I spent a weekend there in 2015 and really loved the city. English is my only language, and I had a hard time remembering how to pronounce the name, as in English it sounds very different than in Polish.
Great video! One thing that you're missing is why these dwarfs became so popular as the city mascot. Wrocław, as a city that used to be thoroughly German, needed something akin to the new formation myth, that would be Wrocław's own thing, as opposed to relying on Breslau's history. Dwarfs are a way to take things into our own hands, to forge an identity that's uniquely ours, without offending or disrespecting the rich history of the city. I know it's a complicated topic, but Wrocław's history is very complicated. After all it's one of the biggest cities to entirely change population and population's nationality, all in a span of just a couple short years. Cheers from Wrocław!
also why...? but just for people in hat made of aluminum foil, Poles are like dwarves from a warhammer and The Lord of the Ring, so Wrocław, in tribute to all the dwarves losing their homes, build they monuments ( but it is just a theory, probably false),
I love this. Whimsy beauty and individuation are acts of bravery in the face of soul and identity crushing authoritarianism. None of it seems absurd, even as a protest, just whimsical, a natural counterpoint to an overgrown state. The humble flower that cracks the all encompassing concrete that entombs the earth.
This is a part where it should be pointed out that the number of dwarfs depends on method of counting. Do Jerzy Koszałka's Off-Dwarfs count? Do dwarfs outside of Wrocław, but still made by Wrocław sculptors count? And if not, do they stop counting once they leave the border? How many dwarfs are there in dwarf bus next to Wroclavia? And then there's a case of missing or season dwarfs. So don't be fooled by the title, the amount of Wrocław dwarfs is approaching 1200, if it hasn't crossed it yet.
