Jazz is great music played by the best musicians. Jazz on a whistle is a blast. I think I'm going to try it.

I’ve been playing bebop on a Bb Susato for about 15 years.
Observations:
If you want to sit in with jazzers, get a Bb whistle, its easy keys (Bb, Eb, F) are the most common horn keys.
Pick tunes without weird modulations (e.g., Body and Soul, Bb to D and back is brutal on a Bb whistle).
Bebop needs insane half-holing technique. To get the bebop alterations (#5, b5, #9, b9) you must jump half-hole to half-hole. Ugh.
You don’t have to be insane to attempt this, but it helps.

I've always had the feedling that the theory and terminology, whilst helpful in communicating musical ideas in a more academic and/or teaching context, is more likely to hinder our natural flow of musicality. That is why I do not read sheet music or tab, and instead go by the ear. Playing along songs or backing tracks, and transcribing by ear is a great way to learn, I found.
Perhaps the 'beginner' position is the one we should strive to maintain...

There's need to be more videos like this outhere. In blues pop rock country bluegrass worship medieval native American and other styles. To share the idea that the fipple can do more than itm. Which is love by most people. I love that with all my heart.

Very relatable Stephanie! I do this too 😃 It definitely works for people like us who play by ear!
I haven't got a tin whistle yet to be able to test it out on that instrument, but is currently practicing improvisation on bass and a key thing recommended was learning the blues scales and minor pentatonic scales (as the latter essentially removes the notes from the diatonic scale that would sound "bad" [or would create a tritone, if you want to get technical] and thus make it easier to solo freely). One good thing about the G whistle is that it can also play in A minor, which pentatonic is a similar A-C-D-E-G, thus omitting the B, F and F#.
That's not to say you can't use those notes, however, as I hear more advanced musicians use the bebop scale by quickly flowing in-and-out of notes that sound dissonant to add a bit of tension and interest in their solo yet that's a bit further out for me, so I stick to pentatonics and chromatic approach notes. Oh, and a common tip for solos (especially bass, but all instruments really) is to avoid playing the root too much as it grounds the sound and potentially make it sound less interesting.
Anyway, while the jazz I've played in actual band performances was written (and were trombone parts on euphonium of all things, lol), the solos generally boiled down to playing a small selection of notes that sound good in very expressive ways, so your playing was pretty good!

I have got a book called 'Learning to Read Music', 3RD EDITION by Peter Nickol. It's paperback and costs £9.99 on Amazon. It's an excellent book that assumes no prior knowledge but takes you through at a manageable speed but yet, you feel real progress surprisingly quickly. He is an acclaimed teacher and author and I wish that I had found it years ago. Grab one you won't be disappointed. David.x

Sounds good, that is all required. You can play jazz on low B as well. I have musical degree, but who cares if you play in 1 scale. :) This is why I love whistle.
A bit of Tongue Roll there Nice.
That was damn good. I play almost fully chromatic on tin whistle and can improvise pretty well on a lot of jazz standards (not Giant Steps though). All I did was start expanding the keys I can play in using half holing and the technique of closing 2 or three holes below the open hole to flat that note. Eb on a D whistle is the hardest key (all alternate fingerings) but I can play the scale pretty quickly. I don't improvise in that key very well but for a passing chord I get by. I also practice augmented and diminished arpeggios and scales which come in handy on turnarounds. You did a damn good job of making a musical solo with all true notes on the whistle though. Sounded like Miles Davis haha!
Luckily, jazz is all about soul. Who needs theory!?
I think Jazz guitarists would greatly disagree with you, if you want to get more serious you will need theory. Rick Beato and Steve Stine have good theory videos on YT that are understandable

This was a really fun video :) Improvisation is what I'm all about so I've always loved Jazz music as well. Some of the Jazz tin whistle players I've heard are unbelievably talented, almost intimidatingly so haha :) This video helps push pass that and let people know it's all about having fun and enjoying yourself!

That bebop scale is tricky! I think the best phrase you can use is "e-f-f#-g", back and forth in creative ways :)
Another good one is to play around with 3rd and 6th holes covered, (you'll get the major pentatonic scale)with lots of bendings (notes g a b d e g):
Many jazz tunes are based on pentatonic scale with extra notes to spice up the flavour. In this case.. Try adding the Eflat with xoxxxo

@@CutiepieTinWhistle yeah! You'll love it. Should be in F minor, so an Eflat Whistle is needed. I think I'll build a low Eflat for that purpose :)

BTW Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk were jazz legends who were largely self-taught. So a lack of formal training isn't a barrier to success with jazz!

Aho Stephanie, It sounds like as far as musical knowledge goes we're at about the same level. Your playing ability is better than mine though. Sometime around the end of this week is my three year anniversary playing the Native American style flute. I have learned what I know from finger tableture and RUclips video tutorials, yours included and did I mention, since picking up the flute three years ago I haven't missed a single day playing it. It has been said that "you don't practice the N.A.F., you just play it". This is the way that seems to work best for me. The thought of "practice" is too regimental and takes all the fun out of it. Yes if I had some workable level of music knowledge I might get better quicker but at what cost. The knowledge will come but I'm not going to push it. Let's keep it fun.

I don't play every day, sometimes I don't play for weeks, and that's because I take requests. This mostly means I'm not playing music I'm interested in. If I played jazz tin whistle I'd play every second I had spare 🤣🤣
