    Great video! It IS all about the roots! I too get really excited when I see a new root or roots developing. I makes me feel that I must be doing something right! They are such a great indicator of the orchid’s health. That is why I grow with LECA in glass containers with two holes at the top of a reservoir. SO I CAN WATCH THE ROOTS! So much fun! And I recently purchased cheap white nursery pots to act as a cover on my glass jars to restrict algae from taking hold. This has worked great for me this Summer with the orchids outside. Sadly, the Phals will probably be coming inside tomorrow. Always makes me sad. They are at the peak of their growing season with big fat juicy roots all over the place. Thanks, Nina, for all your help this year; I have learned so much from you. Have a great day, Nina! 😊

      Hi Barbara 😍💐 it is wonderful to see you again and I hope that you are doing well! I am watching the night temperatures every day now, and it feels cool (for me) but for the phals, I can still leave them outside to glamcamp. But yes, full on growth mode, and then to bring them inside is such a shame. I may have another 2 weeks, maybe 3.... depends. The summer bloomers, I am stretching them to stay out at night because, in actual fact, it is a little too cool for them already, but still 4º warmer than what they will have to tolerate during the months of Dec -March when indoors. So, trying to focus on the light levels they are receiving during the day as opposed to worrying about the 2º temps below their comfort zone 😑 its a fine balance, but I thnk light is super important. I cannot bring myself to do the indoor / outdoor shuffle with them yet. Thank YOU so much for all your support here this year, Barbara! You are so much appreciated!! I hope you had a fabulous weekend and a fabulous Monday to boot ❤️🌸

    I have the RuPaul song "Back to my roots" in my head. Not because the song is actually about plant roots, but the chorus is pretty spot on to your feelings about roots.
    "I'm going back, back, back to my roots,
    Where my love can be found, and my heart rings true.
    I'm going back, back, back to my roots,
    To the time and the place, coming back to you."
    OK, now that I've gotten that out of the way, you've certainly done more research on roots than anyone else and it is a shame that YT is not promoting you more because so many people could find this helpful. Understanding the roots and maintaining root health is where a lot of people fail. And hand and hand with that is light, because a plant that is getting adequate light is going to use more water through photosynthesis AND be able to grow a more robust root system.

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! The lyrics are truly spot on! The song, itself, I don't think I am familiar with... have to get my google out. Thank you for your feedback, Michael, and thank you so much for your vote of confidence. I am gutted about YT, sick of being in the black hole... if I was shopping orchids 80% of the time, then I suppose YT would find me, but seeing as I have some informative orchid videos, some nuggets of intel filling in the parrotting info videos on the orchid youtubes... there is no demand for these kinds of videos. Let's just all go shopping 😔 . Oh well, I am still going to put these videos out, even though they don't get any traction. I just find them important... eventually someone will find it and have a 💡 moment, help save an orchid or whatever, and based on that I will keep putting out these kinds of videos. I don't have to tell you how disappointed I am 🥹 you know that all too well! 🥹 but, even my blooms videos don't get any traction. I have been iced out of all the channels I have supported up to now, incl US channels,... and YT doesn't think that I have anything to say either. Disappointed beyond belief. 🥲 The 'experts' say, not to make videos that we as creators enjoy, but to do what the viewers want to see... well, I don't have the numbers to actually know what anyone wants to see, because, if I show blooms, there is no increase. If I show phals, no traction, repots, no tractions... you name it, I just don't have the traction. I have contacted some channels, because I have an idea that I want to do together with them. No reply... I just don't know why there is this atmosphere of 🙅🏼‍♀️ when it comes to 'dealing' with ninja orchids. I suppose this comment should not be out in the public either, but I want anyone reading this to know that, I just don't understand! 😔 anyway!! Know that I appreciate you! Your time! Your support and your friendship! Thank you, Michael, so very very much 🙏🏼 I say it! I mean it!! Every night when I finish what I need to do to be ready for the next day, I am just glad to have gotten through another day and hope that I wake up to a 'change'.... 🤞🏼 and that is where I am at, right now! Say hi to everyone and then just go upstairs and pretend today never happened. This video took me months to prepare, watching my roots, to document the phases I wanted to point out, then it took me 8 hours to edit. Same as my last Stories video. ... Just to let you know that, I am not 'throwing' videos together for the sake of posting daily, in case that is the impression I am leaving out there. If I had more time, my back log of ideas would not be piling up in bullet points and pages of documents where I keep adding to the commentary that I 'must not forget' when it comes time to film. Maybe I am the dumb one... clearly, I have to analyze myself... maybe I am the dumb one. I just don't get it! Anyway... thank you! 🙏🏼 thank you so so much for all you have done and do for me and my channel 🙏🏼❤️ hope your day was awesome! 🌸

    WOW! So much infor, about roots on Vandas. I suspected some things you spoke of, but you have added clear and "delightful" facts.Bumps indeed. I have witnessed many of the items you spoke of on my vanda which has doubled its roots and has increased in size because I have had it outside as much as possible. They are in great shape and active. Much to absorb(I mean me!). Thanks.

      Joseph 😍💐 thank you... for also watching this video 🙌🏼🙏🏼 I have Vanda root envy! 🥹🥹 mine are dehydrating, even though I see that they have put on some growth, but the past week, the leaves are getting wrinkled and I am concerned. I was misting mine a lot today... mucho wind on the patio. But yeah... I so hope that something is going to grow new, or else we are going to have some serious problems. 🥺 so happy to hear that your vanda is doing a great job on the root production 🙌🏼 really appreciate your positive feedback on the video, thank you! It was months in the making to make sure that I could document what I was going to point out in a timely manner by taking pictures. One of my most favorite two topics... roots and velamen 😅 🌸

    Throughout this video I kept thinking also of orchids which have very thin roots and are not so easy to observe as the fatter ones. I know everything surely works in the same way so I think I need to get out a strong magnifying glass to study the Oncidium type roots. Just as well I recently bought myself a good, bright torch for exactly that purpose. I must have known you were going to give me a perfect reason to put it to work. Thank you Nina for the in-depth study of a very important part of orchid growing. It’s helped me understand things more and certainly has me thinking.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

      HI Renate 😍💐 the thinner roots on orchids are not that difficult to observe when it comes to the length of the root tips, but when it comes to the bumps, that yes, that is a tough one 😅 but it works exactly the same way. However, if I had had the screen on thin roots, we would not have had much to look at 😆 really appreciate you watching, and your kind feedback, so... thank YOU! Wishing you a beautiful Sunday ❤️🌸

    Good afternoon! Very interesting video about orchid roots! Thanks a lot!
    Question. Some orchids have a dormant period. This is observed once a year in some orchids. How do orchid roots behave at this time? How are they able to absorb water? Is it necessary to reduce the amount of water for watering an orchid when the tips of the orchid are covered with velamen, i.e. stop growing? Would this be called the annual cycle of the dormant period of the orchid?
    Do you have any written publications on this topic? It is easier to understand text than a video in a foreign language, even with subtitles. Maybe you have links to articles about the behavior of orchid roots from other botanical authors?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

      HI!! 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and thank YOU so very much for being here, I really appreciate it 🤗 I translated your name and it came up with Stained Glass Windows 😍 I went to your channel and subscribed. Your work is beautiful!! I have taken a screen shot of your comment and will make a video, because that is a really good question. However, to answer your question here... orchid roots are still absorbing water and a very tiny amount of nutrients even if the orchid is dormant. You see, if they are in an environment out in nature, they still absorb water and some small amount of nutrients from dew, or humidity or both... if they are high enough in altitude where they are surrounded by clouds. Dormant orchids never go without water completely. The roots are not dormant, even if the rest of the orchid is. Even ground orchids that loose their foliage. Everything only slows down. When the tips of an orchid are covered with velamen, it still requires watering to a degree and it depends on which genus we are talking about. Dormant dendrobiums, they still absorb some water while the orchid is dormant, whereas, there are many orchids that will close the velamen, pause the root growth because they start the process of spiking, focussing on the blooming, then after blooming, they resume with root growth. Some orchids take a rest when it comes to root growth, because the conditions are not ideal, so they conserve energy, until conditions in the climate improve and then they resume root growth. So, there are several factors as to what makes an orchid close the velamen off. Velamen closing can be observed 2x / year in some orchids... one of the genus is Neofinetias or Vandas which I find is a great example. I do not have any written publications on this topic, no! I wish I could sit down and write my book 😅 I have a full concept for a book within a book, and I cannot find the time to get started. I so appreciate your comment, and questions, though. And I am sorry that the language poses a barrier. I hope that, with all the comments and questions that you may have after this one, I will be able to write things out and make it easier for you to read 👍🏼 I also do not have links to other articles, because my videos come from what I observe in my collection over the years. If I start reading articles, I find it dilutes the information that I can stand by based on what I see and learn from my orchids. I hope that this makes sense. I will make a video, based on your comment and will address everything I wrote here in that video... and maybe, with a little more thought, I can be more detailed. Thank you so very much for your interest in the information that I can provide, I so appreciate it, and once again... welcome 🤗🌸

    🦒💖🙋‍♀🙌No roots, no plants. But orchid roots, as epiphytic, have a very special meaning. I liked your approach and thank you for sharing all the information you collected by observation. The bumps make me feel not eficient enough, that is, when they are very obvious and numerous. Animal intervention, you say? Yes, that's me, alright 🤣My tuberculata has branching roots, too bad they are not more vigorous, thicker and longer but we are both working on it, or at least trying 😁This year I am noticing some roots with those looong growing tips which I hadn't not noticed in previous years. It either means I am better observer or maybe getting more mature as an orchid grower or it is the orchids getting more mature too 😅 Happy and productive saturday, amiga mia, enjoy your day 🥰😍😍😘

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

      FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin! The bumps are there to remind us that we should not be growing these orchids in our climate, and no matter how hard we try... it is not perfect for them to develop perfectly! It is not that you are not efficient 😘 my tuberculata does not branch... meanwhile it is potted up, but when I last repotted it, all the roots were single straight roots. So, you have found the exception 🤪 Thank you so much for watching, amiga mia! Really appreciate your support, on the daily, and your priceless friendship ❤️ hope your day was beautiful and I wish you the same for Sunday ❤️🌸

    Hi Nina, great information. I have a question. ( stupid question). Can an Orchid grow roots and work on spikes at the same time ? Or does it only have energy to do 1 task at a time? I’m talking about NoID Phals

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +7

      Hi Sheila 😍💐 yes.... some orchids can do all that all at the same time. Even some species as covered in my Seasonal Orchid Care video. However, it is not as common. It is more common for that all to take place in complex hybrids that have been bred for vigor. They are on the go, all the time 😅 Most species, will only do one thing at a time. Especially easy to observe in vanda falcata.... lots of root growth before spiking starts. Then the roots stop growing, the orchid blooms and boom...once the blooms fade, roots start to extend. So 'predictable'! At least there are some things we can predict in this fascinating hobby, right? 🤣🤣 No ID Phals can do all in one go as well, but not all will. It all depends on what was bred into them. So if you have one that does it, but another does not, then there is nothing wrong with the one that is not doing it. That is the variable I speak of when I mentioned my focus on species and primary hybrid orchids. Bring in a lot of breeding and these observations get variables upon variables upon variables. 😬 really appreciate you watching, Sheila! I hope that you had yourself a great Saturday ❤️🌸

My nodosa is putting out new roots and really needs a repot as she is jumping out of her nursery pot. @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +6

      🌸🥷🏼Trish San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good afternoon, 🌸🥷🏼Freundin! Hesitant because? You have new roots starting and a vigorous orchid... is it because of the time of year? If that is what is stopping you, then don't let it. Your grow conditions are steady and a repot because of the season, does not influence a repot because of your growing conditions. 👍🏼 If you have any other concerns, please let me know! I may be assuming wrong. Thank you so much for watching, Freundin! I hope that you are having a beautiful Saturday ❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids hallo Freundin… worries I will lose the “good roots” but now that you have reminded me of my growing environment (yes I forgot to take that into consideration 😂) I think 🤔 she will get that bigger house 🏡 after all 🔑. Thank you for settling my brain 🧠 on this one ☝🏼. Enjoy your Saturday. We are having a very gloomy day. High in mid 69sF, drizzle 🌧 and no sun ☀️. I was debating bringing the outside girls inside as temps last night and tonight are under 55, but then decided they would need to “grin and bear it” as the rest of the week will be mid 60sF low and high 70sF day. Hope I did the right thing…time will tell.
