Breeding Otocinclus Catfish | Oto Cats Lifespan From Egg to Fry to Juvenile | Dwarf Suckerfish Ottos

- I spent 3 months recording footage of my otocinclus catfish growing up.
Back in March of this year I had a spare 20 gallon tank (my hamster passed away after 2+ years, that was his home). There was no way for me to give the 20 gallon tank away to anyone due to COVID. So I ended up starting a 20 gallon planted tank aquarium, hired an algae eating crew which included two otocinclus catfish. These two oto catfish turned out to be a perfect pair of male and female that ended up breeding. I understand it is tough to breed otocinclus catfish, and I’m not going to sit here and pretend to teach you how to breed oto cats (because it happened for me by sheer luck), but I will show you these dwarf suckerfish, oto cats going from eggs, to fry, to juvenile, to young adulthood.
BONUS: the tank that they bred in was coincidentally situated in my bedroom. 😂

So cute, espc mom & dad.. Still together till the end 🤭
Allyza Miesa lol omg, you got the metaphor!!!! FYI, the hamster I lost looks like the one you have on your channel. 😢
@@TankTastic owh, they are so cute aren't they? Wow.. 2+ years? The last i tried was last just few months, they passed away suddenly 😢 btw, congrats on the oto cat babies 😋 they grew up really fast 😮
just saw two of my otos doing their little breeding dance the other day. saw what I believe was two eggs, and now today I have for sure 1 fresh new baby oto!! I'm wishing the little guy all the best
I’m really impressed you got your hamster to love for over two years in a 20 gallon, mine never develop their gills.
Totallylove this!!one of the best I've seen on RUclips 👍
Wow thank you! Means a lot for a small time youtuber like me. 😁😁😁
Heart warming Otto family story. ❤️ Great video.
Thank you!
You did a fantastic work in taking fotos of the tiny baby Otos, thanks for sharing. Never seen this in detail before.
Keep hanging on to your addiction!
This is amazing man! congrats
elGuero GT thank you! Life is amazing 😉😃
That's awesome! I used to have a group of 10 and this vid makes me want to get my hands on a couple of them!
They are def one of my favorites, I keep them in every tank I own!
Congrats!
Grandparenting is fun, but the mom and dad was kind of like dead beat parents. Lolllll
well done. I love it
Thank you! 😁
I'm surprised your hamster survived under water for 2 years :O
😂😂😂 yea, he’s built different
This is so great. I just found a bunch of otocinclus fry in my tank too! I have no idea how many there are in there. I guess I'll see what happens!
Probably a lot more than you can see! Congrats!
Very cool. Have them in all my tanks That never happened to me. 🤷♂️ 👊🏻
Ahahaha, this only happened to one of my tanks that’s coincidentally situated in my bedroom lollllllll
How’s it going brother 👍 welcome to the fishtuber family! I hit those buttons for you !
Vinny’s Aquatics thank you!
TankTastic did they just remove subscriber from you too?
Not sure?
Soooo cute
Thank you!
I've been thinking about having Otis in a tank as I have them in betta sorority tank and love them!
Oh oto cats are an ABSOLUTE must in all of my tanks.
Nice broo...👍
🙏🙏🙏 thank you!
awwww mommy and daddyyyyy
I know so cute, they still together till this day 😄
Same here
🥰😍😍😍
Epiccccccccccc
Frensfrens Frens 👍👏🙏
Nice montage! I had a bunch of unidentified fry and suspect it is them since my 10g only houses Sparkling Gourami and Otos. Did you give any foods to enrich them or just let them be?
I let them be, I have terrible experience raising fry. Not my forte lol
What other fish do you have in the tank?
Great video, Thanks! Sadly, my Ottos are dying. :'(
(Ammonia is less than 0.25 PPM, Ph is 8) I don't know what's the problem. My aquarium is 1 month old and it should be cycled already. None of my shrimps & snails are dying.
Damn, ottos may get sensitive. But they should be able to survive that. How red were their gills?
Did they continue to breed? Did you try Repashy foods, In gel or drop powder.
They have not, but if they do I will try those foods!
Have you ever had oto catfish jump out of the tank? Mine got spooked last night with some light and one jumped out, luckily I caught it put it back in the tank immediately.
Yea, I found one dried up one day. Trials of having no lid.
@@TankTastic I found them to be a little bit sensitive compared to most tropical fish. They get spooked out quickly and sometimes stay spooked out for some period of time. All my water chemistry seems to be fine.
how ia your set up in your aquarium...ph, temp, waterhardness, plants ect.
For the otto fry tank. I never checked, I’m in NYC so the water is a blessing over here. But PH I know was 6.5 ish to 6.8.
What did you feed them on the first week?
Nothing, lol I was a bad parent
Will my entire snails eat the baby ottos if they are still on the side of the tank?
Nope, snails dont have an appetite for babies
@@TankTastic awesome! So is there anything I should do? About two months ago I saw three baby ottos that were well past this stage but still very small. They were moving and sucking on their own, but I haven't seen them since. I am hoping it is because they are so tiny, shoot I loose track of the four adults sometimes because I do have a heavy bed of monte carlo in my tank. Do you think they are still alive? Do I need to do anything to ensure this guy's success? Are there more that I can't see? I have so many questions lol. And so exciting! I too took up tanks during quarantine and now I have thousands of little blue shrimp that I loveeee!
Still alive? How are they going?
Still alive and kicking!
I've read breeding them are like Cory(which I breed) so I wanna try. If you're not having high success rate I'm wondering if they eat eggs/fry like Cory. Cory eat them like tic tacs 🤦🏻♀️
I had amano shrimps in the same tank, and I didnt know what to really do to have a high success rate. Next time I do.
my otos just spawned last night, what did u feed the fries?
Nice, congratulations! I fed then blanched zuchini, I put water lettuce so diatoms can develop pn the roots so they can graze as well, algae in the tank, then moved them to wafers.
@@TankTastic appreciate the tips, diatoms dont appear in my tanks anymore for some reason, i have duckweeds with long roots but i dont see any on there. will try the zucchini tho
@@TankTastic really anxious coz ive been hearing about how rare oto spawns are in captive, total of around 37 eggs at day 3 of putting em in the tank!!
But def try the water lettuce, because the roots are huge and they trap small particles that can be used as food for the fry.
@@TankTastic will try to get some, thanks a lot bud
Can i use 30/40 cm tank for breed this fish ?
I had them in a 20 gallon not sure what that measures
@@TankTastic like 6.6 galon
Thats a nano, I think two ottos would be ok in there. But once they breed, you might want to keep an eye on the tank.
@@TankTastic thank you verymuch
Enthusiastic beaver 69
( ✧Д✧) can you explain about the water parameters bcs is very rare oto can breed in the tank?? Btw Ur channel is so good pls keep update regularly
Edward Wijaya thank you bro! The only thing I was able to test is the PH and that stood at a steady 7.0 in that particular tank. The time they bred the weather was getting warmer so it was around 78-80 degrees F. The tank was fully planted with fast growing easy plants. The tank was a 20G with a 2213 Eheim canister filter. I’m also located in NYC, so our local waters I believe absolutely helped as well. Sorry, not sure if this helps as all.
Thx 4 the explanation I hope I can breed my ottos too 😄😄😄
I hope so too, if I can do it, a lot of people can. Lol
hey what did u feed them
Don't tap on your fishtank....
