Quite possibly the greatest 7 minutes of music from the 20th century. It’s live and it completely turns the studio version on its head. What a man, what a band. What a moment
my favorite performance of this tune: ruclips.net/video/YBvzwq1nTOo/видео.html 5/28/1959 - Atlanta, GA - Morris Brown College's Herndon Stadium i dare say he was at the peak of his powers. the band, too.
it literally brings a tear into my eyes when i realize i'd never have the chance to be in his audience in a live concert...we're left with commercial voices Ray, the spirit is lost
Hala Nsour You’re very much agreed. You’re not the one who adores and wonder bout old times. Makes you wanna go back, but you can only wonder and be sad about it.
Somehow, with this beautiful classic, the slower the tempo, the more powerful the message. When this is over,my soul feels cleansed, like the best Sunday morning service.
I saw the Reverend once. Outdoors, early evening and rain threatening. Ray surprised the band with a call for "You are my sunshine". A minute through, the skies opening up. Ray stayed and so did everyone else, until Noah told us to go!
I've been listening to Ray since I was 13 yrs old and am 75. Seen quite a few been influenced by him like Leon Russell, Joe cocker etc but none can play or sing like em . Nobody will ever have have that much soul and voice.
The 2 Raylettes in the middle are the great Marjorie Hendrix and the incredible Merry Clayton, 2 really magnificent singers. Merry is still blowing hard. RIP Sister Hendrix.
As sad as I feel saying it, I know music will never be this pure. The dominating genres of this time period (the one in the video) and before are the roots of all music. This music is amazing because its revolutionary.
there will never be a more encompassing and influential musical figure in our lifetime. unique in every way, his genius infused every aspect of his playing, and that voice.... the treasures he left us are gifts from god!
No people this music is alive as long as it touches the heart of a single one , they didn't play it for nothing , DA BEULOUZE PEOPLE HOOO YEAHH !! love you forever Ray !
When people ask me who my favorite musician of all time it's a simple answer mr Raymond Charles. No-one transcends music quite the way he does. Maybe Elvis but it's all objective. The genres and hearts and souls rays touched means his legacy will live forever. A boy straight up out the fields. Ray Charles Robinson. "don't ever let anyone turn you into a cripple."
This is even better than his studio recording of this... What a privilege it is to see and hear this... Newport, 1960. Nobody but Brother Ray could make a tempo this slow still groove. (This is now my second-favorite performance of this classic.) **enorbet2 Cool you noticed and mentioned that. There is a documentary about Ray in which I think it was Dizzy Gillespie was expressing amazement at how any drummer could stay with Ray. He said "One night Ray started with 'It.......brings..........a-a-a.........." and Dizzy started walking the 8 or 10 steps to another horn player to tell him something and he made the steps and got the first word out before Ray hit, 'te-ee-ear' " :) He said something like he wondered if Ray sent drummers to an early grave. XD There will never be another Ray. ***** I remember he was on the Carson Tonight Show one night, in the '70's, I think, and he was grooving at an incredibly slow-yet-sweaty tempo, and he actually said, on mike, between vocal lines, "Hold on, Drummer, we'll get there..." ...and the "Drummer" he said that to was the great Ed Shaughnessy.
I'm thankful that I wstarted listening to jazz when I was 10- I'll be 19 in two weeks and I'm lucky to say that voices like theese have guided me for so long
"...The mournful expressiveness of his voice opens a window into the human heart. It is the sound of soul, a cosmic howl that cuts through emotional callousness like a hot knife through butter. A sound nurtured in the blues and gospel soaked soil of the deep South and deepened by his own reservoir of pain and loneliness..." Yvonne Smith, Genius of Soul Documentary. A perfect description of the man and his soul and his unique voice. Beautiful.
The slow tempo, as you know makes it so powerful. His screams and moans, so uncharacteristic of the recorded stuff just add that extra feeling that makes you know he did it on purpose. Like everything
Woh! this is wonderful - this is the version that surfaced on the now-deleted LP "The Genius Hits The Road". I thought I'd never hear it again. Live at the Newport Jazz Festival - 1960 (?)
The version you're probably thinking of was from Ray Charles in Person recorded in 1959 in Atlanta at Herndon Stadium. The Genius Hits the Road was an ABC album a few years later and all the songs had a city or state name . Georgia on My Mind was on that album.
Omg this ending tore me slap up!!!! When it went to the background oooooooo y’all!!!!! That yeah with the chord drop ray we’re doing these progressions now this day he was before his time and still current! This was amazing
This is mind blowing . Possibly the slowest tune I've ever heard in my life, so deep and grooving . I clocked it at 12/8 1/8th note around 64😮! Also one of my favorite tunes of all time . God bless Ray Charles
Amo este tema, y no es que esté triste, para nada, es que la melancolía siempre está en el aire, es Ray al piano, que más se puede decir.

He is without a doubt my greatest idol in music ever!!!! He can turn a note like the wind blows to you into perfection an not a song of him is with lame words. RIP RAY!!!!
Of all the recordings of this song this is the best. The dead tempo and his vibrant voice...also, the harmonization of the copper instruments is chillingly beautifull. I always come back to this recording, thanks for uploading!..:)
ray Charles is such a musical genius that even racist people of white decent weren't afraid too admit that they loved ray Charles or go see him live even though they were racist so they totally contradicted themselves they were never racist they couldn't be too embrace this man they were brain washed so sad too know that racism ever exsisted or that it even still does too this day especially back south its a miserable quality too have or endure we should all just appreciate life and love one another and come together as a whole universe the way god meant us too instead of hate one another for no apparent reason.. its a shame this world is self destructing itself do too our ignorant plague do too freedom of the human race..
Amazing!!! Thanks for posting. I grew up listening to Joe Cocker’s version, much like this one, on his Mad Dogs and Englishmen album. Now I know the true source of inspiration. Slow and bluesy. So fine! ❤
I saw Ray Charles at the Coconut Grove in L.A. Opening night he had The Ray Charles Singer. The next night he had The Rayletts and he got down. He had Billy Preston on organ. Later years I caught him in Redondo Beach an a club called The Strang. Great Show. Ray Charles sounds I person as the same on his record and that’s rare.
I'm an old man. I heard Ray live in 1964 and 1982. Both times he touched my heart and took me to church. Soul.
My first experience with Ray was in 1958. Musically to this date he remains the best we ever had.
I was born in 2001 and he’s one of my favorite artist. He’ll be taking people to church for the rest of time.
you have no idea how jealous i am..
Amen!!!
Ray Charles is still touching hearts like mine .Old or young. We feel his songs deeply ❤
Quite possibly the greatest 7 minutes of music from the 20th century. It’s live and it completely turns the studio version on its head. What a man, what a band. What a moment
The best version is the live one from Ray Charles in Person.

Thank god they had camera's in 1960.
Every concert of Ray's is like a revival meeting. He has revived my soul more times than I can count.
Facts straight took it 2 church
Bought the Ray Charles - In Person album in 1959 when I was 14, now 77. This cut is still the Standard.
The greatest singer of all times.
Hard man to please, though!
@@richardmartinez7355 he demanded perfection, as that is what he produced.
That "Why Can't You" is insanely painful
I love Ray's "death tempo."
it's so goddamn good. my favorite arrangement that he performed.
I don't know if I could keep it
The original Death Ray ;)
No auto tune, only the perfect tune!!!!
Beautifully said❤❤
Music is so popcorn now. It's rare 2 find something that sticks 2 your ribs. Most these artist will be forgotten by next month
Nobody can sing the Blues slower than the Genius. He wipes you out emotionally.
it literally brings a tear into my eyes when i realize i'd never have the chance to be in his audience in a live concert...we're left with commercial voices Ray, the spirit is lost
I was indeed fortunate to see Ray live over 20 times in my life from 1963 to 2001. A true genius who is missed by millions.
Hala Nsour You’re very much agreed. You’re not the one who adores and wonder bout old times. Makes you wanna go back, but you can only wonder and be sad about it.
@@viemahadewi Or be happy about the memories. I prefer that.
All that matters is that his legend lives on brotha
I saw him twice--shook his hand once. Still haven't washed it.
His level of artistry and musicality allows him to even scream on key. There will never be another singer like this.
"Why Can't You"
Soul drenched blues fittingly at full dirge tempo. Blues don’t get much deeper than this…Hats off to the Genius of Ray the Man.
Somehow, with this beautiful classic, the slower the tempo, the more powerful the message. When this is over,my soul feels cleansed, like the best Sunday morning service.

Rest in heaven grandad. My pillar, my rock. Happy heavenly birthday.
What I love the most about Ray is that every time he would play a song he would arrange it completely definitely 😎🎶🎼🎨
And differently too!
I saw him in concert 1963 ......greatest concert ever
And I saw Steely Dan.
So you know I'm saying something.

Merry Clayton. No! She wasn't a Raelette until the middle sixties.
Hendrix was the equal of anyone up to and including Aretha. RIP.
@terrulian a beast with the vocals

Rey was the blues, soul and rock and roll
The Genius
This is my favorite version of this beautiful song. He was a unique singer beyond his time.
He takes his time to make you hurt =P.
What a LEGEND!
"Whoa, it's all right!" Ray, you pullin' every last tear out of me. Such slow, painful, agonizing...hurt
" It brings a tear to my eye,"... every time.

The dynamics being exhibited in this live arrangement of "Drown In My Own Tears" is off the charts!
check out the rendition recorded for the ray charles live in person record, if you're not already familiar.
it's filthy good.
Wow ..priceless version. Few can do it that slow and sweet..Love Ray and his people.
