It seems as though what is considered a "good" blood pressure level is continually being lowered to the point where nearly everyone will need to be on a prescription med or meds to get their level to that point. After 4 months on a ketovore diet I weaned myself off of 4 hypertension meds, some of which I had been taking for 20 years. My doctor was delighted and told me that since I no longer took any meds that I was the pharmaceutical companies' worst nightmare.
Also, when my BP lowered and I was off my meds, my systolic number was in the 120s and I told my doctor I was happy with that at age 68. My systolic pressure will vary during the day from the 120s, sometimes in the 130s to 140 and I'm no longer concerned when it gets to 140. Once it was considered for senior citizens that a normal systolic pressure for them was 100 plus their age and I'm well below that.
Well done. What a great achievement. I think I just helped my blood pressure by listening to Dr Mason - less stressing about the 130 systolic that I wasn't sure what do to change and more being confident I know I am doing the most important thing by getting insulin under control on a carnivore diet.
Well done! I had no really high blood pressure but with aging the trend was in the wrong direction... LCHF organic reals foods over 2 years and my systolic measure decreased from 140 to 120. (Repeated reliable measures) with age 66.

Loved the studies on BP and sodium. Wasn't aware there was a sodium/mortality study showing that mortality didn't increase until after a systolic of about 150-160s or so. Very interesting discussion indeed!
Dr Mason explained very convincingly in another podcast the action of insuline onto the kidney. It acts on the Aldosterone-receptor to reabsorbe the sodium IR gets along with excess sodium retention.
Thank you for the wonderful podcast. What an amazing doctor.. very generous with his information, gracious and I assume that he has wonderful bedside manners. If all the old doctors would think outside of the box or at least to be interested to broaden their knowledge. One only wishes to have a doctor, like doctor Mason, Keep on making wonderful podcasts. I bet everybody's grateful to you.
This whole coronavirus hullabaloo might have some advantage to it. If it weren't for the working from home scheme I would have definitely had less time and hence would not have probably come across keto diet. Now, thanks to dr Paul, dr Nadir Ali, Thomas DeLauer, dr Berg and others my awareness of what works for the body and not has never been higher which makes me able to challenge popular ideas that have been out there for decades. Gotta admit I was quite confused at the beginning about my LDL levels having gone through the roof (at 200mg), now I know it couldn't be better :) What makes me wonder is how long we'll still have to wait till we see a major change in what people put in their body. We can only hope it'll happen in less time than it took for the Sydney heart study to surface.
Tell it Dr Mason! As a licensed physiotherapist I see all the time, people don't understand why they take medications ... some of my clients have angioedema secondary to ACE inhibitor mefs, the doctor doesn't explain this, then they get prescribed diuretic medication, then they loose minerals from over urination..... it goes on and on... very upset about this
Never take what your doctor prescribes. Be only interested in the labs and diagnose tools. But be friendly and polite, so that you get the labs you want.. And take your health in your hands. Lifestyle, self-education. Be responsible for your health. Too many people expect too much from their doctors.. Dr Mason says himself "the doctor's job is education" but if they don't spend time to stay in the state of the art? What then?
I was going to comment on several mentally bookmarked moments, but with Paul Mason, unless your memory is top tier, writing them down is a good idea. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, the information he freely offers is derived from the same sources available to his professional associates- as well as everyone else. It amazes me that he consistently reads the same scientific data, and somehow, manages to see what others apparently cannot. That is impressive perspicacity. Were I a doctor compelled to be speaking on nutritional health, I’d be inclined to turn down the volume and concede (at least to myself..) that I was in deep water swimming with a very large fish.
I would never trust any doctor who wants to prescribe these 3 things... Insulin, statins or most blood pressure medications. If they say to limit salt, healthy fats or protien intake you need to run in most cases. If they say carbohydrates are essential or tell you to replace saturated fat with vegetable oils they are completely uneducated on nutrition. Either stay and educate them or find another doctor. Ive changed 3 doctors teachings so far about nutrition. Im working on my 4th right now. He is a retinologist that will be seeing how fast I am healing from eye injury surgery. He said 4 to 6 weeks to see results. Its only been 4 days and im already seeing clearly out of my damaged eye after surgery. Hes going to be shocked Monday morning when I see him. Instinctively he knew I was healthy when he first saw me. You cannot hide good health when you are an old guy like me. Its not normal in todays world to walk in a doctors office with no medication list, tanned and muscular. Use your great health to change these doctors minds. They will listen if you speak up. Thanks for all you guys do!
Thank you. I am now being more responsible for my health instead of lazily relying on someone else rehearsed puppet master educational background. What for my individual cell makeup. Studying myself. Researching me. I am my greatest experiment. Thanks again
I love the point around 43:30 regarding the almost reverence some old school researchers have for crops basically. I think this stems from the almost panic many had in the late 40s and 50s for the supposed population explosion and the very real possibility of global famine. The development of mono crop species like dwarf wheat and other ag processes was seen as an absolute miracle...and like many miracles it was literally worshipped as "The Way". For millions of years (the science is quite clear) available plants were a fall back food for our species.
I simply keep my attitude of "wait and see" for any finding on the microbiome. This research is still in children's shoes as they say in German As i like my real foods where plants offer a lot of colors, textures and tastes, i will go on eating them, mindfully, differentiating between the ones that are Ok for me and the ones that cause a little inflammatory reaction (nuts, seeds) But no gluten. Any food is dangerous. Eating and ingesting is a risky process. There is no perfect diet, this is always a trade off between benefits and "side effects". And i will keep trying this and that adapting. Clearly Fasting is simpler! These long discussions on what to eat and not to eat make out of me a fasting's adept.. So keep informed and eat mindfully.
I watched a video (posted by low carb down under i think?) of Prof Robert Lustig where he quoted "fibre is not important to you but is for your microbiome" is this correct? Would be great to hear more on this in detail. Thank You.
After much thought to what Dr Mason had to say in regards microbiome, maybe the fibre isn't needed for microbiome? People who are on carnivore diet for years and don't eat foods with fibre. So your gut microbiome adapts to what you eat?
I don't eat grains and legumes because they're better than animal products. I eat them because they're cheap. I'm hoping with intermittent fasting to minimise any potential for insulin resistance.
Can Dr. Paul Mason write a book listing all the lab tests what he knows is in optimal reference range in both USA and International units. I already know the typical reference ranges aren’t right; they have been altered, because of how they calculate them based on population rather than using very healthy people.
Is it true that Candida can feed on ketones and/or fat, which is actually more dangerous than it feeding on glucose? Please answer this, because I believe this is the reason so many people who do carnivore (even keto) start declining after about 6 months of the diet initially being very good. And because they have basically let their microbiome die out (due to no plant foods), it is even harder to get back to health (because the candida begins thriving after learning to use ketones/fat for energy, while the rest of the microbiome is being starved out). Firstly, about 50% of people who think they have candida don't actually have it. They have a different food intolerance which only a food intolerance test (tests 200 foods) can definitively state. So that means 50% of people who think they have candida and do the carnivore diet, are actually just getting the benefit from cutting out the food(s) that they are intolerant to (along with all the stuff they aren't). But for the other 50% who actually have real candida overgrowth, they could potentially be digging themselves a much deeper hole. It is usually recommended that people on a candida diet cut out all sugar and grains, but still maintain the bare minimum carbs to actually prevent ketosis from taking place (50-60g, but its individual some more some less) The 2 tests you need to do is a full Food intolerance test, and a complete digestive stool analysis which will show what species of whatever bad pathogens is present (it might even be something else other than candida, since 'candida' is very much a blanket statement). Unless you get those tests done, you are playing fast and loose with your health by adopting diets like this. Please address this.
Do you know some serious references in Y-T dealing with the microbiome ? I'd liked to dive into that subject.. This research field has just started and there is so much to learn... Mason mentioned once "an elimination diet" by Autoimmune diseases as a better name than a carnivore diet (ethos he said) This would mean that after a "purification" period, you could start reintroduce cautiously some plants foods knowing which lectins they have For me this is as simple: i have compared my teeth with the ones of my cat, who is definitely a carnivore. Archeologues do that. Teeth tell about the diet. We are scientifically and evolutionary no pure carnivores. But carnivores eaters get emotional about this.. (why?) But i respect the experiment of Dr Mason on this field. Wait and see. Nature will speak. The biological laws will apply, regardless of opinions and beliefs. In 20 years? Good studies for microbiome-researchers: on the guts and health of carnivore eaters, who experiment for them. I am curious ..
The BP topic was new to me. Also thought 120/80 is the good number. I tend to have around 140 systolic too. Does anyone know more about the reality of diastolic number? For me that's mostly about 90, getting it to 80 only after a few days of fasting.
The best is 110/60, all healthy children has it. From my knowledge the second number has to be half of first plus 10 to be considered ok. So if you have 120 first one second should be half 60+10, 70
My blood pressure varies with my resting heart rate. I have a sleeping heart rate of 40-48 and may dip to 38 for short periods of time during sleep according to my Apple 3 watch. My blood pressure is over 170 at 43 bpm and 140 at 53 bpm, but my CAC score is 1011. I am 67 years old and train six days a week; swim, bike, and run. My HRV /Elite range is 50-55. What should I be concerned about, I am not on any medication?
Don't go to a regular doctor. You will be on at least 5 medications. Not because you need them, but because they want your money. Choose your doctor wisely. They almost killed me before I took control of my own health. If I listened to my doctor I would have been a dead vegan instead of a thriving carnivore.
People who do alot of endurance exercise often have high cac and the studies show that score is less risky for those people. It's high because exercise can cause inflammation. But what u really need is to make sure u have eliminated all other sources of inflammation. I have a similar situation. Cac scary like yours but i am thin and fit. Bp is normal. You should go keto if u aren't there already. It's low inflammation.
Less PUFAS more saturated fat from ruminants (beef, lamb) you might need to go full beef salt water for a bit, heal then add things back in to see how they affect you. Good luck!
I’ve listened to Paul a hundred times and every time I learn something new

Insulin for T2D, you mean, right?
Those with T1D or LADA need insulin.

If you eat nutrient dense food you can eat less. 80% lean ground beef is pretty cheap as are sardines. I do 2 meals a day, simple. It's not expensive
They adjusted thyroid labs too.
