Let's talk HOODS! Here's the link to my Ravelry bundle where you can find all of these patterns: www.ravelry.com/bundles/hoods-630 Thank you for watching! ❤
This takes me back to when I was a little girl in the late fifties early sixties. Then little girls and women wore Pixie hoods and little boys and men wore balaclavas . Look for old patterns. I’ve got some from the thirties , forties and fifties. I bless my mum and grandma for keeping their patterns love watching your videos ❤
Hi Tayler 😊 "balaclava" is the name of this type of hood here in Norway, it was very popular between the young girls during winter, usually the yarn used is the chunky and squichy type, with thick needles. Personally I like more a normal beanie 😊. Love so much your videos ! ❤ Hugs from Austevoll Norway 😊
So interesting! Thank you for sharing that because I have seen it referred to as a balaclava but I always thought that was more…obscuring, if you will. Good to know! And thank you so much for your kind words and support. ❤❤
I think of a balaclava as just more tight/form fitting than a hood. It hugs the head and face rather than being more slouchy. I also agree that a balaclava could provide more covering on the face, for example only showing the top half of the face or just the eyes - a ski mask if you will.
It is quite normal in Scandinavia (I'm Danish) for kids to have hoods - often the part that sits around your neck is ribbed, so it keeps the wind out. Esp. in kindergarden it isn't allowed to have ties on hats, but also, having the hat and the cowl together means that dropping/loosing etc. hats is less likely - and it has fewer gaps between garments (without the bulk of a sweater). It makes layering easier. And mind you Denmark is the warmest of the Scandinavian coutries.
Oh also - my son (17yo) has a hood, in fleece - that he bought years ago: It is *actually a cowl with a hood sown onto it - so there is basicaly a cowl underneath the hood the he can pull up overh is nose (with a drawstring), while not drawing the hood closed. I really like the way it looks.
You really give so much inspiration! I never would have thought about knitting a hood, but I see the use of it. Good for neck warming, but also putting over your head to protect from wind and cold without developing "hat head". Thanks for sharing these great pattern ideas! I can't wait to see how yours comes out.
I'd just like to chime in as someone who loves history.... When you first said snood I immediately thought of snoods that women used in history to keep their hair tidy 🤣
Last year, I Tunisian crocheted a "hooded viking cowl" from an Etsy pattern. I get so many compliments! It's more hefty than this type. I definitely recommend making something like this. It keeps you much warmer, works with most hair styles, and looks classy.
I Love Hoods and your interpretation of what you want is Exactly what I love. I am hoping you will write a pattern for yours when it's done so I don't have to try to copy it😊 thank you! BTW hoods are great for camping or any outdoor activities all year lond!! They help keep bugs away tiresome breezes and so much more. Thanks again!
Really enjoyed this video. I made the Flashback Hoodie for my daughter for Christmas and it turned out great. The neck/cowl part is done (almost) last so you can adjust the length (or probably gauge too with slightly larger kneedles to make a looser 1x1 rib). I used worsted Woolfolk Far combined with a strand of lace alpaca for extra softness and the fabric it made was divine. I am planning to make another one for myself in the fall!
Are you my fairy-"knit" mother???? This is the third time you have created a video after I've shown interest in a certain project or technique! first it was German short rows, then socks, now it's hoods! I think you know what's best for me in terms of knitting at this point 😂
I love hoods. I don't have winter coat anymore (and I live in Maine). I have very thick poncho with a separate hood that has a cowl to cover anything showing from neckline of the poncho when it's really cold. It's my favorite way to dress for the cold weather.
These last two posts are so well-timed. I was just talking with a friend about how I don't really like hats on me and she asked why don't I knit up a hood? I had truly never thought about it. It sounded great and then you pop up with this!! 😂😂😂😂 This post really helped me to consolidate what I was really wanting. Thanks so much!!
I just recently did the same search. Planning to knit a hood for travel to the Faroe islands where its can be cold, rainy, and windy. I love using scarfs as improvised hoods when traveling but I think this trip merits one specifically!
I've made the Friends of the Forrest hood and absolutely love it! I made it in a wool/alpaca/silk blend because I live in Michigan and need as much warm as I can get in the Winter. It worked almost too well because I often have to pull the hood back before I get to the bus stop 3 blocks away.
This is so useful I always end up with extra balls of yarn after a big project and now have more hats, gloves and socks than I need you've inspired my next yarn stash project 😄
Strega Nona 🤣. I need to go dig out my kids’ books! I didn’t know about these hoods - perfect gift idea for my daughter about to marry a rancher and needs all kinds of cold weather gear. Thanks!
I have just started the LENU hood with just SS instead of the ribbed neck portion. I had what I needed and want it for Spring College Softball and Football games in the late Fall. Always windy so this will be great even while wearing a baseball cap :)
I like the point on the top back in some of the patterns; slightly costume-y is fine for me. But I get that there isn’t really a “just so” pattern…yet. Looking forward to more on the subject.👍
this is so funny i was thinking of knitting another hood because I used mine a lot this year and I see this. its like you were reading my mind. the first one I knitted was the grandma core hood by kutovakika and loved it. awesome video
I went through this years ago when I tried to replicate a commercial hood/scarf combo I loved. I wore it ALL THE TIME when I lived in the Bay Area. I was unsuccessful mostly because I didn’t find a lightweight enough yarn that also allowed the hood to also stand up on its own. 🥹. I Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this less common accessory. FYI A few years ago I made the Newbury Cowl (really a hood) from Third Piece which is lovely, and I recently added some fingerless knits out of the same chunky yarn. It’s way too heavy for NV, doesn’t meet your criteria, but I do recommend it for those who want a really stellar “third piece” accessory.
I went through this exact rabbit hole last year. I still haven't knit it 😂 In my research I narrow my taste to a long cowl with minimum shaping (if any) for the hood and with a split on one side for good fitting. No actual hood visible, I'd rather had a long tube that has the option to become a hood. I don't usually like cowls because I feel like I'm wearing an orthopedic collar that makes my neck toasty but doesn't cover my chest. With one slit I'll ease the gathering in the neck and transfer some of the fabric to the chest. I also imagined a loose and flowy fabric that can be worn comfortably all on the neck (and some on the chest) or to lift it up and have a hood as well. I discarded the actual hood hanging in the back because in that area of my body I get very hot very easily, specially during my commutes in winter. So I'm going to knit a long tube with a side slit in a lightweight but cozy fabric 😅 I'm still searching for the perfect yarn. In that note, I'm knitting a scarf WITH A HOOD ATTACHED for my bf. I'm all over the hood matter! This video has arrived at the perfect time for me!
Oooh, love this... *adds to the list of things to knit* I'm going to follow your advice and explore Ravelry as well, I might even find something comfy for when I go LARPing in winter!!
Love that MIKA hood. And also caught a cheeky glimpse in the background of your Ravelry search of the DRK Everyday Cowl. Not a hood but very very nice. 😊
Just started searching ravelry aswell, found a pattern that checks your boxes! The Balahood by Emma Fassio, is maybe something you want to check out. Still looking for the perfect hood for myself, I like the drapey light ones. But also ride a bike every day and want to have it stay on my head and protect me from some light rain. Maybe I have to reconsider a drawstring option. I have knitted some hoods and balaclava’s before and they are a fun project!
I've been on a mission to find the perfect hood for a long time. Very happy to see you go on this journey too. I knitted the Ollie hood.. But I think I need something without mohair and a wider cowl. Can you share the circumstance of the cowl on the hood that you purchased?
Personally I want to knit the Ollie hood by Emilie Luis. I've got my yarn ready but not sure I'll get to wear it this year so idk if I'll cast it on any time soon.
Not sure how, but you have made me think that I could knit my first cardigan. I would like to use the LVW yarn you showed on a previous episode. Is that yarn soft or toothy? Plus, what gray was that you showed? Light or dark?
I have long curly hair and like to have a hat most of the time throughout winter. I then like to wear something on my head in the summer as I am in the sun quite a bit. My problem is hat head! I am now wondering if this might be a good solution. I like the one you purchase for its' simplicity and drape. I feel like it looks feminine and graceful and not hair crushing. I am just not sure about its' warmth as it is not close to the head. I guess that is the compromise if I do not want to crush my curls and have a flat head.
I suffer from hat-head too! With regard to your comment re “not close fitting”, my experience is that it creates a layer of warm air around the body, much like how a long, voluminous skirt traps body heat, and is warmer than tight fitting trousers. Anyway, just try it out and see what works for you. 👍🦋
1. Doesn't make me look like a crabby baby being birthed face first. I like the fit of the hood in the Susanne Müller photo and your store bought hood (I think the front is meant to folded back for a better fit).
I've been thinking of making a hood for my daughter, who just moved to New Hampshire. The Knight Hood caught my eye. Did you see that one in your search?
So when I do this, what I see is not a hood, but rather a ski mask with a small opening for the nose, eyes, and mouth. Not my idea of a hood. However this is just one perspective. I’m realizing that hoods (like the ones I’m sharing here) are referred to as balaclavas is some countries. Just not in America, as far as I know.
About twenty years ago when i didn't know better i washed a large wool hood that was meant to be felted and it felted in patches for God knows why. I still don't know what to do with it.
SOOOOO I can completely see this happening, however the one I'm wearing here doesn't do that fortunately. I feel like this will really depend on the overall weight and particularly why I want my hand-knit hood to be lightweight. Great question!
Do we think the designer of the Kenny Hood named it after a certain animated character you had just mentioned moments before? If so it shows way too much face... 👀🤣
I saw Sari Nordlund is in the process of making a balaclava/hood as well (about 40 min in here: ruclips.net/video/5QjyGiYoWDc/видео.htmlsi=vgNwPLElUF9REQDM) and that might very well be my DREAM hood! It ticks all the boxes for me!! Except she hasn’t released it yet! 😭😭😭 Maybe next winter!! (Although in Sweden today, April 2nd, it snows…)
Yes. A snood is not a hood. I mention this here in the video when I share the distinctions between a hood, a snood, and a hooded scarf. However, the snood, similar to the balaclava, has evolved in its use and design. What we may consider a large cowl is now considered a snood in many circles.
It’s interesting bc I knit the Harris hood and it wasn’t nearly as big for me as the pictures and I was on gauge. I had to rework the pattern for size and shaping for the head to get it to look how I wanted. 🧶

Hi Tayler 😊
"balaclava" is the name of this type of hood here in Norway, it was very popular between the young girls during winter, usually the yarn used is the chunky and squichy type, with thick needles. Personally I like more a normal beanie 😊. Love so much your videos ! ❤ Hugs from Austevoll Norway 😊

Add a satin lining to help avoid frizz and keep moisture in your hair.
If you do indeed design your own, I am weighing in with a name for it. "Hoodwinked" or if you stick to the "Frankenstein" theme: "In Frankie's hood"
It is quite normal in Scandinavia (I'm Danish) for kids to have hoods - often the part that sits around your neck is ribbed, so it keeps the wind out. I’m thinking that a hood is really a giant sock heel.
There is a hooded scarf pattern on ravelry "HeelHead Scarf" that is exactly that.
That was my thought too!
Hahaaaa😂 I didn’t think of it that way but so so true🤭
I’m thinking you’re 100% correct. 😊
Exactly
You design it, and I will knit it!
You really give so much inspiration! I never would have thought about knitting a hood, but I see the use of it. Your ideal hood is just what I’m looking for. Can’t wait for your own design to be ready!!

100% agree about drape. I really love how that one hood settles into a pretty, drapey cowl
The Mika hood would look perfect with your fireside mitts!
Omg it would!! ❤❤
Are you my fairy-"knit" mother???? This is the third time you have created a video after I've shown interest in a certain project or technique! first it was German short rows, then socks, now it's hoods! I think you know what's best for me in terms of knitting at this point 😂
Bippity boppity boo! 🪄🧚♂️
I put my knitted hood on to watch this so I can watch in style
Yus!!
Great episode! I just got yarn for The Simple Knit Hood. I loved the version of it you made in a later video!
I have plans for a hood that has a front and back flap instead of a cowl. That way I can wear a peacoat and have that extra chest warmth and a hood
I love hoods. I don't have winter coat anymore (and I live in Maine). I have very thick poncho with a separate hood that has a cowl to cover anything showing from neckline of the poncho when it's really cold. It's my favorite way to dress for the cold weather.

It never occurred to me to knit a hood. Thanks for the inspiration and enabling!😅
Knitting a hood while watching! Yay! Thank you for a lovely episode. Greetings from Italy ❤

I've put hoods on my to-do list. May even knit a hybrid hood-dickie. Many thanks.
Some E.T. vibes 😊
I've made the Friends of the Forrest hood and absolutely love it! I made it in a wool/alpaca/silk blend because I live in Michigan and need as much warm as I can get in the Winter. It worked almost too well because I often have to pull the hood back before I get to the bus stop 3 blocks away.
Im making the hermit hood for autumn, it's like a basket weave pattern.
Thanks!
I’ve never thought about a hood, but it’s very flattering. I would need a lightweight hood maybe in fingering weight.
I have just started the LENU hood with just SS instead of the ribbed neck portion. I had what I needed and want it for Spring College Softball and Football games in the late Fall. Always windy so this will be great even while wearing a baseball cap :)
I always love your structured approach. Great selection of hoods. Looking forward to seeing your version.
My niece wants the hood you are wearing. Will you share information ? Thanks for the ideas.

Great episode!
Thank you for all of the hood information! Some of it was snood to me. Cowl me silly, but I really enjoyed your video! 😂😂😂
I've never thought about making these but they would be great for the in between season. I need to look into this
I went through this years ago when I tried to replicate a commercial hood/scarf combo I loved. I wore it ALL THE TIME when I lived in the Bay Area. The purchased hood is very perfect
I had one when I was little!
My other favourite hoods I’ve been eyeing is from une Cecile (sp???) I want to know her woooooool choices!!
This is good inspiration for me. We are moving into Autumn/Winter now.
I love your videos! Thank you for putting together a bundle of patterns! I tried a Ravelry search on my own without success.
A snood reminds me of a tube top for your head. 😂😂😂
Omg yes!!!
In medieval times, hoods were separate garments. They often had a small shoulder capelet as well.
The pendulum is swinging back! ☺️
I went through this exact rabbit hole last year. I still haven't knit it 😂

I'd love to know where you got the one that you are wearing! I couldn't find the other video you said you mentioned it in. 🤔
A wollen spun yarn would give you a lightweight fabric even with a dk yarn.
Would this be a good beginner project? Fun vlog.
Yes! In fact I think this would be a great way to get comfortable with shaping techniques and seaming. ❤️
1. Doesn't make me look like a crabby baby being birthed face first. I like the fit of the hood in the Susanne Müller photo and your store bought hood (I think the front is meant to folded back for a better fit).

Interesting thoughts and considerations, would have fit into 10 minutes max, but sometimes it´s good to go a bit more in-depth about things.
