    G'day from the land of Oz, hey thanks mate to you and your lovely patient Wife for taking the time out of you busy lives to save us all thousands of dollars buy doing it ourselves. My buddy Andrew is an Automatic specialist & he takes 30mins to rip one apart & 45mins to re-assemble, the kit is $495, oil is $50, labor to remove $150, labor to build $250, labor to install $250, so he said "I don't HOW these transmission shops are hitting people with $4000 bills?" Thankyou again mate! :)

    Ok I found the right puller. For anyone wondering it's a slide hammer attached to a timing pulley/cover puller.
    I want to thank you. I followed your video and my girlfriends car is back on the road running good. $125 in parts is a lot less than $2000.

      carlo marchione,,,, I wish I would've read your post before today. I went to O'Reilly and Autozone, and neither place knew what puller I needed, which I don't understand that. So, thank you so much for posting what puller it is. Thank you soooooo much.

    • @cmarchione1
      @cmarchione1 7 лет назад +1

      No problem it took me a little bit to figure it out. I will say this. The puller will barely be long enough to fit. I had to use two large washers in order to make it work. I was under the impression that it would take a lot of force to get the pump out. I was wrong. One moderate pop with a 5lb slide hammer and the pump all but fell in my lap. Its now been a few months since the repair and the car is still running strong.

    I've got the same problem right now. Apparently you get the same two codes for a shift solenoid failure, which caused me to spend my day removing the valve body to replace it. New solenoid costs about $190, good thing I went reman on Ebay for $40, because it didn't correct the problem. Band replacement coming soon. This video will prove to be extremely helpful, thank you very much!

    Thanks for posting this "in vehicle" method - you are the DIY hero. I would not have attempted is someone else had not blazed the trail. Took about 7 hours - and that's because of taking extra-time to be super careful. Advice for others: 1 - thoroughly clean (pressure wash) front left wheel well and the transmission left side. Then high pressure air blow the area to minimize grit and contaminants. 2 - when you get all wheels of the ground, do it so the car is level. This helps when you support the engine as you lower it. I used a floor jack but probably better if support it from above. 3 - replace the pump gasket, the o-ring, and the metal band all at same time. Also: hey Ford Motor Co - you guys suck... that you put a cheap part (the metal band) in this thing, costs $11, and it's the weak link that has cost thousands of consumers $1000s each to have fixed? My Tacoma has 250k mi - just bought another 2018 Toyota - never Fix Or Repair Daily (FORD) again. good gracious.

    1 recommendation: coat the pump rings with some transmission assembly grease before you put it back in. It went together real smooth for you, but they can hang & its easy to rip them up & maybe not even notice it.

    Thank you for the video, it was really helpful. I used a slide hammer to pull the cover, it was very stuck. Be sure to put a fresh o-ring on the cover and scrape the cover and the housing to make sure it slides in smoothly. I wrapped the transmission guts with plastic sack to keep debris out of it while cleaning up the housing.

    Had similar symptoms in my 08' Merc Mariner (same as the Tribute and Escape). Auto parts store diagnostics showed no codes whatsoever. Trans crapped out on the way home. Local transmission shop wanted $4k to do a rebuilt swap. Independent mechanic is quoting $1500-$2000 to repair. Rolling the dice (only 130k miles on the car).

    Can't tell you how many posts I found on the 2/4 band going out on Ford Escapes from anywhere 40k to mine ( 84 k ) As a reflection, I've never had a trans go bad on me and I've kept them for almost 200k w/out issues. Unfortunately I saw this too late for 3k trans replacement. Ford should have recalled this trans or at LEAST offered some compensation for failures under 100k.. Someone said well change the fluid every 30k. Nothing against fluid changes but I fail to see how that would have saved a METAL band from failing..

    You do need to soak that band for 30 minutes to make sure the fluid is soaked into that material. But since you bought that at an Auto Auction and you are just going to sell it, you don't care about it lasting.

    • @dealerauctionnightmare4689
      @dealerauctionnightmare4689 3 года назад

      I didn't soak anything when I did a rebuild on mine. Made sure it had at least 6 quarts before doing any kind of gear engagement and let it run (idle) for about 30 minutes before shifting out of park.

    Took me a few hours (get a heavy slide hammer... you’ll need it) but got it done and back on the road in a weekend. Shop quoted me $3200, cost me less than $50

      Robert Meagher going to have to do this myself this weekend. A bit freaked out by some of the "put back together and won't shift at all" stories. Any good pointers?

    • @RDMeags
      @RDMeags 6 лет назад

      Adrian Burns I had a minor issue where I didn’t get the shift cable set correctly, but it was a 5 minute fix. I replaced the fluid I removed and had no issues, but if you gather the fluid in a clean container you can reuse it. I’m sure most who have that issue never account for the very thick fluid removed and being thinned out with new fluid.

    • @RDMeags
      @RDMeags 6 лет назад +1

      Adrian Burns also, I dented my exhaust slightly from lowering the engine/tranny... so keep an eye on that. It doesn’t show it in the video, but I pulled the battery/battery box out, disconnected 3 motor mounts (rear one was done thru passenger wheel well). Disconnected shift cable and hardline transmission line (to radiator). I also cracked all the sensors lose prior to lowering just in case the angle wasn’t good after. Parts Breaker is your friend. And don’t over torque that tranny pump, it’s aluminum.

    • @adrianburns3677
      @adrianburns3677 6 лет назад

      Robert Meagher thanks Robert, I've never lowered an engine. Is it just a matter of using some Kind of equipment to hold the engine, then taking out mounts and then use that cradle to lower?

    • @RDMeags
      @RDMeags 6 лет назад

      Adrian Burns I had a jack under the engine and another under the transmission, had a neighbor help when lowering to make sure we didn’t go to fast.

    you've got guts for real,most mechanics wouldn't risk what you did,the 2-4 band has to hold or there will be no upshifts from there,no third or ,definitely 4th,which is what the 2-4 band does,it locks thru the bad servo twice,i'm amazed that you can access that many hard parts thru the case like that, i am watching this as i saw one of these cars for sale with the trans unit out,i buy a lot of them broken and repair them, i noticed in you video you are right next to a power station,if i were you i'd get a EMF meter and check out how much energy is going through your body,just a thought ,have a great day,you are a daring man,welcome to the club

    Nice and helpful video for this repair, and a cheap fix, yet time consuming and need tools and a lift.
    But the concern is, what was the underlying reason the 2 4 band broke.
    I was told by a transmission mechanic that you need to rebuild the whole transmission. That could cost up to $3,700.
    That the underlying problem is still there, after the repair, and same thing will happen again, after 2 weeks, 2 months, or if lucky, 2 years.
    Any thoughts.

      I had to heat it with a torch and beat it with a rubber mallet, and then used the slide hammer until my arm was ready to fall off. Good news is it came off, and the repair inside was easy, just like he shows. It doesnt have to be in neutral. Just keep beating on it. I did have to change a bushing where pump goes into trans.

      Thank you for updating. I'm going to use a MAP torch to heat up the edges once I get the transmission lowered. As for the slide hammer, you used it with a puller, correct? Would you happen to know if it's one that I could rent from Autozone or Oreilly?

    • @shaverbro

      Yin Arzew any decent sized slide hammer should work, it will need a yoke wide enough to bolt to the 2 holes on the cover. One of the holes had a bracket holding a line.
      I used a cheap harbor freight slide hammer

    Hey Keller's auto, what did you torque the pump housing to the transmission bolts to, Mitchell says 10ft,lb, it can't be that tight, we've broke two pump shafts now cuz the pump just locks up. Thanks if you get time to replay.

      I bet if you pull the pump housing off again, the shaft will be all twisted, when we pulled it back off the first time, we measured the shaft and was close to the 14 1/16" i kapt putting that size back in thinking i had torque it to much, but i don't think thats it (all the CD4E trans at pick and pull had 80 to 90in lbs on the pump housing) I bought another that was 14 1/8" just haven't had the time to play with it again.

      Hubert Keller my 07 escape is slipping from 2nd to 3rd and I now have a leak right where it appears the band goes. so I'm hoping that that is my problem and it can be fixed without having to buy transmission. the code I first received was po741 with engine light on I parked the escape for about a month and when I decided to test drive it after it threw the code, I had to jump it off cuz the battery died after sitting for so long....however, the engine light stayed off and I'm able to again....with the slip and leak. anyway, props to you sir for such a great video. I hope it solves my problem

      I don't know if this will help, but my wife's same 2001 Escape, which had the 2-4 band transmission band repaired 2 years ago, recently, just 4 months ago, would not engage in reverse or any gear at all, stayed in neutral. Seems, the shifter bushing, disconnected under the steering column, because it wore out, after almost 20 plus years. Link: -->

      Old news I know, too late, but your repair might have gone right but the bushing broke in the process.
