  • The space saving qualities that make the iMac so portable might make you think it’s impossible to repair. Well it’s not, and today I am going to show you how to replace the display in a late 2012 iMac. The opening and disassembly of this machine is almost exactly the same as the late 2013 and even the most recent 5k retina machines, but when you are working on your machine make sure you follow the guide specific to your iMac. To find out which iMac you have, take a look underneath the foot and find your EMC number. Looking up this number will tell you your iMac’s exact model.

    You need to transfer the temperature sensing cable from the old screen over to your new screen. If you miss it, your fan in the iMac will be running all the time.

    so, how to put display back?
    and, clean the dust between glass and display?

    Hello iFixit!
    Does the replacement screen for this iMac 27" late 2012 come with one or two connecting cables?
    Do we reuse the existing Display Port Cable?
    Thank you in advance!!

  • @HialeahCompService
    @HialeahCompService 7 лет назад

    How does one disconnect the Port cable from the old screen? I don't want to break it. I don't see a disconnect bar or if it just pulls out.
    I don't want to force it and break it!!
    Thanks in advance

    Watch out using a card....stow it to far and you will damage the thin screen connectors underneath it unrepairable!! The connectors are on top of the screen only.

    You mention “not touching the solder joints. The capacitors may be charged enough to give you a dangerous shock” (4:52).
    Wouldn't holding down the power button for 30 seconds after disconnecting the power drain all residual electricity off of the system?
    I do this before opening any PC that I’m going to be working on. Is there something extra that I would have to watch out for on the iMac?
    Thanks

      The general rule of thumb when working on electrical devices is "Don't touch anything shiny" - discharging residual stored energy by toggling the power switch after unplugging the unit is a great safety practice, but even that does not guarantee that every capacitor has fully discharged.

    Can we use iMac Retina LCD Display for our old macs ? I have iMac A1419 Late 2012 i5 2.9 Ghz. If I buy some 5K Retina LCD Display should it work with my late 2012 computer ?

      Late reply, but No! It won't work. And for a multitude of reasons such as power consumption, bandwidth for video signal, physical connector, protocol used etc.

    i have a late 2012 video that just needs a glass panel replacement - can the glass panel itself come off? also would a 2009 glass panel be compatible, I'm assuming the glass panel part is a bit more universal.

    • @Brosk1s
      @Brosk1s 7 лет назад

      You're wrong, the 2009 (27") front glass panel only works for A1312 iMacs. Past Late-2012, Apple began gluing the glass in with adhesives as opposed to the A1312s which were magnetic. Furthermore the LCD (actual display) is glued to the front glass, which makes glass only repairs prohibitive.

    I’d love to send you my 2011 21.5” iMac. It’s got a blinking screen. Bad video card. I’m lousy at fixing things. The display could use replacing. A red line is present on it.

    Is it posible to upgrade my monitor to a 5k display? I’m going to be replacing my hard drive in my 2012 iMac emc no 2546 and I was wondering if I can upgrade my display now that it’s going to be open. Any thoughts? Thanks!

    What if you want to just replace the glass and not the display itself? I have a 2013 Imac with a slightly cracked screen but the pixels/display are in perfect working order.

    • @TheCrystalGlow
      @TheCrystalGlow 4 года назад

      replacing the top glass is no small order. apple in an attempt to raise screen clarity started gluing all the screens to the glass directly so that you would not have that double reflection effect

    Hey guys, can I just put any LCD screen onto my mac? Like can I put a 13/15/whatever inch display onto my 21,5 inch mac? I don't care how it looks/if it fits on the chassis. My last screen broke, and I have no interest in repairing the computer. I just want to get my stuff out of there and get it to perform basic functions. For all I care the screen hangs limb off the cables and I have to hold it up with my hand. I just need to be able to see what's going on on the computer, so I can get my work off of there The larger screens are very expensive, but I can get a small one for a hundred bucks. Hence my question.

    Rhetorical question: Why on earth does Apple use adhesives? More than $2500 for the machine and they can’t spring for a few screws?

    lol.
    Why is apple so over complicated.
    Just use screws apple instead of 3M tape.......
    This video would then be.
    Tools needed.
    one screwdriver
    remove 8 screws from the back
    Remove connector to board
    remove 4 screws holding the panel in.
    Pull screen out.
    go in reverse.
    But nope you need specialty tools if you want to do it right.

    • @gokarter28
      @gokarter28 9 лет назад

      Special tools that cost barely anything if you need to do this. You should know by now, Apple is all about form over function, and this is not any different here, they have used adhesive for years, personally they should have stuck to magnets, but I assume they didn't want people tampering inside the computer as easily.

    • @PTNLemay
      @PTNLemay 9 лет назад +1

      The bit about the excessive use of glue is true... but you'll find that most All-in-Ones and laptops are frustratingly difficult to repair, regardless of which company builds them. They've been getting so thin these passed few years that the components are very complex and over-engineered, with lots of tiny screws and glue. Tablets are even worse.

    • @B-a_s-H
      @B-a_s-H 9 лет назад +1

      Previous iMacs used magnets... so it was even more easy to open.
      Apple just wants to discourage people from opening it.
