  • NEW YORK, October 9, 2018 - Adul Sam-on, one of the 12 Thai boys rescued from the Tham Luang caves this summer; Ekkapol Chantawong, the boys’ soccer coach; and Narongsak Osatanakorn, who led the rescue operation as governor of Chiang Rai, join Asia Society Vice President Tom Nagorski for a conversation about their experience. The dialogue took place on the eve of Asia Society's 2018 Asia Game Changer Awards, where the rescuers at the Tham Luang Caves were honored. (34 min., 50 sec.)

I was glued to the TV while this rescue unfolded. Afterwards I was so impressed I felt compelled to write to the Governor on this stage. I sent my congratulations to the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra Australia, asking for the Ambassador to pass it on. About a month later I received a nice thank you card with the flags of all the countries who sent divers, with a faint picture of the cave in the background.
I just felt the Governor did an epic job keeping us informed and all the Thai volunteers were brilliant working as a team.
Everyone pitching in and of course the bravery and courage of boys themselves and their coach.

on of the most uplifting stories of 2018, I have been rivited to the tv watching all the channels that were at the moment broadcastin this story., So many hero The coach the boys the Thai navy seals the suburb cave divers the thouseands of Thai men and women who worked hard feeding and sheltering the rescue teams, The man who died is not just a hero for Thai but for the world. What a magnificent achievement was done getting them out, But do not forget how much the boys and coach are heros too doing what ever they had to do to keep each other going, The boys will never forget this the rest of the world will move on now to the next big stiory but in my heart I will always remember despite how polutucally the country is divided the People of thailand from the north south east west were all part ot this a Thailand has a great achievement of which to be proud.

I think mr. osatanakorn has done a sensational job as crisis manager, motivator and leader in this crisis. I don't even want to imagine the difficulties he had to shoulder in coordinating with the government, but also with the parents, the many helpers and the media. You also have to remember that this massive responsibility hit him like a tsunami and he didn't break under it. on the contrary, he rose above himself and led the project to success. I would love to read an analysis of his leadership skills.

You might know already the governor was about to be transposed to another province. But you know the cause of the transfer ? He clashed with a provincial mafia to protect Chiang Rai's interest. The mafia's wife stepped in after her husband with more powerful backup as a corrupted politician, succeeded in the elimination of this governor before the cave event.

Vern Unsworth to the Thais - you'll need the world's best cave divers for this - get Stanton and Volanthan with Harper here asap. Those fellas said to the Americans - bring Harris, Challen, Mallinson, Jewell, Warny, Roe, Bratchley and some other top European divers. Thousands played their part in the rescue, but the tip of the spear was a very rare and elite group indeed.

Why this goverment did not let that boy n coach tell how they survive in the cave,in the first question,is a meditation fr the coach n what.

Its been spoken about in lots of other interviews, where the governor is not there, it was ridiculous that he wouldnt let them speak in this. They just had an unpleasant environment of course, a small space, no food, their own excement, read Dr Harris' book, its all in there

@@yingka626 it was a very controlled interview, he may have supported them a bit but mostly he didnt want them to talk, the Thai people lied about the kids being anaethatised initially until they knew they couuldnt hide it anymore.
