Have loved this guy since the 70's... Hes mainly to blame for my interest in Australia and here I am all these years later living in Tasmania watching him on Utube..
Possible, logically the lines were far too close to Star Trek which he did too but also far too many things similar to the two and the fate was the same. We have Star Trek, Space 1999, Six Million Dollar Man all gone but what has happened has happened. We have anything that was done yesterday a lot better than most things today logically.....
Season 1 was excellent thought provoking (and sometimes kinda scary!) stories which often had a 'dark' feel to them which was very uncommon for the time. They really had the whole feel nailed, and i wished that had continued on. Though I loved Maya as a new regular on season 2, the overall feel was gone. Wish they had just kept the original cast, writers, Sylvia Anderson and just added Catherine Schell as a new regular - she would have been a fantastic sidekick to Victor. Nick is right - Freiberger was an idiot who ruined the show.
When, in the second half of the 1970s, the Space 1999 science fiction show mas made, and the characters used a kind of monitor phone and talked and saw each other through video (like Skype today), that seemed only science fiction. Now it's reality.
the only thing that fred freiberger contributed to Year 2 was a jazzed up interior in Main Mission and jazzed up looking uniforms for the cast. He should have stuck to set design because all the silly monsters in Year Two were really silly
Not just Nick, but all the actors told tha the first seres was much better than the second. Even all fans of Space 1999 think the first was the besgt. In all these years I did not find a fan, I just say one, who ever said the second serie is better, and you?
Agreed totally with Ron Stewart.. Fred was hired to produce a show. For Sir Lew to approve financing it, the show was directed by New York offices to be dumbed down, and made more american. More like Trek. Well, unfortunately that's what they got. The original flavor was gone, Fred was a competent producer from many shows. I wouldn't say he 'ruined Trek'.. C'mon. I've listened to many interviews (here on RUclips) where a couple of Trek actors said Fred had NOTHING to do with the dismal 3rd yr of Trek. Most of the original creative staff had left, the budget was cut, Gene had abandoned ship.. What would you expect...?? I prefer Sylvia's first year much more, but Fred was given his direction from ITC and made the show more to their liking. He didn't ruin anything. AND, if you consult notes, the ratings for Year 2 were better than Year 1. The ONLY reason Sir Lew didn't opt for a 3rd year was he was more interested in investing in films, not television shows any longer.
I admire Nick Tates work and career but his closing comments on Freddy Frieberger were disrespectful i think he was catering to the fans here. Certainly actors want to have credibility portraying a role on screen, every actor does. But he could of been more diplomatic i mean its thirty plus years later whats done, good or ill. is done Freddy had a job to do and he did it with the time and budget restrictions he had it will be a on-going debate but Mr. Tate could of took the high road here.
Nick, Prentis, Zienia was awesome, Nick was always my fave tho. Thanks Nick.
i remember Nick Tate's shortlived spin off show from Space 1999 about the Lightship Altares
Nick Tate glad to see he still loved the series and had fun doing it.
This confirms my feeling that all my favourite bits about Season 1 were driven by Sylvia Anderson. Not that I didn't enjoy season 2 to a degree
I LOVE NICK SO MUCH.
that show was a part of my formative growing up years in Reseda and Santa Barbara Ca.

Fred Hamburger killed a lot of shows

Nick Tate is love. It seems he isn't the only one to feel that FF ruined the show.
