  • John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ visits Funky Fungi, an Indoor Commercial Mushroom farm that is less than a year old and on track to make $200,000 this year growing mushrooms.
In this episode, you will learn how mushrooms are grown in just 14 days that can be sold for $20 a pound (retail) or $10 a pound (chef direct)
First, John will tell you how the farmer, Jewell quit her job as a stockbroker to grow mushrooms, he will then go into the warehouse building to give you a full tour of the facilities.
You will learn about all the major areas of the farm where different tasks take place. First, you will learn what the mushrooms eat (grows on). Next, you will learn how the growing medium is sterilized by taking a steam sauna.
You will then enter the clean room where the growing medium is inoculated with mushroom spawn, and kept in the right temperature to colonize their bags.
Next, you will learn why its important to climate control your growing area, to ensure the best production, color, and flavor of the mushrooms.
You will discover why it's important to wear a mask to protect your lungs from any kind of small foreign particulate.
Next, you will learn how an unconventional bag cutting technique can increase your harvest.
You will then discover what some nice blue oyster mushrooms look like when they almost ready for harvest.
You will learn how the mushrooms are stored post-harvest in a walk-in cooler using a 5,000 BTU window air conditioner unit.
Next, John will interview Jewell the Fungi Diva to learn more about growing mushrooms and Funky Fungi Farm.

There seems to be so much overhead in this method of growing mushrooms. The mushroom growers in my area all grow on logs and they're making $2000 a week and there's very little overhead. I am wondering how much people farmed Mushrooms in an area such as Ireland which had Potato Famine. Could mushrooms be farmed and dehydrated for storage? It seems mushrooms could supplement the use of dehydrated potatoes during times of need?
There must be a way to get a good deal on the substrate.

This is a great video overviewing the process. The only thing I would question, if I were doing this myself, is using soy as a growing medium considering the amount of GMO and glyphosphate use in the soy industry. How much of that is being transferred into the mushrooms? Also, where are the wood chips being sourced?

I can't believe I spent months researching this and I just lost my first flush ever because I had to spend a week away from home for work. When I got back, they (white oysters) were already turning the caps up, do anyone know if they can still be eaten like that? At least the results were impressive, they fruited before completing 4 weeks old. Anyway, I gotta hope for the second flush. I still don't know how those guys taste, here in my region it's not so common to find them. If I don't poison myself in the way, I'll let you guys know of the news xDDDDDDDD

People don't get too excited. 200,000$ isn't all profit. Running business requires loads of cash flow too. After all the expenses deduction she has probably left with 20,000.
