Alsemenor ungoliant was powerful enough to kill the strongest Valar. I'm prettt sure her daughter would be powerful enough to change form is she desired.
Well, it's possible, of course. But considering we've had no sort of indication that Ungoliath's daughters were anything else but very large, hungry and intelligent spiders, I still find a bit odd that Shelob would be a shapeshifter.
I like how the writers had Sauron betray Shelob, like her mother Ungoliant was betrayed by Sauron's mentor Melkor/Morgoth in The Silmarillion. That was a nice history repeating itself from mother to daughter.
Aidan Douglas Mellor promised Ungoliant anything she wanted after she helped him destroy the trees of light. She asked for the Silmarion. He betrayed her by breaking his promise and then summoning a host of balrogs to repel her. So she fled.
I mean, at that point, he had severely lessered himself by spilling his essence into the very earth itself. Had it been before that, I am quite sure Melkor would have decimated Ungoliant
"In other news, a devastating earthquake rocked Oxford earlier today. Scientists are baffled as to the earthquake's origins, but some experts have suggested it may have been caused by the the late JRR Tolkein furiously spinning in his grave."
If this was possible, he'd have started the zombie apocalypse over the Hobbit movie - I honestly don't think this game commits as much horrendous mangling of the lore as some state.
Iain Howe That is objectively absurd. Literally less than 5% of the 2 garbage games are remotely Canon or even plausible. This is a disgrace to Tolkien and it disgusts me how it was obvious they wanted to milk morons who has seen the movies but don't actually know shit about The Lord of the Rings. They could have made they're world but nope gotta be greedy bastard and use someone else life work and then butcher it but keep the title.
It might well be subjectively absurd, but it's just an opinion. They obviously wanted to use an existing and very popular IP because that's how you make more money. When making a commercial product based on an existing work of lore, you want to seek out corners that haven't been fleshed out and add in new themes, characters and so forth - you can't travel over the same ground as the original author. See, that's why I hated the Hobbit movie more. There IS a story called the Hobbit and it's subjectively very good indeed but Peter Jackson felt the need not to massage the story beats to better fit a different medium, but rather to create swathes of garbage narrative. A game HAS to invent.
This isn't fleshing out corners of the world left unexplored, this is changing an existing character into something Tolkein never intended. Just like how they made fucking Isildur and Helm Hammerhand into god damn ringwraiths when it was never suggested that they were and when the nine ringwraiths existed well before Isildur's time. Then there's the concept of making a second One Ring, the absurdity of which should be apparent simply by reading this sentence. The One Ring is unique, a manifestation of the deathless malice and hatred of a fallen angel, an incarnation of his very being. Kellog's Booberries can't just make another one. He's just some chump elf. The whole 'Celebrimbor stole the Ring and warred with Sauron' bit objectively enevr happend in the lore, either. I could go on and on and on about how much this game butchers existing lore, but we'd be here all day. suffice to say, this is not 'fleshing out the world', it's pissing on a timeless classic.
Yeah, I'm not suggesting for a MOMENT that any of this is Canon - no way. Some of the changes are VERY prominent, Celebrimbor's campaign, the date of the fall of Minas Ithil, Shelob not being the current avatar of consuming hunger - I'm sure you already have the list. This obviously has to be considered as an alternate timeline - my concern is whether the story is internally consistent. We only know, for certain, the identities of two of the Nazgul - the Witch King and his Lieutenant, Khamul. Three others were said to be Numenorean Kings, who traded their souls for eternity. That leaves four of the Nazgul whose identities we just don't know anything about, at all. We know that Nazgul can be killed - we see the Witch King killed - so it's not impossible that two of the four Nazgul died and were replaced by Isildur and Helm Hammer hand. It's worth remembering that Celebrimbor isn't just 'some chump of an elf' either, he's the guy who forged the Three, the rings that basically preserved Middle Earth for the whole of the Third Age. He made that freaky back door into Moria. He's the son of Feanor. Could he make another Master Ring? Ehhh... Sauron is one of the Maiar of Aule, you've got to think he has the edge in terms of craft, even over Feanor and Celebrimbor - but if anyone could do it, it would be either Celebrimbor or his father.
this is a true story after sex, the male partner would be killed and "sacrifice must be made" (spider route) you want your kids to see a father like you not yourself in the grave!! Rofl.... try look at the animal tv channel, female spider kills male spider after sex. i hate both sides, elves and spiders, i cant have both childs at once or i cant have either one of them. elves are liars, and spiders are traps. i wishes both are humans so i can have both waifus/wifes. why cannot i have it? wait, i need the good ending to raise kids and with a good wife (if doesnt give me options for two wives at least i need one im not a greedy ones) and not to gain the nothing just to repeat the endless cycle of wars.
@marcus24000 the soldiers attacking here are the nine they are wraiths enslaved sauron and the elf is celebrimbor and he is a wraiths and the soldiers saw her as a spider
@@SammyBooy2814 yes it is. When she went to middle earth she assumed a spider form. When Sam hurt her she tried to kill him with a stinger which spiders dont have
I'm surprised at how many, "MUH LORE!" comments there are. I thought it was common knowledge that neither Shadows of Mordor or Shadows of War are canon. That pretty much settles it for me. This is sort of an alternate timeline version of LOTR. It's like fanfiction. Cool? Yes. Official? Hells no. Relax, your lore remains in tact.
JRR tolkein handed the red book to us to finish those pages. Its up to the fans to call something canon or fanfiction. ...Horny drives me to claim this as canon.
It's funny how people get that mad about a videogame and a book, like sure none of it makes sense but it's fun and it's entertaining and maybe some of us like to think somehow it fits into the lore. Chad 100%
@@SithEmpiredidnothingwrong come on. Just let people have their fun. You don't have to be a wet blanket every time the lore goes slightly away from the exact texts. Why are you like this?
I... don't know what to think of this development. I've read the book, I know the lore. Shelob isn't just some giant spider, but giving her the ability to take on a human form AND making her Sauron's former squeeze? That's a bit tough to swallow.
Ungoliant is pure darkness. It makes sense it could take the form of the most powerful temptation. Men are bound to fall for greed and to die, just like Talion does. Not in the books, but somehow swallowable.
Though Morgoth and Ungoliant did have an alliance but that went a little south for Morgoth when Ungoliant betrayed Morgoth for not holding his end of the bargain they struck.
They basically wanted a “Dark Galadriel”. And since Shelob is considered her opposite in the books, they made Shelob a “Galadriel”. She literally has the same role in the game for Talion that Galadriel has in the books with Frodo and Sam.
I love that this game shows a grimy, grey side of Middle Earth. As side we know always eventually slides into evil, but as side we know must exist because of canon characters like Isuldur, Saruman and Smeagol...
Apparently Shelob is now a hot, leggy woman in a rather flattering dress because the Devs thought she was secretly a hero. But it was mostly an excuse to have a hot leggy woman around for no reason.
Excerp from Return of the King: "But still, she was there, who was there before Sauron, and before the first stone of Barad-dûr; and she served none but herself, drinking the blood of Elves and Men, bloated and grown fat with endless brooding on her feasts, weaving webs of shadow; for all living things were her food, and her vomit darkness." Basically a giant, fat, bloated monstrosity, and not an attractive woman. If this was canon Shelob would have wanted to jab the main character immediately, then drag him to her lair where she could feast on his flesh in the stinking darkness.
It could be also that the power of "the one ring" made her attack Frodo much like it did with Boromir. Additionally, having seen Sauron grow in his might again she may of thought that by taking the one ring she could defeat Sauron.
DarthLeapyous That's one of my favorite passages from Lord of the Rings. Shelob was scarier as a bloated creature that only cared about her own hunger.
@nemo pouncey - Well spider or not, a creature can still have babies. Spiders, deer, other animals and insects do have babies, but are not humans. I am just saying she was never a spider. Ungoliant and She-Lob are creatures of the darkness, undefined and formless. They just chose a spider looking forms. If you notice She-Lob has a stinger in her spider form, which is not part of a spider.
Much hotter, darker, more mysterious, and clearer about what she desires more than Yennefer. Also, she doesn't go all: "CIRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!".
I find it amazing that someone like Sauron had a relationship, especially that Shelob was the one he was with, it makes me think, that their relationship was probably one sided
Miguel Álvarez Gandalf is an angel of a an Archangel or Demigod. Shelob is a spawn of pure darkness. Differences is key to logic. You are lacking, educate yourself.
I always wondered if Shelob was into the politics of Middle Earth, she had to have been intelligent being a child of Ungoliant. I dunno if this is canon, but I think how they developed her is really cool.
Nah. I doubt she had the intelligence of a human. She was smarter than a spider, but she was never a spider in the first place. Ungoliant, Shelob's mother, was not even a spider. They were creatures of the darkness. Sauron used her, and fed her, to guard the back entrance. Shelob was just an endless pit of hunger.
"Little she knew of or cared for towers, or rings, or anything devised by mind or hand, who only desired death for all others, mind and body, and for herself a glut of life. alone, swollen till the mountains could no longer hold her up and the darkness could not contain her." (Two Towers; Shelob's lair) So much for source material
She sough power so that nothing could contain her, but she was unconcerned with Rings of Power. Bit of a contradiction there. Anyone within Middle Earth OBSESSED with their personal accumulation of power would by default be concerned with the Rings of Power, were they to come to know of the existence of said Rings
So... Is this suggesting that Shelob was not always a spider monster? And in Tolkien, she is *just* a spider. She is a child of Ongoliant, but the children of Ongoliant were purely bestial, not anything like the anomalous spirit-thing that she was. She should not be able to shape-shift, since she's basically just a larger and more intelligent version of the spiders of Mirkwood, not some sort of Maya like Gandalf, Saruman or Sauron.
We never had an origin for Ungoliant and it was always rumored she was a dark spirit of some kind so this isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. Strange a weird direction to take her tbh.
Especially weird since she was powerful enough to kill a shitload of powerful elf soldiers in this and in the real canon she ends up getting killed by a tubby hobbit with a short sword.
Shelob an offspring of primordial Spider Ungoliant. She's weaker than a balrog as she couldnt manage to drain much of a power in her lifetime unlike her mother..she was fucking powerful so powerful and big that almost Pwn Morgoth... "Morgoth gave out a terrible cry of pain as she attacked, which was heard a company of Balrogs hibernating under the ruins of Angband. They awoke and immediately rushed to the aid of their Lord, tearing apart Ungoliant's webbing with their fiery whips and forcing her to break off her attack.Ungoliant's attack upon Morgoth left an echoing scream ever after on the land that gave the area the name Lammoth, and it is said to this day that when one screams in that place, the voice of the Dark Lord echoes back from the surrounding hills."
So for anyone who is annoyed at Shelob taking the form of an attractive humanoid: 1 - Maiar and Valar characters did this all the time in the TKverse (look cool/wise/beautiful) 2 - She is in the wraith world in this form. 3 - Even Tolkien had inconsistencies and huge revisions! There's some room for flexibility 4 - deal wit it
That humanoid form seems more appropriate for a human form for Ungoliath. Ungoliath is not only a great spider, but a physical form of Darkness. Tom Bombadil might be the physical form of light and whats good, he also had a humanoid form.
Mr Raptor He also had no other form so there goes any logic out of your petty argument. Holy God, some people can't remain coherent within one sentence. Truly shows the stupidity of our world and current education.
Mr Raptor My problem is you spewing nonsensical nonsense creating moronic confusion upon the Tolkien work. Newcomers think you are right and will defend this objective atrocity and in other words buy it, support this and make the untalented developers think "Well, it seems like no one cares about Tolkiens lore, as long as we cater to 12 year olds and their habits we can make Eowyn a prostitute next game why not guys?" You fail to see your own consequences and someone has to teach you the wrongfully things you're doing and hopefully make you stop doing it. The reason for hostility is that they have gotten enough money already for making a third disrespectful lore breaking game. Good job.
Emanuel Stenberg Ohh grow up. As long as you take on this debate in such an uncivilized and hostile way, you aren't worth at all at listening to, no matter if you are right or wrong. I most likely know Tolkien's stories way better than you do. You are worthless talking to.
If you take this version to be true, more so than Tolkien’s. You are a fool. One must accept the reality that versions exist. If not Tolkien’s, then certainly it is a parallel story embellished. No other true purpose than to be retold. Re-sold. It is up to your interpretation as to what it is. Open your mind.
I'd totally "slay" that spider. My weapon of choice would be a "spear" to "penetrate" her "armor". Once her armor is "broken" I would target her "weak points" with lots of "concentrated stabs". After the "battle" is over I'd "loot" whats left and stick my "finger" through her "ring" which belongs to me now! 14:58
1:25 I love how here, when Shelob says “to suffer” her human(?) form’s mouth doesn’t move, showing how that form is not real 9:51 same here 23:36 damn tho, this may not be accurate to the books but I really like this interpretation where she seems to transform into her spidery-self over time Also the scene in this when she’s heading towards the mountains and her limbs are moving so creepily is fantastic
Personally I quite enjoyed this version of shelob, and that is as a long standing tokien fan and person who prefers giant monsters over human-like threats. I simply place it and the rest of Shadow of Mordor in the category of "Interpretations" and that's great, and I kinda wish that the wonderful mythology was more up for interesting twists and interpretations in a fashion similar to myths such as the norse or greek. As for Shelob herself, I kinda loved the Dark Galadriel vibe she had going on and thought it was an interesting twist. I don't think it was stated, but in my head, I assumed they were simply assuming that Ungoliant was one of the fallen Ainur (an interpretation Ive seen before) in which case its not outrageous to assume she and her offspring would have the ability to change form.
Honestly, given that Ungoliant's children are half Eldritch Horror and half Spider/Maiar chimera this was the change to lore in the game that I found least jarring. It always seemed weird that Ungoliant's eldest daughter who came from a genius level mother and intelligent father would be a mindless monster. Now changing the fall of Minas Ithil by a couple of centuries? That's slaughtering the lore.
I’m a couple of years late but I must say that having read the books and played the games I much prefer the later Shelob to the former. As interesting as a giant demon spider that only wants to eat on anything that comes into her lair may be, it lacks the depth that this one has. The game devs could have easily just created a new character and gave them a new name and they would still be better than the original Shelob but instead they gave her purpose, and substance. Not much character depth can be had from a literal spider.
Also no, they didn't give her substanțe just cuz they turned her into a woman to attract the boys. She was always a spider, and there was no need to change her
Deffinetely interesting characters- none of the main game's playable characters or allies are truly good or evil ....... they just pursue their own purposes in middle-earth
*Shelob ready to devour Frodo* *Sam appears in the last second* Sam:COME ON YOU FILTH! IT'S ME YOU WANT!! *Shelob turn into woman again* Shelob:It's you I want indeed small man 😉 Sam:HOLD UPPPPPPPP!!
I don't mind Shelob having shapshifting/illusion power and showing up as a human. I mind her getting involved in all the ringmaking and ringtaking, and making alliances that don't involve food for herself. "Little she knew of or cared for towers, or rings, or anything devised by mind or hand, who only desired death for all others, mind and body, and for herself a glut of life, alone, swollen till the mountains could no longer hold her up and the darkness could not contain her." --The Two Towers
It may not be canon but I find it kinda cool that she was betrayed by Sauron and that is what changed her into a monsterous Spider. Sort of the thing I imagine happening to the Lady of the Light if she did take the ring from Frodo only with a slightly different result.
This definitely adds a lot more character to Shelob, and also (for me at least) seems to show that Peter Jackson was right on the nail for his portrayal of Shelob. In the Return Of The King Extended Edition special features, when he was talking about creating Shelob, he said "I wanted Shelob to feel really old, and really, kind of, sick. Not physically sick, but sort of a--mentally sick, psychologically sick." And after seeing this backstory, I can definitely see how she would have gone Bellatrix Lestrange-style batshit crazy.
Why does Sauron even need to have an extended backstory with her? What does sexy Shelob even contribute? She's basically Sauron's pet cat in the book, a pet he feeds from time to time.
She didn't turn to human when she encounter Frodo or Samwise! Actually she had A GIGANTIC chance to do something funny with Samwise instead of fighting but this never happened
Imagine if Shelob had actually transformed with Frodo and Sam. Imagine if she had proceeded to warn Frodo of the price he would pay for destroying the ring of the dangers of releasing Celebrimbor
I love how so many people hate this and call it a travesty. Chill. It's not canonical to Lord of the Rings' lore, anyway, so what does it matter? For all the faults in the game's lore, it's nothing compared to Peter Jackson's take on The Hobbit. Now that, my friends, is a travesty. Those films are a cash grab joke. I feel like the Shadow of games respected the source material far more than Jackson's latest in the franchise.
I know this is shelob however the game makes her more out to be like ungoliant instead. In the books (as far as I can remember been a long time) ungoliant was describe as a shape shifting female entity that preferred a form similar to that if a spider and was able to weave webs of shadows that had a strong craving for light. It's also unknown if or how she died (mainly assumed she was devoured by shelob and other spiderlings that she birthed). So every time I play shadow of war I always assumed this is actually ungoliant pretending to be shelob (or it was avatar name to keep her hidden since elves would know her true name and would seek to kill her since she was responsible for feeding in the tree of light) and when she was "betrayed by sauron she fled into the mountains and there gave birth to her last children they fed on her because of the light that was inside her once dead her last off spring all scattered but one. That one thrived and grew with all the orcs she fed on in ungoliant cave many believed her to be shelob not realizing that ungoliant (pretending to be shelob) was actually killed and replaced which explains why sauron didn't try to kill her upon discovery, why shelob is more spider than female spider entity, why shelob is different from the movie to game and why shelob here was very strong when you first met her being capable of capturing a spirit. Anyways this is a tolkien fan having fun with it so please don't throw rocks at me lol. But if you have a theory of your own please reply I would love to read them lol
I like this theory. :) How does the vision of Sauron betraying Shelob fit into it though? If this "Shelob" is actually Ungoliant, one would think she'd have probably learned from the mistake with Morgoth and the Silmarils...
@@ecthox-1mork909 that is true but unlike morgoth sauron was a better deceiver and knew how to play on others greed and dark desires. It's true you would think that after morgoth she wouldn't be too trusting however we don't know how long she knew sauron nor when he found her. My guess is sauron promised her revenge (knowing that morgoth is sealed away for a time), promised her power, a means to rule and perhaps a means to satisfy her hunger. Unlike morgoth sauron had a better mind of seducing others to his will.
No wonder some authors refuse to let Hollywood or the gaming industry touch their works. They taint whatever they touch. The balance??? This isn't freaking Star Wars.
What’s always really bugged me is why Shelob didn’t have her spiders close Talion’s wounds. I get he’s the kind of character that’s supposed to die because of *when* his story takes place but if you write somebody like that, you need to be careful, cause you can’t leave room for the slightest opportunity for their life to be saved. At the very least, it likely would have still worked if they made Talion take Celebrimbor’s ring anyway for the power he would’ve found to be necessary to have.

Really nice irony how Shelob only deals in truth given the expression, "web of lies."
Also
She uses promises to ensnare Talion and co as well as weave tales like silk
The irony was that expression was started by Sauron.
Lesson learned: NEVER TRUST ELVES, only put your faith in the spider
this is a true story after sex, the male partner would be killed and "sacrifice must be made" (spider route) you want your kids to see a father like you not yourself in the grave!! Rofl.... try look at the animal tv channel, female spider kills male spider after sex. i hate both sides, elves and spiders, i cant have both childs at once or i cant have either one of them. elves are liars, and spiders are traps. i wishes both are humans so i can have both waifus/wifes. why cannot i have it? wait, i need the good ending to raise kids and with a good wife (if doesnt give me options for two wives at least i need one im not a greedy ones) and not to gain the nothing just to repeat the endless cycle of wars.

Ungoliant is pure darkness. It makes sense it could take the form of the most powerful temptation. Men are bound to fall for greed and to die, just like Talion does. Not in the books, but somehow swallowable.

"But still, she was there, who was there before Sauron, and before the first stone of Barad-dûr; and she served none but herself, drinking the blood of Elves and Men, bloated and grown fat with endless brooding on her feasts, weaving webs of shadow; for all living things were her food, and her vomit darkness."
Basically a giant, fat, bloated monstrosity, and not an attractive woman. If this was canon Shelob would have wanted to jab the main character immediately, then drag him to her lair where she could feast on his flesh in the stinking darkness.
DarthLeapyous so true. And she didn't care for towers or rings!
It could be also that the power of "the one ring" made her attack Frodo much like it did with Boromir. Additionally, having seen Sauron grow in his might again she may of thought that by taking the one ring she could defeat Sauron.
The Morning Sage Shelob doesn't care about Sauron or anything beyond her hunger.

I love how they basically made her a darker version of Galadriel
Golems connections with her will interpreted in a VERY different way in the movies
Keyword: "movies"
Because this is non-canon to the books.
The writers took some artistic license, Shelob was only just a Spider and Sauron saw her as his pet cat
kuzor0007 And Shelob is practically indiferent to Sauron XD
Especially weird since she was powerful enough to kill a shitload of powerful elf soldiers in this and in the real canon she ends up getting killed by a tubby hobbit with a short sword.
thehmc The book says that was because Sam use Shelob's own strengh to stab her with Sting. And Shelob don't die instantly, she die after some time.
Damn Stoya looks amazing in this game.
Mr. Potassium I get that reference!!!
So for anyone who is annoyed at Shelob taking the form of an attractive humanoid:
1 - Maiar and Valar characters did this all the time in the TKverse (look cool/wise/beautiful)
2 - She is in the wraith world in this form.
3 - Even Tolkien had inconsistencies and huge revisions! There's some room for flexibility
4 - deal wit it
Also this is basically fanfiction. Creative liberties are always taken.
Wise words my friend
That humanoid form seems more appropriate for a human form for Ungoliath. Ungoliath is not only a great spider, but a physical form of Darkness. Tom Bombadil might be the physical form of light and whats good, he also had a humanoid form.
Mr Raptor He also had no other form so there goes any logic out of your petty argument. Holy God, some people can't remain coherent within one sentence. Truly shows the stupidity of our world and current education.
Emanuel Stenberg
Whats your problem, why so hostile?
Mr Raptor My problem is you spewing nonsensical nonsense creating moronic confusion upon the Tolkien work. Newcomers think you are right and will defend this objective atrocity and in other words buy it, support this and make the untalented developers think "Well, it seems like no one cares about Tolkiens lore, as long as we cater to 12 year olds and their habits we can make Eowyn a prostitute next game why not guys?"
You fail to see your own consequences and someone has to teach you the wrongfully things you're doing and hopefully make you stop doing it.
The reason for hostility is that they have gotten enough money already for making a third disrespectful lore breaking game. Good job.
Emanuel Stenberg
Ohh grow up.

This game is not canon, also that would make a lot of the story have zero sense.

No one was begging for Shelob to have more character. Just a fat stinking spider.
If she was just s spider, it would have been boring.
Why does Sauron even need to have an extended backstory with her? What does sexy Shelob even contribute? She's basically Sauron's pet cat in the book, a pet he feeds from time to time.

"So let me get this straight: Shelob used to be a Spider lady, but now's she just a big spider?"

3:25 when i see a spider in my room
3:35 when same spider jumps on your face! 🤣🕷️
Shelob is half demon so shape shifting would be part of her powers. Just like Ungoliant.
