I used to watch Space 1999 in my childhood, forgot all about it and then years later in 1997/8 I worked in a market research centre in Richmond Hill, Surrey and Zienia also worked there part-time in between acting assignments. I got to know her quite well and she was a lovely, kind, very unassuming lady who had a lot of class. It was quite surreal really, I'd be sitting next to her at work conducting telephone surveys on behalf various companies then I'd go home and see her on the tv in Casualty or Eastenders, etc. Trivia I know but I have fond memories of those days. RIP sweet lady.
In the Space 1999, she sparkled like a tiny beautiful jewel. If not for her, I would not be interested in the series. So sad she is not with us any more. ...
@@davidfrost2819 I loved Zienia, to the point of dedicating a song by Jean Ferrat to her, "Love to lose reason". I myself translated the lyrics into English. I even fell in love with it! In the episode "The big circle", she runs in the mist of a wood simply dressed in a leopard skin (bought since by an American fan). She shows beautiful legs, her animal skin molds her body, she shouts like a clueless little animal, ... she is sublime ... Since she had no text to say, she could scream, and to help her in her mad rush, Ron Fry made her drink gin between scenes. So she finds herself drunk, and manages to run almost naked in the fog! In addition, as we were in November 1974, Ron Fry folded it in a large plastic bag between each scene cut, so that it did not get cold. She is remembered on the set, Ron Fry therefore removes her plastic, and lo and behold the knot that tied her animal skin on it unraveled unfortunately, revealing wonders! Instead of Ron Fry, I would have taken her in my arms! But I was only 11 at the time, and she was 28! She no longer had to ask Ron Fry for permission to pee! And that's how I got a crush on Zienia. I had set my sights on Barbara Bain, but ultimately, I preferred Zienia, all full of kindness and simplicity! Barbara Bain, as she was already known thanks to "Impossible Mission Agency", took herself seriously like a Hollywood star! It looked like the "Elisabeth Taylor of the small screen"! Her husband, Martin Landeau, despite his irascible character, was more sympathetic, and helped Zienia to play her role. But then, his wife, Barbara, an idiot finished! Besides, she didn't leave lasting memories in the studio!
@@davidfrost2819 I had set my sights on Barbara Bain (née Mildred Fogel), and finally I realized that it was Zienia that I loved ... She was beautiful, sweet, talented, but no one really took care of her career, like me in my profession, hence this affinity ... She would have had to move to the USA, to California, there, Martin Landau would have made her meet directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Henri Hathaway, Raoul Walsh, ... But she preferred to stay in England near from her family... Some other details, apart from dance and comedy, did she know how to sing? Did she have a beautiful voice? Did she know how to play a musical instrument? To drive, she had difficulties, I don't know if she finally had her driving license ... Did she know how to ride a horse? I don't think she was interested in martial arts either ... Maybe taichi, slow motion martial arts ... Myself I tried, but really I don't understand anything at all ! I prefer organic chemistry and mineral chemistry! All these questions formed strings for Zienia, she was not very well known, but she knew how to do many things ...
What a pity that I don't know enough English, what Zienia evokes seems as touching as funny and interesting! And at almost 60 years old, what a sublime body, like a young girl !!! We are ten years after the Lyons Convention, in 1995. "The time is an illusion" as the spirit of the Tritonians says to the Commander Koenig, at the end of the episode: "Ring around the Moon".
I used to love her character too she was like the lieutenant uhura of space 1999 her and Paul's on and off type relationship was something that should have continued in season 2 but actually they killed Paul and cut her part by about half and that made season 2 less interesting to me although I still liked it
Always wondered what happened to that leopard skin costume from "The Full Circle". Zienia reveals here that she didn't keep it but wished she had! She looked fantastic in that outfit.
Don't talk about it, I was betrayed by Google's automatic translation system! The small gear in the bottom of the screen banner. Google translated Zienia's words to me like a Patagonian. Incomprehensible! I tried to listen, but I lack the practice to understand English orally. I assure you, the computer almost made a gliding flight !! Because of that bad translator that asshole from Google! I even insulted Zienia, I was so furious! What forgive me, but where she is, she must have understood what I felt! However, she says very interesting things, but because of the language barrier, I can't follow! Damn it ! You also understand why I do not participate in any convention in England: no one to translate me, I would not understand anything, and in order to avoid a scandal, I prefer not to disturb myself.
Nice video and beautiful interview. We all knew that the quality of year two was considerably lower than the quality of the first year (lack of professor Bergman, ridiculous character of Maya, confusing and ridiculous scripts). Now we know why and the background: budget cuts, incapable producer, actors poorly treated, etc)
@Alan Cogan Again him, as you say, and who tries to be reasonable, trying to repair the harm I caused. All because of a language barrier problem! Look at the comments I put in "RichVoyage" and "Space: 1999". The idea of ending it like General Boulanger who committed suicide at the grave of his mistress in Ixelles, on September 30, 1871, has not abandoned me. This voluntary reduction will not be done with a Beretta of which I took a malicious pleasure in destroying, as I gave you a clinical description, but another less messy means. The terrain is still very unstable ...
@Alan Cogan Oh well too bad. These words unhappy words towards Zienia, because of a computer idiot who shit in my boots, and he continues besides ... This unacknowledged love for Zienia, then finally confessed when I was old enough to understand, when I saw her running almost naked in this episode. This banal drivel as you take pleasure in qualifying it, was reported to me in the newspaper "L 'Aigle", which received all the members of the French fan club "Cosmos 1999", created in 1988, and disappeared in 2003, directed by Richard Plumel and Chantal Batiston. I even participated in a convention in 1993 in Lyon, whose guests were Prentis Hancock, and Suzanne Roquette. When I try to teach you something, you take it very badly! Zienia would not appreciate the way you defend her memory, especially for people who are critical.
Heard that Merton had died. As for Space.... never got on with it... missed UFO, both were far fetched, Space was OTT with all those silly stunts and studio sets.
Zienia Merton's finest performance as Sandra Benes is in "Message From Moonbase Alpha". Rest in peace, Zienia.

Love to lose the reason
Like not knowing what to say
To have only you on the horizon
And know no season
Than by the pain of leaving
Love to lose the reason
Ah, it's always you that we hurt
It's still your broken mirror
My poor happiness, my weakness
You that we insult and that we abandon
In all martyred flesh
The end, the fatigue and the cold
All the miseries of the world
It's through my love that I believe it
In her I carry my cross
And of their nights my night is based
Love to lose the reason
Like not knowing what to say
To have only you on the horizon
And know no season
Than by the pain of leaving
Love to lose the reason
Love and happiness of another kind
It trembles in winter and summer
Always hand in a door
Heart like a dead leaf
And bloody lips
Love to lose the reason
Like not knowing what to say (not knowing what to say)
To have only you on the horizon
And know no season
Than by the pain of leaving
Love to lose the reason
Love to lose the reason
Like not knowing what to say (not knowing what to say)
To have only you on the horizon
And know no season
Than by the pain of leaving
Love to lose the reason
Love to lose the reason

This was simply wonderful. I would listen to about 20 minutes at a time here and there, she was a joy to listen to.
