    I bought 2 each of 3 varieties in 1999. I brought a dozen or so with me when I moved in 2009. I don't know how many plants are out there - I mostly just let them get on with planting their runners, only removing any which look a bit past it. They are a staple part of my daily breakfast most of the summer. I regularly make a wonderful strawberry & kiwifruit with black pepper sorbet from any that I can't eat fresh. Last year I was too busy to make this, so I just froze them. They do lose texture, but all winter I have had a handful in my breakfast, they don't lose flavour or scent. Nice to have winter strawberries with no transport costs!

      @Rebecca Kearney Hello, to be honest I've never tried making nettle fertilizer so I don't know much about it. I always use tomato fertilizer following the directions on the bottle, and I always have good results. Good luck :)

    • @tonystephengrayson
      @tonystephengrayson 2 года назад

      @Rebecca Kearney I'm no expert myself, but I would agree that a nettle based fertilizer would contain more N than P and K. N(nitrogen) may be good for early growth or waking up overwintered strawberry plants, but the plant mainly needs K(potassium) for fruiting

      @brandon3872 Год назад +1

      @@youngmeesha582 They need plenty of sunlight and plant food. You may need to cover them with nets to stop birds eating them but it's never been an issue for me. I'd reccomend putting straw or hay around the plants both as mulch and to prevent the strawberries touching the soil as it can make them rot (this is why they're called strawberries!) Good luck :)

    About 10 years ago i bought a hanging pot with wild forrest strawberries (the small, very sweet, aromatic ones) for my terrace. at one point i thought the plant died off and just throwed the "dead plant" into a corner of the garden on a pile of soil. 10 years later: my garden is full with wild strawberries! Somehow it spread and now they grow everywhere between my roses and bushes. Its amazing... did the same with raspberries i bought: plants with early and late raspberry sorts mixed on a wall with afternoon sun.. so in good years i have from early summer till late summer/early autumn fresh raspberrys i can just pluck them, wash them and eat.

It's interesting that the topic I was searching for (whether or not to remove blossoms in the first year) has varying advice...some growers say 'yes', some say (as you do) 'no'. You probably see these huge strawberries in grocery stores, so if you can't find plants, grow them from seeds. Of course, the ones in stores aren't as good as home grown. 😊

    Interesting point about the 50cm spacing. I feel like my ones may be too close, with humidity possibly causing the stunting of the growth of some small berries, which seem to then rot. When I planted them last year it was too late for berries, but I did get lots of runners, though it appears I didn't spread those out enough. It looked all fine until the rapid foliage growth this spring. We'll see how the ripening process goes in the next few weeks.

    Thank you for this tutorial on how to grow them properly. :D
    So, long story short, I have suffered with bad migraine headaches for years, and fruit has never been a part of my diet.. Well, I found of video of a woman explaining how fruit can relive and even prevent a migraine.. I started eating 4 to 5 strawberries every morning and I haven't had any migraines in over a month, which is a big change. The strawberry fruit alone was / is practically a miracle cure for my migraines. So, I'm currently growing strawberries in my garden, as well as other fruit.. :D

    I love strawberries because I usually buy a hanging pot that have about 5 plants from my gardening store and after two pots and one year later I have now about 25 plants after dividing. I do employ strawberry painted rocks to fend off birds.

    We grew Gariguette strawberries in a raised bed in North Yorkshire for many years with great success, the tastiest strawberries I ever enjoyed, the fruits were netted while ripening so little chance for birds to feast. Unfortunately a couple of years ago a colony of mice found their way under a fence from next door and into the raised beds, they ate every little fruit regardless of whether they were ripe or not. It was impossible to block their way in so I invested in a couple of decent sized strawberry towers in hope we could do better from containers. We gave the new system a couple of years before giving up after last summer. I found that the plants at the top of our (not inexpensive) towers did well but those lower down just couldn’t get enough sun to thrive. With very limited space we made a decision to stop our strawberry growing for a while. I’m now tempted by the pocket type things that can be hung against a fence or wall. We have a couple with decorative plants that have done well so perhaps this will be our next move. The only plants to survive our cull are a small number of “musk” strawberries (fragaria moschata), yet to fruit despite 2 years of nurturing. Not sure they will grow this year because pigeons have pulled them out of their pots by the roots.... such is gardening life!

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  3 года назад

      That sounds like a cruel blow! I find strawberry towers can be hit and miss too - mainly because the lower strawberries struggle to get enough water and light. Those pockets could work, particularly on a sunny fence. But again, you'll need to water regularly.

    Two questions:
    1. If I save the runners, can I use those to replace the strawberry plants after three years?
    2. If grown in pots, how do you ensure they survive the winter?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  Год назад

      You can indeed propagate from the runners - as you've seen in the other video on this. Strawberries are winter hardy in most areas - but if it gets frigidly cold for weeks on end where you garden, perhaps move them somewhere sheltered (if in pots) or cover the area with straw or similar to insulate the crowns of the plants till spring.

    I must be really good at raising strawberries. I have the everbearing variety. Following all the required methods of growing them, they produced a lot of strawberries and just would not stop producing. Then winter was coming. For weeks I waited for them to go dormant. However, they never went dormant. As winter was quickly approaching here in Canada, I had to get them covered up before it got really cold here. I ended up covering them while they were still vibrant. A week or so ago, I went to check on them as the really cold weather is over now. To my surprise, my strawberries were popping up through the cover. I guess I will be having an abundant supply of strawberries this year.
