I played oboe in junior high and high school (over 20 years ago *cough*). My mom also played oboe and went to Indiana University on a full-ride scholarship. We made reeds together in her kitchen when I was growing up. She passed away nearly 6 years ago and I inherited her oboe (an F.Loree that my grandfather purchased for her around 1970). I’m trying to relearn how to make reeds and play again because it feels like a waste for such a beautiful instrument to be neglected. I wanted to thank you for your videos! I would be lost on this journey without them.
thank you so much for this! my teacher is the one who usually make my reeds but with this pandemic thing going on I had to do it by myself and I was really scared lol this video helped a lot!
If you are on oboist or bassoonist, watch this video, if you are not, still watch this video, because reed making might be a fun and useful thing in life.
The chanter reeds of many forms of bagpipe are similar in concept to oboe reeds, and I've been trying to learn reed making for my instruments of choice for a while now. This video is very helpful, thank you.
Hey! I love the way you explain it all, it seems so easy! Do you know if we could use old sax reed to make oboe reeds ?I have so much broken reeds in my band class that I was hope I could use those broken reeds for something useful.
How about some suggestion on buying a high quality reed making kit or separate tools. I am not interested in the square style scraping knife. I like the single blade style. How about cane and string material itself is the differences in quality and sound? Which are the better quality and who sells? Thank You
Just passing by accumulating double reed info in English for tinkering with a suona that cost 1/50 of what oboes do. Suona reeds are much shorter and wider at the top to look triangular. Each reed suana end is bound by short copper wire spiral and pushes onto the mouth piece and easily taken off and pushed back on. I need to find information on the rubber like cone shape gasket that fits the suona mouthpiece to the suona. I can invent my own, but I'd rather find an easy way to make the joint.

Could have different causes so it’s hard to know for sure, but the most common would be that perhaps 1.the cane was not very dense, 2. The scrape has too much downward pressure. (To solve this sharpen you knife; I’m working on a video to show how to do this) 3.the plaque is too contorted for your cane diameter (disregard this if using a flat plaque)
Hi sir Danny Cruz.... I'm also a oboe player and I'm using loree royal... I would like to ask if do you have a video of how to maintain d oboe in perfect condition, the wood and keys....
Hmm I don’t have a video on maintenance of the wood, that’s a good idea, but I do have a video on adjustments and removing keys for cleaning the tone holes . YT doesn’t allow links in comments any more but you can search OboeFiles + oboe adjustments
Okay so I’ve been playing oboe for like three years and have been starting to make reeds. I have bought all the items needed included gouged and shaped cane. I have been trying to tie them and they come out find when I first tie them but then when I begin scraping the cane slips off the staple and the wrapping/tying comes undone. Is there any advice you could give me because it’s been really frustrating and I can’t figure out what is happening!
So It sounds like you might not be pulling tight enough while tying. Its really important to pull tight both on the spool and mandrel toward yourself while tying. Check out my video on tying for a better demo. Hope that helps! Good luck :)
I have just started to scrape pencils and I've spent about 4 hours doing it. Because my teacher can't make me reeds right now, I have a place online where I buy good quality reeds but they still need to be adjusted. How long approximately should I be working on scraping pencils and old reeds before I can adjust the reeds I'll buy online?
Reeds you buy should work well more or less right away. Maybe try different sources until you find something that works for you. As far as scrape time, I think you should just jump in and scrape some old reeds first the key is just getting used to a sharp knife. A dull knife is deadly.... good luck! I have some stuff on www.oboefiles.com/articles/ that might help, good luck!!!
Using beeswax is smart. It keeps the cane from slipping around, and it's an additional sealing technique. It's necessary for freehand tying taught to me by John Ellis.
Hello! I was wondering if you have to be a professional oboe player to make your own reeds? I've been playing oboe for 4 years but I am thinking about making my own reeds.
Audeez that’s great! You can started at any point! professionals in USA make their own reeds and the more time with it the easier it’s going to be, good luck! Let us know how it’s going
Because of wasted performance wasted in class:this daya driven student centered learning works best for making reeds with , of course, assistance from your private instructor
@@OboeFiles A scraper is a rectangular piece of hard metal of various sizes and shapes on which edge you pass a special rod called burnisher, a VERY hard metal. Thus, you create a microscopic blade called burr perpendicular on the edge. When you pass it over a surface, it cuts directly in that direction. It's used for very fine finishes on furniture, bow making, and so on. Scraping with a knife does not apply the blade in the direction of the cut. ruclips.net/video/7bkYsgNFpEg/видео.html

Imagine if violinists had to cut and fit a new bridge every couple of weeks.
Lol should be a bit on twoset

That is so wonderful! Please share it around if it proves helpful!
Great job on the video, thanks a bunch
Thanks! I hope you make some tasty reeds! Best of luck!
I was so confused when I heard my all region music being play by you haha

Thanks to everyone for your support! The finished piece is awesome!!
is making reeds without a mandrel okay? i haven’t been using one and they sound fine to me
Lots of people don't use one; it's what you get used to.
Sure, many people just go straight tube, softer tubes may deform without the mandrel keeping their shape so be careful
hey, working on reed making videos... this one is awesome... have some questions..
what are the questions
Pray tell?
My cane cracks every time I start to scrape. How do I prevent this from happening?

If I don't cut it as a player, I could always make reeds for a living 🙂

I was taught to run the thread through a block of bee wax before winding, but I don't see anybody do that anymore.
It’s just a matter of preference :)

Yes just order from my website :) YT won’t let me link but search for oboefiles

I think I agree
Not only is the oboe hard to play, but you also have to suffer through making your own reeds 😭😭😭😭
It's a love hate relationship! 😂
I wonder why oboe players don't use a real scrapper for scrapping. Meaning more finesse.
Hmmm I’m not sure what a real scrapper is ?
