  • 2017 NEA Jazz Master and legendary Hammond organist Dr. Lonnie Smith plays the new Hammond XK5 Traditional Pro System at the 2016 Summer NAMM show.
    More information about the XK5: www.hammondorga...
    Recorded through a Leslie 3300W with two Audio Technica ATM450 condenser mics on the top rotor, an Audio Technica ATM25 on the bottom rotor, and a feed from the 3300W's sub output into a Steinberg UR44 connected to an iPad mini running Steinberg's Cubasis amp.
    Minimal processing (some reverb and light limiting).
    UPDATE Sept 29, 2021: The great Dr. Lonnie Smith has made his transition. I'd like to just say one thing about this video... the XK5 was a new product at the time and had yet to be fully tweaked. So yes, the keyclick is a bit egregious and the tone isn't just like a vintage Hammond. It is much better now, since the product has been fully realized.
    But none of that matters. Listen to what the maestro is playing. This is a masterclass in jazz organ, a gift to you from him. Study this. When you understand it, you will understand the man, my friend, the beautiful soul that was Dr. Lonnie Smith. You will understand the history and strength and passion in this music. The beauty and power. Rest In Peace, master. We love and thank you for your music.

      @ThomasEJones-oz9il-Sir, you're confusing Dr. Lonnie Smith(whom this is on the organ) with Dr Lonnie Liston Smith(who plays piano, Synthesizer, and keyboards) both are Jazz but Dr Lonnie Smith is known for his Organ Genius whereas Dr Lonnie Liston Smith is known for being one of the early pioneers of what would later be known as Quiet storm/Jazz Fusion/smooth Jazz

    Always great to hear the Doctor, thanks for this post.
    Clicking is bad in this intimate setting. MayB Hammond should continue R&D & place tiny rubber/felt pads under each key. Great Hammond sound, but on a stage with a group & PA, the clicking would not be heard over the other instruments

    They achieve that perc sound by carefully sampling and blending in corn chips with the primary tone! Kidding of course. I love the perc slide at 15:42 slowly over the keys played lightly to replicate say a soft sax sections glissing down in block chords. Really nice. The perc is probably sounding louder on headphones which pick up high frequencies from the accurate direct recording made here. But its really cool mechanical waterfall keyboard feature of the KX-5 which I think is an attractive musical option over plain midi keyboards that emulate this through other non mechanical methods. Nice engineering here Hammond. Its great to have a company interested in developing this for musicians to play.

      Not at all. Lonnie didn't spend any time tweaking the instrument. He just sat down and played. The keyclick was not as pronounced from where he was sitting. But if you or I or Lonnie or anyone else thinks it is too much or too little, it can be changed. That's all I'm saying.

    I'm no expert on the Hammond organ but I don't think I've ever heard the keys click that much. Is that supposed to be the percussion or is it supposed to be emulating something old Hammonds do after years of playing or one of those types of thing? It sounds, not so good to me but the playing is of course expert. Dr. Lonnie is Great. One of the best players of the instrument.

    That bass, though is more like a replication of an electric bass guitar, although, I am sure that Hammond XK5 is capable of replicating a pipe organ's bass (because you feel it more than you hear it here)! Now, with the way Dr. Lonnie Smith plays this, there is quite a bit more keyboard percussion (key click), than I like, but that's authentic jazz organ playing, that is for sure. He does play some pipe tones and changes rotor speeds while doing this, so the theater organ tremolo is featured well here. This organ is really good for jazz clubs, theaters, the ballpark or arena, and maybe even church (if a pipe organ isn't available)!

    • @mfb5642
      @mfb5642 8 лет назад

      There will never be a replacement for the sound of a pipe organ inside of a cathedral. Playing this through a PA system in a opera house is pretty damn good though.

    • @zachlafleur6651
      @zachlafleur6651 8 лет назад

      +Little Gator Farm Quite possibly, yes, a digital organ can get really close to the sound of an analog pipe organ (so close that many can't tell the difference), but when you compare analog acoustic instruments to digital and electronic ones, there are subtle differences.

    • @zachlafleur6651
      @zachlafleur6651 8 лет назад

      +Little Gator Farm I didn't realize that the NAMM exhibits are ever done inside an opera house, though? I would think that they would be at a big convention center in a major city or suburb of one? Also, a small to mid sized pipe organ in a Polish Cathedral (not a cathedral in the sense of being the seat of a bishop, but artistically and acoustically similar, only somewhat smaller, and often artistically superior to a real cathedral), compared to a similar pipe or even digital organ in a much simpler church does sound quite different as well! This video, though, is more toward those who enjoy jazz organ and its characteristic sound as contrasted to pipe organ, however, Dr. Lonnie Smith plays just about all sounds possible here!

    Cleaner sound than I'm used to hearing him have on a real B3.....the key click is a bit distracting....

      They know nothing about the old guys or the b3. I'm 70.out of Philly. These folks have no clue about who plays this organ. You would have to be raised around it. Two other names. Jimmy Smith and Joey d Francesco
