- Richard Brook appeared on Dragons Den securing investment from two of the fiercest Dragons- Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden. However, the TV show didn't tell the full story behind Sockitz safety shield. Richards invention is designed to improve safety for electricians and other trades during rewires.

Genius idea! One of the biggest problems with rewires is having to wait for plastering before doing 2nd fix. Great product, I will be getting some to try!

I thought he seemed a genuinely decent guy when I saw him on Dragon's Den. Most of the people who go on there seem like they think they're a genius (despite their stupid product) who's entitled to the Dragon's money. Whereas this dude seemed like he had a good idea and needed a bit of help. He wasn't greedy, admitted his shortcomings and didn't seem like he was full of shit. I hope he's doing well.

Quick tip..... get yourself some burring bits and are Tungsten Carbide bits, when a tiler has covered the screw or too tight for the outlet back. Chuck up the burr bit in a combi drill, fast setting and they will file/ grind back both ceramic and porcelain. They will also do the same for plastic, metal, plasterboard. I carry 2 in my pocket, 8mm with flat end and 12mm with round end. Wood doesn't work as well, not aggressive enough and will clog cutting surface.

We used these years ago. Called the yoozy box if I remember right. Always liked them. They make for a safer rewire but the plasterers loved them as if the chasing had been a bit of a disaster due to the condition of the existing plaster or bricks, and they needed to build the wall back out with bonding before skimming, it supports the plaster and gives a surface for them to plaster to. It keeps the back box and accessory nice and clean too. I'd personally advise that the electrician allows a cost to return and remove them as there is sometimes issues with other trades cross threading the lugs in the back box or clipping cores with the accessory bolts.
Yoozybox is a plasterguard not BS certified so should not be used when circuits are live only when circuits are dead just to stop plaster getting into the connections and back box . Safety shield is BS certified so circuits can be made live and fully operational .

Massively sceptical about the use of this at first,then the more I thought about it (and the fact I’m currently doing a occupied Rewire at the moment) the more I came round.
Just ordered some now.
Would be handy to have a 70mm circular one for recess lights-I’ve cut holes in lath & plaster and the ceiling gave away,a 70mm version would mean I could leave the plasterer to do the ceiling once I’ve gone.

what a brilliantly simple idea! one thing I would comment on to possibly improve would be to perhaps include some form of clip on them to hold the standard length screws when in use and then hold the longer screws whilst in storage, to save them getting lost. I know a spark would no doubt have a plethora of spares in their bag, but your average Joe Painter or Muck Slinger might not do, so may resort to other methods of securing!

If you think plasterers are gonna be happy to have to plaster around multiple sockets and switches then think again. Tiling and painting ok

It's designed to be used during rewires were open chases are not plastered the same day as the rewire to comply with reg 522.4 . I wouldn't use them on new builds before plaster board is fitted but it does enable 2nd to be carried out straight after the walls have been plaster boarded
Second fix nice new expensive socket fronts and leave them at the mercy of a potential messy plasterer . No thanks .
That's a fair point. No use being a conscientious Lecky only to be followed by a slapdash plasterer/ painter.
Still... I guess it's up to the householder to bring them to book if they're shoddy.
An elasticated cover would be a good solution to that.
Re testing is still needed after putting socket back in to back box. What if a cable is moved over to the left or right to much and the screw ends up snagging it. Houston we have a problem. RCD may not trip but start using socket with a bit of power then problem is found as we do test on 500V
Plus the all the accessories are gonna get covered in plaster and paint
Social housing rewires are the main use for the product were you have to ensure power to all points at the end of each day , the plaster doesn't carry out his work until 1 or 2 days after the rewire .
Shoe cover bags are used by the following trades to stop plaster and paint splashing they sockets & switches
I’m not saying it dosnt have a place in the market place, it’s just limited as most general jobs ( not social housing) the plasterers will not want these sticking out, just saying
There are arround 500k social housing rewires & upgrades carried out every year . It's a very big market which I think a lot of people overlook. Safety comes first as they are all occupied housing refurbishments .

No Yoozybox is a plasterguard only to be used when circuits are isolated not live. It's not BS certified so should be used as a safety shield . Although people used the plastergaurd on live circuits.

Not very sexy but quite effective
Very good idea, but the cost is too high. At the moment they are more expensive than backboxes themselves - Sockitz work out about £0.77 for a single and £1 for a double (from Sockitz eBay page). I don't know many electricians that would leave £100 quid in disposables behind on a typical 100 point house rewire. It needs to drop below 10p per point, then you'll see it everywhere. If this goes on sale in any chain store, it will take couple of days for someone to derail your business model by making gazzillion disposables in China out of recycled cardboard in single and double size, they'll be flat packed for shipping, easy to use as Starbucks cup holders, sell in packs of 10 for a quid and make absolutely no difference to us, decorators or the planet. Be wise Sockitz - take my tip for free and do it now. Stiff, pre-folded cardboard, 10 for a quid, 100 for £9 is where it's at.
Cardboard doesn't comply with BS5733 neither does certain cheap plastic. So always buy electrical products that are BS certified not cheap Chinese.

@Von Reagan, The lecky has completed the install, completed the necessary inspection & testing etc; is off site with no requirement to return as the site has been left in a safe compliant condition. She is now free to go on making more money elsewhere on another job. I think it is a great product.
