I lived in the same neighborhood as Max Roach when he was alive and occasionally would see him walking about doing very normal things like food shopping. I absolutely introduced myself to him, and he was not only graceful, but he engaged in conversation with me.
Thank you for sharing this! I was at this concert and I still remember how powerful was this solo. The absolute demonstration of how musicality and talent goes behind pure technique. A great tribute of a true master of the drums!
Amazing talent. I hear tricks that bohnam stole. Max was a creative powerhouse. Could listen to him all day.
I had the wonderful privilege of being in the company of Max, Max and myself, one with one and no drums around. Walking, talking, drinking coffee and having a sandwich was an amazing experience. He was a giant of humanity, a deep and meaningful man. Coupled with being an amazing musician and creative force the world will not repeat
He was the rarest of things: he was original.

Aloha deeds not words ! Beautiful musical musician!true professor! 💚
ALWAYS and inspiration!
The greatest 3/4 time drum performance of all time, point blank
Saw him do this at a club called Keystone Korner in San Francisco in the early 80s.
As the rest of his band (quartet, quintet...can't recall) drifted offstage, he introduced it with "We'd like to feature our drummer now..."
Max Roach, one of the greatest, ever.
He looks like a statesman, or a preacher, a consummate gentlemen that also happens to kick ass on the drums (look at that match grip, 70's jazz snobs). I saw him play in 2000 in NYC. He was really old. But he could still play a thousand miles per hour. I can't imagine how great he was to see in the 1950s.
Harry Mack sent me here....this beautiful... difficult... original.
What is the speed of sound, anyway.
When I was at UMass, a philosophy professor told me that the Greeks had this expression, "the great-souled man".
From the sound of a lot of comments here, Max was one of them.
Bruford did a nice take of this, also.
Also Peart.
Yes, you’re right!
