If I want to avoid pooling, which is always, I helically knit using both ends of the cake. Something about the change in direction of the yarn's dye pattern really helps it not pool. Also when the yarns get twisted you can just lift the hat by the two yarns and let it spin itself free.
So glad to finally find out how toaster got his name, been watching a little while now and it's always been a question - I kinda decided you must of gone shopping for a toaster and came home with a dog, but glad to have a real answer now 😊
For the neckline of the alpenglow, you could rip out the bindoff and decrease some stitches then re-bind off. Or something that wouldn't show, on the inside near the edge you could either do a crochet row of slip stitches that pull it a little tighter. Also you could run a strand of yarn or elastic thread through the back near the top that pulls it a little tighter than the ribbing naturally sits.
LOL. Maryland is actually southern, our state is right below the Mason Dixon line. 😊😊 Also Cloverfield is an amazing shop. Your sweater is looking really great. I love the pooling on your hat, but I'm the weirdo who loves pooling and flashing.
Your description of The Brave Little Toaster cracked me up. I remember loving that movie as a kid, and then looked it up a few years ago. That’s when I realized how dark it was!! 😂
What a great episode! Your alpenglow makes me want to cast one on!! Also so true about nyc v maryland lol I’m from nyc and moved to California and it’s so weird not to be around direct/blunt personalities or even hear the accents anymore. I resonate with your move to NYC because my husband and I moved to California last year without ever visiting as well. Toaster has such a cute name and what a sweet story!
OBSESSED with your Alpenglow!!❤️ I also love hearing others’ thoughts on us NE people. so glad Marylanders changed your mind and you enjoyed your trip! (Although I can’t guarantee the same experience for you if you ever went to an Eagles game in a different jersey😂)
Your Alpenglow is lovely! I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in Maryland & found people friendly; I generally do too. Maryland was indeed part of the South, though it has elements of both North & South - including sweet tea. Drivers can be crazy but people are warm. Cloverhill is my favorite LYS & Tempting Ewe my fave indie dyer/yarn, enjoy the super softness.
Deb from North Carolina…Natalie, I personally think your hat looks darling and flattering on you on both sides. Doubled like that I expect it will be very cozy in the cold.
Did you know that Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon Line? A lot of people don’t know that, but it’s kind of a southern state… Also - bring that graciousness to your Vols. My 12 year old got spit on the last time we went to a game. Gratefully, a UK fan who lives in Knoxville. 😉
Hi, Natalie! If you have enough variegated yarn left over, maybe you could pick your colors out of the variegation to almost match the pooling? Or use just the green pieces? that way you could just redo the crown and see if you really don't like the spiral or you just don't like the spiral next to the micro stripes. It would be a much quicker fix before ripping back the whole half. Love the channel!! ❤
Sleeves - make 2. In my disorganised days I once discovered I’d knitted 3 sleeves on a languishing WIP! Heartbreaking at all the hours that had taken, but a good lesson learned!
Chiaogoo has bamboo interchangeable needles in 4 and 5 inch tips. They also just came out with a super flexible braided steel cable with spin. They’re amazing.
I've been crocheting on and off since I was 4 years and I only started really getting into it in 2015. I am almost finished with my first sweater that fits.
the knitter pride cords are great and you will notice on the green cord, there is a white line for every inch you have knitted. I have the whole collection and use them quite often until I can get my dream set of Chicagoo lol :)
I love your channel!....I really do learn alot ......u may think that you are not explaining things clearly ,but I find u are excellent and very exact.....love this hat.!
I LOVED the brave little toaster! My mom says my twin sister and I would sit in the 2 sinks we had in our kitchen as babies (one on the counter and one on the island) and squirt each other with the water sprayers because we loved Squirt
So can we entice you next year to travel to New Haven for The Game - Harvard vs Yale at the bowl? Always the Sat before Thanksgiving. For college football enthusiasts, a must see!
Late Spring my husband and I went to seacoast for part of the day. I was knitting on the beach. There was a younger couple sitting near us. I could hear them talking about me knitting. Went over, showed the two at a time socks I was working on. Asked if they liked knitted face/wash clothes. Got there address and sent them half a dozen. I had knitted them ages ago. Now they have a good home. I got a nice thank you card.
They make chiaogoo interchangeable wooden needle sets and I believe they have the same fantastic cords. I love the muselburgh hat and your sweaters are beautiful If I knit sleeves and anything I have to match taat
Andrea, on occasion, recommends you can weave in an elastic string or thread to sinch in the neck to help lay it down. So it'll keep you from that choke factor and going back to reknit it. And if the string doesn't work then you can go back and figure out the neck. Or it can be a quick fix to get you through rhinebeck. Just a suggestion, take it or leave it. It does look so good!! I can't wait to start mine. I'm not going so I don't need to jump on the project but man I'm itching to start it, you're husband is right, it's very lovely! You're colors work so well!
If you rip your hst back and want it a tad longer you could add some white or black between your 2 colors and then helical knit the variegated color. It looks great and would look great reknit also.
I’m like you in that I knit where ever I can. And I do sometimes get asked about what I’m making. Maybe, because it is odd when a man notices, or maybe because it is a man asking that I remember them more. But usually when a man asks about my knitting or crochet it is because is grandma or his mom did it when he was a child and it is a flash into his childhood. I love when that happens.
I hope you and Kent have the *best* time in Texas this weekend! Wish I was there to hang out too. your sweaters are coming along so quickly and look amazing! I really liked the ribbed portion of the Musselburgh! I might have to try that in the future.
Natalie, you are major in my book. You're one of the main people I'm looking forward to meeting at rhinebeck. I will also be at wool and Folk and plan to say hello for sure. You got me really into sock knitting this year starting with sock week and followed by taking your perfect fit sock class.
Morning Natalie! I love knitting my sleeves (and socks!) two at a time and do use magic loop for both. I do agree that magic loop should help cut down on the irritating needle noises. It takes a little organizing with a top down sweater but once I get everything in place, I do find that the sleeves knit pretty quickly TAAT. I hope you have a great festival weekend in Texas! Cheers, Kate
The Brave Little Toaster was one of my daughters favorite movies!! Kind of crazy and my parents who were elementary teachers were the ones who gave it to her at a very young age. 😮
I enjoyed the variety of this episode. Your Alpenglow is stunning. My husband and I are traveling to Maryland from Michigan for the Michigan State - Maryland football game on October 1! Glad to hear Maryland folks are friendly 😊. I appreciated hearing about the pregame activities. So there was no problem bringing knitting into the stadium? We can’t do that at MSU ☹️. While we’re there we plan to go to Frederick to visit Magpie Mercantile and The Knot House. Excited!
I’m jumping in here at the beginning of your podcast and saying that I LOVE your Musburl (sp) hat💚 You have a one of a kind there and it looks so cool on you. The bottom looks tie-dyed and the striping on top is so cool! People are going to want one 💚💚💚💚
I am just getting ready to do a Musselburgh hat. The beginning has me stumped but will look for some videos to help. Love how yours turned out, I like the slouchy so I can stuff a ponytail up in the top. So love your sweater!
Maybe someone posted this but rib is tighter based on the structure of the purls lying closer to the knits. This is why when you rib the edge of a sweater it is naturally tighter even without going down a needle sixe
Knit picks and knitters pride are sister companies as is lantern moon(or they were at one point, years ago). The cables usually work with them all. I've only found a few that didn't for whatever reason. I have one set of mindful and the cords work with my other sets. I have had to switch needles to opposite sides once for some reason...I have 2 sets of shorties and another on the way. I never seem to have enough. Have you tried the 9" circulars? I have 3. I use them like the 2 at a time with the third needle doing the knitting off the other two. I know you can use them like circulars but I was not sure how that would work since I had a larger quantity of stitches. Fear of losing them and all that. I love your Alpenglow! I have yarn for Stephen West's shawl mkal, which will be my first mystery project. I noticed you're filming in the bedroom again, did the other situation not work out or was this filmed before you moved your desk? just curious. I live in a 38' 5th wheel and I have no storage unit, just a little 8' storage shed(in reference to your storage unit in TX). Got a kick out of your comment about too much stuff. lol I've been knitting for 40+ years and still struggle with new things and getting things to fit. Now that I'm retired I knit 24/7 according to my friend. And finally, can I say I am glad you are back to more videos... I do enjoy watching them.
Wonderful Alpenglow! My neckline did the same standing up type of thing as well but I knit it to the called-for length. So I ripped it out and did a shorter rib like yours and like it a lot better! 😊
I'm knitting a raglan sweater now and I think if I could do it again I would try this method. As I'm finishing the top I'm ripping and re-knitting because it's not matching up. Can't wait to see!
Oh no I missed the meet and greet. Would you share with me the local yarn shops you use to frequent in tx? I feel like there are only like 3 in the DFW area, which I’m sure I’d wrong. I feel like a lot of them just don’t pull up on google.
I love the Musselburgh as is, but it doesn't sound like you're completely happy with it. If you're wanting to change it I think the splitting into 2 balls and doing helical could be a neat option (I'm really curious how that would knit up). Another option would be to split where the 2 join and add in a section of black that could be folded up as a brim. Plus then it would be more in their colors when you wear the solid side. Just an idea. Either would be cool. I love it like it is but obviously you want to make a hat that you're most likely to wear. Can't wait to see what you decide to do!!
Love your RUclips posts!! WOW your Alpenglow sweater. Your choice of colors make it wonderful & remarkably beautiful. I have a question about what does it mean to join your membership?
NO TWO PEOPLE ARE ALIKE SO NEITHER ATE MY WORKS OF ART ! It is perfectly ok to have variation..keeps people guessing. People are always trying to figure out what I am up to.
I’m a leftie knitter, I knit in the normal right handed way. I struggle with purl & the way I hold the needles is odd but it works for me. One of these days I’ll knit a practice piece and work the kinks out of my purl method once and for all.
The thing I have found is that even if you don’t think something is you or you don’t like it, no one who sees you knows that. Plus you can’t see it once it’s on your head so 🤷🏻♀️
I am just getting ready to do a Musselburgh hat. The beginning has me stumped but will look for some videos to help. Love how yours turned out, I like the slouchy so I can stuff a ponytail up in the top. So love your sweater!

Your hat is fine in its uniqueness esp. at your sports venue- it's a "one of a kind"!
I think the hat looks super cute on you....both sides :)
Your Alpenglow is absolutely gorgeous and suits/fits you so well. You should be super proud of yourself, it looks amazing 😍

You will love that swivel cord!!
Love that Alpen Glo sweater. It looks beautiful on you too.
The cables that go with lantern moon (nylon coated steel cords like chiagoo) for the knit picks needles
The hat is very nice and looks good on you. I like unique hats. I’d say 100% success.
I really like the pooling and spiraling of the hat!

I love the movie brave little toaster, but I've always loved creepy children's movies.

The Alpen Glo is just ❤❤❤
Hello! Your Sweater looks great. If you decide to make another one, you could get away with short sleeves and it would be adorable on you.
I love Chiagoo needles.
NO TWO PEOPLE ARE ALIKE SO NEITHER ATE MY WORKS OF ART ! It is perfectly ok to have variation..keeps people guessing. People are always trying to figure out what I am up to.
I like the spiral look. Can you give instructions on how to make the hat not slouchy.? I don like slouchy hats for myself
Hii
What left handed resources do you recommend? Are there any knitters you like who are lefties?
I’m a leftie knitter, I knit in the normal right handed way. I struggle with purl & the way I hold the needles is odd but it works for me. One of these days I’ll knit a practice piece and work the kinks out of my purl method once and for all.
The thing I have found is that even if you don’t think something is you or you don’t like it, no one who sees you knows that. Plus you can’t see it once it’s on your head so 🤷🏻♀️
I don't like it when the yarn is pooling. I dye my own yarn and try to avoid it.
What if you helically knit the whole thing for Kent and you striped both colors… maybe then the pooling wouldn’t be so evident.
why are you in the bedroom?
I am just getting ready to do a Musselburgh hat. The beginning has me stumped but will look for some videos to help. Love how yours turned out, I like the slouchy so I can stuff a ponytail up in the top. So love your sweater!
Very Pink Knits has a great tutorial that really helped me.
