What Do Electrolytes Actually Do?

  • This week Reactions takes a look at the chemistry behind electrolytes and sports drink science. Sports drink commercials love talking about them, but what are electrolytes, why do we need them, and what happens if we don’t have enough? Electrolytes are salts that, once in our bodies, help our cells move water around. They also enable the nerve impulses that keep our hearts beating, our lungs breathing and our brains learning. But we can also lose them - for example, by sweating. Given all the ins and outs of electrolytes, should you reach for that bright orange sports drink after running around the block?

    Sums up the entire anatomy class in a few minutes. You want to drink this either during a heavy workout, a hot day or just worked several hours of manual labor. Water just runs through the body and hardly stays. A bottle of any electrolyte filled drinks can be all the difference between. I know so, drank too much water and, boy the bathroom and I became friends that day. Now with gatorade.... let's say i need no break until i got home

    can you do a video explaining the benefits and side effects of creatine in high endurance exercises

    • @arizonatea3734
      @arizonatea3734 3 года назад

      Creatine creates more ATP in your muscles, which is the anaerobic outout. High endurance typically means its aerobic (with oxygen). Kinda like why you can only sprint for under 60sec because your ATP will diminish then after a few minutes your liver can regenerate it. I used creatine for power lifting and martial arts since you must be aerobic and anaerobic. But strictly long distance athletes i dont think theres a benefit plus it'll make you gain a few pounds until you've took the excess out of your body.

      1234567890sunshine because sea water has mainly sodium which is essential but not in extremely high amounts like sea water. And when you have sodium you should have potassium as well because they balance each other out and sea water lacks potassium

      I had a coworker say the same thing after a very hot and laborious day. But I wasn’t at sea. I was on a construction site with access to clean drinking water. So I dumped salt packets in my mouth and drank normal water. Just a quick binge of salt packets to replenish the salt in my body for one brief moment and that was it. I didn’t do this for days on end because I wasn’t stranded at sea. Drinking sea salt water non stop just makes you thirstier and too much of anything isn’t good

My big question though is do electrolytes have anything to do with reducing cramps? I'm prone to getting epic foot and leg cramps all night which seems worse when I exercise. I thought taking supplements with electrolytes and specifically potassium was supposed to help with this but haven't noticed much improvement.

    When i work out i try to work my legs and muscles instantly to absorb more drill will power. ..i do drink water but it doesn't always help the way it should so i concentrate more on, drinking sports drinks to give me, that energy boost. But give me far enough fuel to, optimize enough electrical ,charges in my body to keep me stimulated ,through hydration. Where i can continue my work out performances properly. Without messing up,hurting my self or over do it all wrong. I basically drink clear drinks an do lots of drill running laps even weight lifting to increase super strength, enhanced speed an balance when i need to.I tone my body more then likely to get my body use to the feeling, by hard pushing extra tumoral speed positioning,in my muscles I'm a faster running at some point i could run about 30 to 100 meter miles or more per hour,per second or per mintute.Normally i do a lot of fast running practice for empowering my bone structure and muscle mass to take all that pressure i can get.I train a lot before work...after work and during work...or when I'm at home ,so i don't lose focus in what I'm doing.I work like a janitorial 5 hour day job it's pretty constructive and intense to do a lot. But thankfully since.... I'm a very young stronger faster, heavily built type of guy I'm a professional pro at it, to handle the challenges.I usually continue and stop when i need to slow down,or catch my breath while walking so i don't tire myself out.But the perfect beauty of it is that i don't need ,much of a trainer to help coach me into that line of work since it's very,costly to deal with it smh....i don't need much help at all,since I'm doing fine on my own from, training practice.But i only try to get some, simple tips on how i can improve my work out performances more easily said then done. So i just take notes and learn, slighter vocabulary definitions to understand words based off fitness benefits..but i feel so damn good and super indestructible when i drink those sports drinks when need, them the most. I feel super powerful and invincible when, i work that hard too no lie i feel all beastly from blowing off steam, when i use that stuff💪😉💔💔❤❤💖💖💖✊🙏.

    Just eat a banana before working out and put some salt in your water after. It works well

    I just can't see how a tiny bit of salt, smallest amount of potassium, a tons of sugar and dye can replenish so much. They do work for sure

      Well they don't really work well but coconut water and other things have waaaay more potassium and some sodium and hardly any sugar. They also have calcium and vitamins while sports drinks don't even have enough electrolytes for non athletes that don't even sweat that much
