Do you know you can surf the internet on the Amazon Echo Show 5. Although it's not in reach like other things on the Echo Show 5, you have access to two browser apps. Your choice of current browsers is Silk or Firefox, guess which one has more to offer?

So glad I searched for this and found your video! I’ve been looking for a way to display a recipe on something other than my phone. Never even heard of Silk, either, and we’ve had Alexa devices since they first came out. What’s interesting is I couldn’t find the dash - character on any of the letter, number, or symbol keyboards and completely missed the big ‘ole microphone icon 🤦🏼♀️ until I watched more of the video so I wasn’t sure if I could even get to the recipe site I needed. Thank you!!

Great instruction and demo - you keep is framed, not a lot of cuts and the way to get there.

Viewing bookmarked web pages is really the only thing I want an Echo Show for. If it weren't for your thorough overview (which shows the Show 5 is no good for that), I might have wasted my money. So kudos and thanks!

Heh, for a moment I was wondering why it muted him saying Alexa (and instead showing the text), then it suddenly clicked. Of course, you don't want to be setting off people's Echo devices. I remember an Xbox One commercial with Aaron Paul giving the console voice commands, and people were complaining because their own consoles were responding to it. :P
Yeah, that's why. Trying to reduce triggering all those Echo devices out there.

Would you recommend the echo model for streaming Instagram videos (workouts) or workout videos from a website?

Thanks a lot for the review. Is it possible to disable the browser timeout? If you are looking to a video and you do not touch the Echo show, this times out after 3-5mins and exit to the main home page with the clock.
I wish have a solution for that, but it happens to me & other people. Don't think the Silk browser was design to play videos

I find it frustrating that you can’t access Netflix, even through the browser. I wonder if this is because they see it as direct competition to Prime Video? My Echo Show lives in the kitchen & the only thing I use the browser for is to either watch You Tube for recipes or watching BBC iplayer.
Tina, that is a good question but I don't think is a direct competition because they have the Netflix App on the Firestick, but it would be nice to have that app on the Echo Show. Let's hope it will show up on those devices in the future.

thanks for the info..one question...if i go to a web site that has a video chat feature (not skype)...can I video chat if the camera and mic are enabled?

For you techies out there, do you recommend the silk browser or the Firefox browser? I've always used Firefox but after watching this it seems the Silk browser has more options. Thanks in advance!
Silk is Amazon default browser for the Echo Shows and Fire TV devices, for the Echo Show I've been using both and I'm leaning more towards Firefox. I have a video coming explaining.

Ummm so your saying that you can’t download app on there 😭😭 I don’t have a phone so on my birthday I only had $75 so I bought this so it could work as a device so I can’t even call people on there because I don’t have a phone so I can’t download the Amazon Alexa app

Thanks. This was just what I needed. Unfortunately browsing is clumsy - hope Amazon can fix it to make it easier to use because I enjoy the 5 and 8.

No you can’t just add your own apps and you cannot go to the Google play store from this device either

Just recently bought an Echo Show 5 and I don't see anywhere in the settings for web options. Did they remove this option from the devices?

@@vicki17antonia I was able to figure it out. You have to go into the Alexa app and find your device and make sure Free Time is disabled.

Yes it is, all the same on Show 5, Show 8 & Show
Does the google nest hub have any of that?
The Home Hub doesn’t have a browser app. However, searching for an image often leads to results that then link to third-party websites like Wikipedia. Follow that link, and you are able to browse pretty much the entire online encyclopedia - with one notable exception: Home Hub doesn’t offer any on-screen keyboard, and there’s no option to dictate text input. This means that you won’t be able to search for anything. (Variety’s Janko Rottgers). To pull up the browser, simply use “OK Google”
Echo Show 5 minute timeout on web pages, how can i fix it?
I have that problem too on some websites, I wish I had the answer. It's something Amazon has to fix on their end.

You can forget that happening, this is a very basic browser, for light browsing

I wouldn't recommend it - it would be better on the Fire HD Tablets

How hard is it to surf the net on such a small screen? Just curious.
It's not that great of user experience, because you can't constantly hold it in your hand like a phone. But it's there if you need it.
