honestly.
