  • This is Zulu a male white phase albino tiger reticulated python.
    I turned him loose in the house to clean his cage. Zulu is displaying a defensive behavior which has likely been triggered due to being backed into a corner and me towering above.
    Sorry for the shaky video, I'm filming and trying to handle him at the same time. Zulu last weighed 54 lbs and approx 12.5ft
    Hook is a 5ft polygaboona by stoney

      This hasn't much to do with how smart the animal is. Lizards and snakes have relatively small cognitive skills and they are for the most part driven by insticts for example they often react to smell. If the owner is giving their reptile a positive reaction, than they will usualy react positvely to them because of the association of the owner with feeding, comfort, safety etc. But, there are situations that will nontheless trigger those creatures to attack or react agressively. Even the friendliest crocodile for example, can not help it and it will close it's mout if something is touching the tongue. Or if you happen to give the snake food and your finger or hand smells like the food, it will bite and attack as well. It's like a reflex. And this situation here, was a very great display of instinctive behaviour. This is how those animals survived for millions of years in the wild after all, and which made the in many cases the apex predator in their environment, like well Pythons or Crocodiles. And you should never ever forget this, even if you love your animals, but the can and will attack if they're triggered you have to understand their body language.

      He probably just wanted to stroke him from a safe distance to let the snake know he wasn’t trying to hurt him. Snakes don’t really have emotions like we do, but they can recognize their owners and become used to them. As the man said, his snake isn’t used to being on the floor outside his enclosure, so he was naturally afraid of anything that was big an approached him outside his safe space. The guy just needed to let his snake know he wasn’t a threat, so he rubbed him, and then pet him so the snake could recognize, “this is the human that brings me food.”

      CerealKillerOats because we humans learned that no animal exists for the pure purpose of hunting us, and that if we don't give an animal reasons to feel threatened it won't attack us. as long as a snake is regularly fed and does not feel stressed it has no reason to attack, just like any other animal :)

      Tools. Our ancestors were smart enough to invent tools to compensate for things we lacked. You ever wonder why lions are significantly faster and stronger than us yet it's us who use them as circus animals and not vice versa? We are not fast enough to catch rabbits, so we made traps. We are not stealthy enough to sneak up on a deer, so we shoot an arrow at it from afar. We don't have claws to fight off predators who attack us, so we make spears to impale them with. We don't wait for evolution to come along and give us a natural defense - we're too impatient and smart for that. When we lack something, we find a way to circumvent that weakness with inventions and keep it moving. This is why mankind rules the world.

      So they basically have heat vision and regular vision. Also snakes can smell in stereo so they effectively have smellavision too since the two parts of their tongues when transmitting signals to the scent receptors are differentiated letting them sense the direction of scent and compare how concentrated it is in each part of the tongue.

    I never saw the “touch with the hook to calm them down” tactic before but I learned it on my own with my own SMALL snakes, most of the time I’m able to do it with my hand but NOT when they are in striking position, once my hand enters their enclosure they’re going to be afraid but as soon as I gently touch their side and show them I’m not a threat they calm down and let me touch and hold them. A tag from one of my snakes really isn’t that bad, though of course if they constricted me that would cause some more damage. That’s a beautiful snake you have I hope he’s still doing well.

    • @wraith1320
      @wraith1320 6 месяцев назад

      Yeah, reptiles are much touchier while in their enclosures, in my experience. They probably see anything entering their “den” as threatening, since in nature… it pretty much always would be. Once you have them out, they seem to register what’s going on and go back into “chill mode”.

    It's fully understandable for a snake to see something like a human as a threat, we're simply much taller then they are and they have to find that very intimidating.

    if I saw that snake and he was close to me, I would jump on the ceiling, and grab on with my nails and get out of that room

    This is similar to my own python, he is often agressive, when I approach his vivarium, but once i gently poke him with a stick, he starts moving around and I can easilyy grab him...

    I love how you just push him along. It reminds me of a veteran cat owner pushing their cat across the floor to move them.
