I believe Catherine is lesbian, and is actually in love with Madeline.
By the emphasis on her being a virgin, the questioning by Robert on if she even likes guys, the way she’s always holding onto Madeline, and of course her jealousy of Madeline's relationship with Paul.

Swedish government financed this film and was upset when Godard gave half of the money to his buddy Jean Eustache.

Quite an interesting bit of history, as contentious as Godard's move was as payment for what the Swedish government helped him accomplish.
