Edit: I still prefer ADV Gendo and Asuka. There's just something nicely deep and at times unnerving about them. Also, not a fan of the occasional Netflix script's literalness (the nicely put Third Child > the off-putting singular term Third Children, for one).

The Japanese voices are without a doubt the best. After all, not just anyone gets to top Megumi Hayashibara, the Queen of voice acting in terms of performance. Her voice is what made the whole "emotionless" trope, and Rei's overwhelming popularity as a result.
Same thing with Mari, the English voices just doesn't have that cat-like playfulness that Maaya does.
In the end, this is a cultural difference. The Japanese just have a natural homefield advantage to convey the intended emotions in their native language, something that's difficult to do in a foreign language, even if it's something universal like English.

Here's my thoughts on each character, English obviously. This is ordered from favourite to least favourite.
Shinji: Spike Spencer is my pick. Casey Mongillo is my least favourite of the recasts on Netflix, as they made Shinji sound too effeminate. Say what you will about Shinji being voiced by Megumi Ogata in Japanese, but at least she made him sound like a boy. Besides, Casey has nothing on Spike's more natural deliveries, especially in Rebuild.
Asuka: Tiffany Grant, without any question. Especially in the scene you've chosen here. Stephanie McKeon just doesn't have the same energy, and some of her lines really made me raise an eyebrow. It might be an unpopular opinion as well, but I think Stephanie McKeon sounded a touch too young as well, especially for a character who wants to be older than she actually is.
Rei: Amanda Winn-Lee is my favourite, having this whisper to her tone that really just works. She's also great in the Amazon Rebuild Dubs, where she gets to play the character a bit more normal in 1.11 and 2.22. Brina Palencia is also a great Rei, swiftly taking the reigns from Winn-Lee in Funi's Rebuild Dubs. She can play both sides of Rei very well. Ryan Bartley is my least favourite, but that doesn't mean I dislike her, unlike the other two main pilots. Bartley has a much more normal tone for the character though, which is my main criticism. I don't feel that there's anything abnormal about the character with Bartley as the voice. Again, not bad, I quite liked it, but didn't compare to the previous two voices.
Misato: Allison Keith, and I disagree with your choice of scene here, Allison was still having a rough time getting into character at this point, and the scene choice is possibly one of her worst when it comes to delivery. A better choice would've probably been the equivalent scene in Rebuild (Funi preferable) or a bit of her final monologue in EoE. Allison hits every part of the character right. The seriousness, the fun-loving goofy side, and the part that falls apart due to her past. Carrie Keranen is fine in the role, but misses a lot of the goofy side, largely due to dialogue.
Mari: Trina Nishimura just killed it from her very first scene in 2.22. She is fantastic as Mari. Deneen Melody is also a great Mari, but never hits that same amount of energy compared to Nishimura, weakening a lot of her scenes in comparison.
Kaworu: Jerry Jewell is my favourite, with some great lines, a sense of unease, but also friendliness. Everything just works with his Kaworu. Daman Mills is my next pick, coming very close to Jewell but just barely missing. Mainly down to lines, but I think Mills voice was a little bit less suited to the role. Jewell's voice sounded more natural to me. Clifford Chapin takes the next spot, the script hates Kaworu, but he has ssome great deliveries. A highlight for me from the VSI Dub. Greg Ayres sits at about the same level. Young sounding, pretty much a lot of the same that I like in Jewell, just with a far better script. Aaron Krohn sits after him, not far behind, doing a great job in EoE and Death. Finally there's Kyle Sturdivant, far and away the weakest, with awkward line deliveries and not even being able to hum Ode to Joy right.
Gendo: Tristan MacAvery has this tone that just works. Able to take every line and absolutely kill every delivery. He's fantastic. John Swasey was trying to imitate MacAvery a bit too hard on the DC Dubs, but settles into his own much better during Rebuild, he comes closes to Fumihiko I think. Ray Chase finishes it off, great delivery, if sounding a bit younger than necessary, and not really anything like Japanese. He also has some really weird lines...
Ritsuko: Colleen Clinkenbeard hits every that I want in an English Ritsuko. Smooth, sexy, but serious as well. It's just perfect. Second would probably be Mary Faber. Also great, just maybe a touch underneath what I want to see in Ritsuko. Sue Ulu takes third, with some fantastic deliveries, but also some awkward ones. I love her changes in tone depending on the situation though. Erica Lindbeck is the weakest, with no real sense of variance in tone throughout the entire runtime, leaving me disappointed at various points.
Kaji: J Michael Tatum is the best in English imo. Coming closest to Koichi Yamadera. Next is Aaron Krohn, who is such a joy to listen to, it would've been cool to see him return in Rebuild but he didn't. I've warmed up to Greg Chun as time has passed but I still don't think he's the better than Krohn. Finally there's Sean Burgos. I have no idea what happened here. Weakest English Kaji by far. The voice simply doesn't fit at all.
Fuyutsuki: Guil Lunde is the best one, with Michael Ross specifically in the Amazon Dub taking second. Kent Williams and JP Karliak take second together, as both sound just too much like Gendo to me. Finally, Michael Ross specifically in EoE. Monotone deliveries all around. So glad he was able to drastically improve his performance for Rebuild.
Toji: Johnny Yong Bosch is the best, with a very nice tone for the character. Fits exactly what I want in an English Toji. Justin Cook is second, with Brett Weaver sitting in third. Both work well, nothing really else to say. The other two ADV guys sit at the end. Why did Toji need to go through three voices in the ADV Dub?
Hikari: Leah Clark takes my top pick, with Kimberly Yates in second (Not specifically for her single line in Death, but because of Amazon Rebuild). As for Abby Trot and Carol Amerson, they're both about the same. I feel that Abby Trot does a better serious class rep while Carol Amerson is better in the more caring, and gushing about Toji parts. None of them I feel are outright bad though.
Kensuke: Alejandro Saab is my favourite, exactly what I'd like to see in Kensuke. As for Second, tie between Kurt Stoll and Ben Diskin, both are great, with Stoll having a better fitting voice and Diskin having better delivery. Greg Ayres was an interesting choice for Kensuke, and he's good, just not really at the same level as the rest of them.
That's my thoughts for those above. For those who want to hear my thoughts on the Bridge Bunnies, let me know.

    • @CoolJosh2002
      @CoolJosh2002 2 года назад +4

I'll throw in my thoughts on the Bridge Bunnies as well, why not. (Only three months after the fact but hey, why not!)
Maya: I love pretty much all her English voices, though I tend to lean more towards the mixture of a feminine tone with a deeper voice for the character, it's one of the things I think the dubs did better than Japanese, as with Maya's look it's a tone that really suits her. With that being said, Caitlin Glass (Funimation), Amy Seeley (Manga, Amazon) and Monica Rial (ADV DC) all sit up the top. I can't really pick one over the other here. Seeley's works best coming of ADV's dub with a very nice deep tone that many wouldn't realise is a recast. She overacts a bit in EoE but she's generally the best of the recasts there. She improves on her previous performace in Amazon's Rebuild dub, albeit she has some very badly written lines there. Caitlin Glass was fantastic in Funimation's Rebuild dubs, and definitely had much better lines to deal with. Monica Rial is a surprise I'm sure, she goes for a more soft-spoken tone, which still works really well. Kendra Benham (ADV), the original English Maya sits next. She has some extremely awful deliveries in the first few episodes (ESPECIALLY Episode 2) but improves very quickly as well, able to launch out the techno babble very well. Finally, Christine Marie Cabanos (VSI) from the VSI redub comes last for me. It's fine, but considering the idea was completely different to previous English Maya's, it just doesn't sit right with me.
Hyuga: Mike McFarland (Funimation) managed to take what Matt Greenfield had already done and improve upon it. He is fantastic, and easily the definitive English Hyuga. Next is as mentioned, Matt Greenfield (ADV, or Brian Grandvelt for those in the know ;)) starts off rough, gets better over time, tone suits the character, pretty much all the same things as Kendra Benham as Maya. Then we have Joe Fria (Amazon) in third for me. Good on him for honouring the traidition of the ADR director voicing Hyuga. He's also quite good, if a bit younger sounding, which makes going from Funi's 3.33 dub to the 3.0+1.01 dub a bit iffy, but he's a great Hyuga. Keith Burgess (Manga) was an interesting choice. His line delivery was very interesting to listen to, and not necessarily bad. The voice? Does not suit the character in any way shape or form. Finally Daniel MK Cohen (VSI). Most stereotypical nerd voice I have ever heard. I hate it.
Aoba: They're all fine. None of them really stood out to me besides Jason C Lee (ADV, Manga, Amazon), purely because he's done it the most. Vic Mignogna (ADV DC), Phil Parsons (Funimation), and Billy Kametz (VSI). They're all fine, they're all Aoba. Nothing else really to say here.

The performances by the actors in the ADV dub are lacking emotional resonance and nuance. It is hard to take their performances seriously.
The Netflix dub sounds much better in comparison. The actors convey the more serious moments in the show with more subtlety and intensity when it's warranted.
But, the Japanese original is by far the best. There's nothing lost or changed in translation, and the actors are in a masterclass of their own in comparison to any other dub. Their performances sound very nuanced and genuine, and carry the emotional depth the other dubs are lacking.

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

Aside from all the usual issues Khara's forced upon these dubs since 3.0, the Amazon dubs for 1.0-3.0 were rushed, with only a few months of time to finish all three films. My guess is that Amazon couldn't secure a deal with Funimation for their dubs of the first three movies and had to rush out some new dubs. That way, everything would be in one place when the fourth movie, 3.0 + 1.0, premiered on their streaming service.

@@dankwaifu2093 Khara demanded the films be redubbed. It's the same thing that happened with Netflix, Amazon could have gotten Funimation's version if they wanted it, but Khara didn't. The scripts were written and provided by Khara and almost no changes were allowed to be made (these scripts are almost 1:1 translations of the Japanese dialogue, they are NOT proper dub scripts, you'll notice if you pay attention they're so badly organized that some lines have been sped up in post to fit, it's horrible). Dubbing brothers had like 2 months to work on all four films and everything was recorded remotely using new software. it's not a surprise they turned out badly. Some other countries were only given 3 weeks to record all four, I'm not joking, I know someone who worked on the French dub

Its extremely hard to put my nostalgia for the ADV dub to one side, and accurately judge these actors. Renting the VHS from your local blockbuster really does make Fly Me To The Moon hit different...
Overall Netflix did a good job and the different dubs trade blows at times, but I really think the superior version has to be the original English by ADV. Eva is possibly the only anime where the original English cast is better than the Japanese.
Tiffany Grant as Asuka in particular is the absolute GOAT, nobody comes close. Kurt Stoll as Kensuke is also leagues above the others. Spike Spencer cops a lot of flak, and Casey did indeed do a great job as Shinji. Spencer however really makes Shinji believable as the little whiny bitch that he is, and his chemistry with Allison Keith is perfect. Shinji and Misato's relationship is one of the most important in the series and together they really make you empathise.
It's a real shame that more people won't hear the best version of Eva thanks to Netflix.
