I met Reg at my Great Aunt's ninety-fifth birthday party at Denville Hall - a delightful man in every aspect. That great Aunt was Doris Hare - she played the Mother character in On The Buses. Happier, simpler days, when people weren't so stuffy or concerned about Political Correctness - a far remove from what is deemed to represent humour today..
Did your aunt Doris Hare have a sister, I remember when I was about 8 or 9 going to Bournemouth and we stayed in my uncle Bert's place for 2 weeks, the first week Doris Hare and another lady were there not sure if she was on holiday or staying there while performing in one of the shows, I think a few performers stayed there, she was a very nice lady and the lady she was with was a similar age but she could have been a fellow performer, it was in the 70's.
Good evening, Errin. That other lady may well have been my Grandmother, Molly; in fact, there were four sisters & one brother: Doris, Molly, Elizabeth (Betty), Winifred (Winnie), & coincidentally, Bertie. All were Thespians, tho' Doris was the most well known; all knew Noel Coward, & many other actors/actresses from the 1920's to present day. My Mother knew many in the acting fraternity, almost by default. Molly lived with us, & Winnie & Betty were spinsters living together, finally settling in Chichester - they were my two eccentric Great Aunts; all long gone, now. I hope that satisfies your curiosity, Kindest regards, Andrew🙂
@@andrewtongue7084 Hi Andrew, thank you so much for answering, even though I was only young from memory I had a feeling they were more like sisters, I remember them sitting either side the fireplace in arm chairs chatting to me. At the time I did not know she was famous, but when we got home, she was on the telly and my parents pointed her out to me, whenever I see your great aunt in anything now it takes me straight back to that holiday. Many thanks 🥰
Errin, I think you & I are roughly the same age - I was born in 1964 - again, coincidentally, on 1st March, so I share Doris' birth date too. I suppose, for myself, I've never considered that a member of my family would be deemed well known or "famous" - as a child & into my teens, then adulthood, it was more an understated fact; the word 'celebrity' was not really on anyone's radar back in the day, & hence, not so much fuss was made of it. A better vanished time, methinks....do take care, Andrew 🙂
@@andrewtongue7084 One of the most remarkable thing about Doris, was her voice! She had a DREADFUL voice as "Mum" in OTB, but in real life, her voice was actually quite posh. One of those "bloody hell" moments! lolol.
Yes, days on end with no electricity. Eating broken down ice cream cones with evaporated milk and hot water for breakfast. Weighed down with twenty blankets in winter . Only one heating source, a fire in the front room. Never knew any difference, never batted an eyelid. Never would go back to that now.
@@DavoInMelbourne I don't think she was that ugly. It was more her personality, the way she dressed, expressed herself, the way she irritated (unintentionally) Arthur. And it wouldn't have been that funny without Arthur. You wondered why they were married if they irritated each other for the smallest matters.
Reg will live on forever because of his role as Stan Butler. What both he and Jack got up to was just brilliant. I cry with laughter every time I watch the films and the TV series of On the buses.
I saw in a documentary that Stephen said he based his character on an overbearing army Sargeant (comedian Jimmy Edwards had the same problem in the RAF with a Corporal who was always pulling rank with his "stripes"!)
This nice man was identical to my own dad, n wen he came on tv we all smiled n mam sed I see you're dad's on tv then again. N smiled. He really looked his double, n wen our own dad left me mam. Oh yes a fine actor loved him in the film and more and love watching the films on dvd all the time He found his special place in are heart long live watch and enjoying His work.
I grew up watching On the Buses and loved the series and films. Reg also starred in The Great St Trinians Train Robbery with Frankie Howerd. Brilliant film.
The Knicker snatcher vignette in one of the Hammer On the Buses films is superb, still funny today. It was a great cast and crew on the TV and film productions.
Our Reg, what a great all round entertainer, as an avid fan from The Rag Trade and On The Buses he was also a great pianist. He’s 92 years he gave us so much fun and laughter from to and films to LP’s and many films. Good bless you Reg and “Thank you” 11/10/2024 🇬🇧

My parents met in the 60's. My father was a bus driver and my mother a clippy. She asked him out to the works Xmas do and he accepted as he was new and didn't know anybody. They both used to love watching On The Buses. Even though it's aged it's nice to go back to times that we look back on fondly.
Reg's ability as a comedian and actor gave me a lot of joy in the 60's and 70's and after that when I was lucky enough to catch a replay.. He is fondly remembered.
"I hate you Butler..." from Stephen Lewis as the Inspector. Reg Varney, a gentleman with an outgoing personality loved by all. Thanks for the memories Reg.
Reg varney did a show in Sydney in one of the clubs he was so great he was a wonderful entertainer I have a lot of great memories of the night it was one of the best
I hope Reg Varny and "On the Buses" are remembered for ever. The whole cast were brilliant in there parts. This was in the days when people could speak their minds.
I just looked him up on the IMDb app & it said his daughter has 1 acting credit for the on the buses movie from 1971 where she played the character "Mavis".
She was the one who called Blakey 'a knicker snatcher' at a bus stop while Butler collected the wrong washing bag from the local launderette across the road and Blakey caught sight and snatched it of him and planned to report and prosecute him but thankfully it backfired. And Wendy Richard starred along side her in this scene.
I've been reading the comments, because as an American I don't really know much about British television. However, as hard as it is to believe, I do know who Wendy Richards is. My knowledge of British tv, comes from the Avenger's , Benny Hill, and Are you Being Served. Hence my knowledge of Wendy Richards. I shall try to find episodes of On The Bus, to continue my education. Take care, all.
Everyone over the age of 40 will have seen on the Buses as it been repeated constantly since it finished. Reg Varney actually passed his PSV so was actually qualified to drive buses & coaches for his role as Reg. Everyone that has seen the episodes & 3 films loves on the Buses. The actor who played Blakey has passed away within the last year or so.
reg back in the day in Australia nsw use to visit our indian restaurant in bondi junction when in Australia very nice man truely maybe this was in late 70s

Nostalga. I am surprised an American knows so much on shows like this, From a time back when travelling continents was not so much. But well done for such a good job representing the show.
OTB was a great ensemble show with each cast member talented in their own right, but it is sad to reflect that all the main cast are now gone RIP to all 💎
How can Reg Varney's talents not be recognised today? One trivial point: My beloved Watford Football Club signed a player called David Butler. Three guesses how he was heckled!
Reg, before he could start filming on the buses was required to take a PCV (passenger carrying vehicle) license. This was because he was required to drive a bus on the UK road while filming. It was also required because passengers were on the bus while he was driving.
On The Buses is as much social commentary as it is comedy. Reg Varney was playing a much younger man and yet he was totally believable (as was Bob Grant as Jack). A true ensemble cast who brought joy to so many. I do wish, however, that the makers of this mini bio wouldn't put up mismatched or completely irrelevant photos along with the commentary.
A lovely man. He brought happiness to many people in need of laughter. May he rest in peace
That sums it up perfectly.
Just revisited OTBs series and they still have my wife and I in stitches. A true comic. RIP Reg....

I'm Dutch and saw On the Buses in the seventies. Loved it! Especially Arthur and Olive who IMO should've had a series of their own.
Agreed mate. Olive (Anna Karen) was gorgeous in real life; she must have had to spend hours in makeup for them to make her look that ugly 😀
