Never heard the “cocking the leg to free up the diaphragm” explanation before. Just like the M14 Hi Power Match “unfair advantage “ mag rules. How that spilled over into combat rifle training is anyones’ guess.
I think everyone who watches pat regularly knows EXACTLY how it spilled into combat rifle training. Starts with "i" and ends with "nstitutional inbredding".
Probably started at the Camp Perry Matches. If you have a shooting coat on and are properly slinged, you don’t need to have your magazine on the ground
If you don't get your diaphragm off the ground you are eventually going to get tired from your diaphragm having to lift your body to breathe. Tired leads to fatigue, pulse, and inconsistency. Once you support the position (mag on the ground, bipod, bags...) it's not such a big deal because you are only doing half the work of maintaining position. Fundamentals exist for a reason. Nobody is doing extra steps just because. You don't have to learn or follow fundamentals, but you'll be better if you do. Are you going to do this in combat? Probably not. But if you want to learn how to shoot a better group, which leads to better zeros, then it matters just like Pat said. Or you can rely on bags like the rest of the part timers.
Great 5 minute lesson! 2 days ago I was teaching the same to 14yr old boys in mountain terrain, 35F, falling snow. They were firing successfully on 400 yard man size silhouettes in just a few minutes of coaching with these principles (DR/P100). Rock & roll!
Notice, he didn't have to remain in the prone position during his explanation. He could have shown the position, then gotten up with the camera and moved to a bench for the rest. Secondary lessons: be comfortable staying on the ground a while, and stay fit enough to get up briskly. Thanks for the example, Pat.
I’ve seen two of Pat’s dogs now. This is definitely a man who should have at the end of his driveway one of those signs that says,”never mind the dog, beware of the owner”.

Thank you for the fulcrum finger position. Makes so much sense that a part of your finger is contacting each side of the trigger edge. Better trigger control. It helps me avoid pulling my shots. Mac the Man.
Excellent video. As a US Distinguished Rifleman, NRA Long-Range High Master Competitor, and Military Rifle Instructor assisting USAMU deliver SDM, TTT, and SAFS, I can say follow this guy’s instructions. Make your NPA Princess & The Pea sensitive to being muscularly relaxed and you will be on your way to becoming a Champion Shooter.

I’m watching this in the wheelhouse of a boat. I was so into this video, that when Gretchen walked off screen, I actually looked up out the front window to see where she went🤦🏻♂️😂
This was super helpful! I made the mistake of starting off shotgun, then pistol, and then doing speed rifle shooting within 50 yards. Of course each of these has their place but I am super out of my element doing any sort of grouping when I should have started with that off the bat. Fundamentals are insanely important, thanks for the video.
It is again basically word for word what he was teaching the 10th mountain division, he has no doubts about what he teaches and he knows it's good and knows it works so he doesn't ever change it up because he know this explanation works for shooters and he's not gonna reinvent the wheel to look cool, this works so he teaches this plain and simple, I really can admire and appreciate that

Stuff like this is why I love having military neighbors. Living by Ft Bragg affords me the opportunity to learn stuff from some of the greatest guys in the world. Thank you for your continued service by teaching and disseminating your knowledge to all. Much love 🤙🏻🤙🏻
My first shooting instructor taught the cocked leg. He said to remain in a prone shooting position for very long with straight legs leads to rapid, choppy breathing and ultimately tensing of the low back.
I love that he emphasized TRIGGER CONTROL most people don't think about it like that they just think trigger squeeze , Another awesome knowledge drop from Pat Mac Thank you sir keep it up !
You have an innate ability to teach. It is easy to comprehend what you convey due to the amazing clear way you express your thoughts. Again, thanks a lot, Pat. Your input is priceless.
Thank you for the insightful video. If I am following your video correctly, you are saying that "Position points the barrel. If the position is incorrect, the shooter has to engage muscles to refine the barrel's orientation toward the target. All the while, the barrel is seeking to return to its original orientation". Additionally, breathing and watching the sight rise and fall is also a way to demonstrate the shooter's control of the weapon. You are doing all your viewers a great service and some people from Wisconsin consider you a blessing.
Dang man the drill sergeants when I went through basic training or o.s.u.t. they absolutely reamed our ass if they caught somebody resting the magazine on the ground, they claimed it will push the magazine up to far and won't feed correctly, but I usually tried to get away with it as much as possible especially on the longer shots , and never had any issues with double feeds or any for that matter.
