- Is Anybody Out There? is a short film produced by Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation in collaboration with Wonder Media that explores the importance of a trusted adult and the courage it takes for a teenager to tell their story.

Always go to a person w a professional license. If possible, take someone w you who can verify that you did so.
Professionals who fail to report your abuse to legal authorities will be stripped of their professional licenses and have to fight to get them back.
In real life, if you go to a man for help about these things, they're more likely to take the male abuser's side than yours.
Be safe and either go to a woman or a licenced professional.

"I believe you" is one of the most important things you can say to a survivor when they tell you they've been abused. I wish someone had told me those words.

@VirtuallyABoy Everything you said in the very beginning made sense so far until you said abuse can be your fault. Two wrongs do NOT make a right and if you're being abused you should try to seek help or leave the situation, it's understandable to lash out in return but that doesn't make it the other person's fault, you still decided to hurt them back and that was on you.
Victim blaming is a big enough problem. People defending abusers will try to find the silliest reasons for defending the abuser and justifying their actions. It's not even their fault for ending up with an abusive person. People can seem really nice on the outside and only show their true colours later, and by that time you're more likely to think you can just put up with it. Abusers are very good at manipulating their victims into staying around them or being drawn to them in the first place.
Also I think it's quite contradictory you can say "abuse can be your fault" and "childhood abuse is not a justification." In both cases, abuser being abusive comes down to their choices, behaviours and actions. How, then, can you justify one but not the other?
You seem to hold a really strong victim blaming mindset what with trying to fault the victim for both being abused AND being around the "wrong" people. Even if you are the mastermind of seeing through manipulation yourself, the vast majority of people aren't. Abuse comes from people closest to you much of the time. You shouldn't be THIS concerned with trying to pin guilt on the victim or figuring out if they are a liar, this is the problem! This is the reason people don't believe us, if they have a mindset to be skeptical first and offer help later.
I was "blamed" for my assault by many for "giving mixed signals" due to me being so friendly with this guy, platonically, but explicitly making it clear countless timed that I was uninterested and uncomfortable with his advances. It's not my fault that I'm kind to people, and it's not my fault someone who was supposed to be a friend violated my trust and comfort. It took so long to have the courage to come out and tell people what happened to be, and being BLAMED and not believed after gathering up the strength to try to get help was the very breaking point that made the situation as traumatic as it was to me. You may think you're trying to "be fair" by trying to see "both sides of the coin" but really what you will accomplish is further traumatizing and stressing person who needs the help and support.
Damn, y’all really stepped your game up with this one. I like that the next day, she wears baggier clothes that cover up her whole body. That’s very realistic. Also that there’s a male teacher who’s shown to be fatherly and genuinely looks out for her, because not all older male figures are horrible predators, there are good men out there. I’ll be keeping an eye out for future MCU shorts.

Iv'e been through sexual abuse before, and seeing the way she was and how strong she was to confront the coach was amazing. Let this be a lesson taught for those who are still suffering to get help. Its never your fault.

This happened to me. Nobody believed me though. Not my friends, not even my own brother. The woman who did it is still out there, living her life, working with children, having a child of her own. And I'm just stuck here with all the memories and trauma of what she did to me. She gets to live her life. She gets to be happy. She gets to forget I ever existed, and I'm stuck here, fighting for my life every day because of her. Thinking about what she did to me. Every. Fucking. Day.
Update: Thank you all so much for your replies, they mean a lot. I recently worked up the courage to talk to my therapist about what happened. As a mandated reporter she was required to alert child welfare services and both my parents. An investigation is underway right now, and hopefully the woman will never hurt anyone like she hurt me ever again.
I'm so sorry, I know how you feel. I had an older guy do this to me, I was like in 3rd grade he was a 6th grader, he touched my (You know what) while I was walking in front of him. He threatened me not to tell anyone, and I still have horrible memories now. Your not alone, @Project Hope Sandwich

@@ReniTube It's not that easy. I have no concrete evidence. My family can't afford a lawyer, nor can they handle the stress of a lawsuit. I don't think even I could handle it. I want to forget she exists, forget what she did, forget everything. I can't do it to my family and I don't think I can do it to myself.
I like how realistic these characters are (unlike the cheesy videos schools show you) and how educational they can be.The animation is also amazing as usual,keep up the great work guys.I hope you continue with more of these animations and that you guys get more recognition.

I think the visuals really just slaps the idea of loneliness from the closing door to the visual metaphor of space although the main idea is about sexual abuse it can be applied to a lot of themes such as depression, anxiety, wrongfulness, etc. Seriously a film everyone in one way or another relate to.
O laughed during one of them because the way they portrayed emotions was so unrealitic
We needed these videos back then. No one took the "bad touch" videos seriously. These are perfect executions that any and all ages can take something from. Thank you so much.

The symbolism in these videos is so clever like in "are you ok?" The purple liquid symbolised toxicity and anxiety and in this the suit is used to show how she is struggling to reach out its simply amazing writing

I just have such a strong appreciation for the fact that the teacher didn’t touch her in his listening to and comforting her. He understands the boundary and the fact that it would probably make her feel unsafe. Absolutely beautiful film, thank you.

I am a sexual abuse survivor. I love the space suit metaphor because I remember how isolating it was to be locked into that place of silence and fear. Telling someone is scary, but when you do, you'll get your life back. Keep telling until someone believes you.

He was invalidating that she just did. It felt useless as she didn't and I think it played a big part in the story, the "Is anybody out there?" is her reaching out two times and not felt seen

I love the astronaut metaphor. A lot of people will instinctively start to disconnect themselves from reality in order to deal with trauma, and if left unchecked, it becomes a habit; you learn to play dead to the world whenever it attacks you.

At the age of 6 to 16, I was sexually abused. And, I am fighting with Major Depressive Disorder. It took years to back in asusal life. But, when I see such kind of incidents happening with others, my soul just shakes in fear, regret, disgust, and anger.
Why such kind of monsters still in this world?

i felt genuine anxiety and panic whenever the coach was on screen, you guys are excellent at what you do.
I knew from the beginning he was gonna be the predator the minute I saw him show up.
I don’t have trauma regarding SA, but I would be dead lying if I said I didn’t feel scared out of my mind whenever coach appeared in scene. took me some strength to continue the video

Even though its a still in a credits its nice to see the abuser get punishment. Like he was such a sleeze ball by trying to keep her from quiet or make her feel bad when she asked him to stop touching her. He knows what he is doing is wrong but in cases like this the abuser tend to not care unless they get in trouble for it.
Exactly. What made me think is it wasn't exactly sexual assault (the video shows her being touched one time and tbh if she had been touched before we would see her feel uneasy next to him and not get close to him like in the first scene. So it was the first time.) But the texting, the gifts, the treating her differently made her uncomfortable so this is an ongoing abuse. It's harder to feel safe when you know it didn't just happen once, but keeps going. You feel trapped, with no hope, scared to return there.
You don't know if it's ever going to stop if you can't remember anymore how it happened.
Her reaction is totally reasonable.
This video was so touching. I love the young girl’s fantasy of going into space, it is the great escape from reality because of the abuse. Even though the incident was very hurtful she thought she could escape by floating up in space but I love the way the teacher caught her tow rope and pulled her back in. Very, very moving. I pray that all of the teachers, administrator’s and counselors watch this and also watch out for signs of abuse.
And also, perhaps ‘space’ being the symbol for dissociation! Completely going dark from her surroundings and, well, dissociating herself from it. Yaknow?
I don’t like commenting but I just really want to communicate to this team how much you mean to me. This is so educational and well made, and there is no video you’ve made that haven’t made me cried. Every time I feel alone about what happened to me, I come here, and I feel like someone actually listens to me and understands that it wasn’t my fault, that I was scared, that it actually happened. Thank you for making this project, there is so much people who appreaciate all the work you’ve done.

A child is never at fault for what terrible people do to them child abuse is real and it hurts anyone it's good that the little girl got justice for what that nasty guy did to her and it's always wise for parents to talk to there children about who should touch u and who shouldn't by this way it will make it easier on the child to talk to anyone about what they go through especially there parents once they are willing to listen
yes. since i was 6 years old, my mom would always tell me "no one touch you, if they make you feel uncomfortable, tell me".

When I told someone a teacher had touched me they accused me of lying. They were more concerned about the teacher's reputation than my safety. It sucked.
Honestly, both those people at that school and those so called parents sound like ignorant, abusive hypocrites!! I am SO GLAD we have these kinds of people who actually show abuse realisticly and not in a stupid and in a wrong way. These kinds of videos help spread awareness of the potential danger many kids and even adults face. And I'm glad they do it for ALL genders. Not just females. Since many people think that only females get sexually or badly abused. When in reality EVERYONE could possibly be abused. No matter what gender, race or whatever.

Going through emotional, sexual, and physical abuse growing up, i can feel how heart wrenching and isolated that girl is. When I came out about a single ounce to the only other guardian I have, they blamed me for not telling sooner and I winded up losing trust in everyone except my younger siblings. The family I had would never do anything about the bullying we’ve faced, because they enjoyed it or were too weak to help out. Now I try my best to help them and others, no one deserves this

I also was sexually abused when I was 10 by someone I considered my uncle, a couple days before my 11th birthday. And the isolation, the sheer panic and pain of being that alone, I'd wish on absolutely no one. It literally feels like your mouth is sewn shut.

The use of metaphors this channel uses and puts into animation is just amazing. The previous one about cyberbullying, 'Are You OK?' now this?! A masterpiece~!
It’s great to see another video from this channel, The deep emotions that this girl is just, no pun intended, breathtaking. The emotions that a victim goes through like this is really realistic. And once again it never hurts to speak up to people who hurt you. We live in a crazy world, but there are people out there who exist to help you. I just always know that these kinds of things is never ever you’re fault
Actually, in a lot of cases, it's more likely to hurt. Especially if they're doing it consciously. If someone accidentally hurts you, then talking to them can be good. But even in this case, he used the opportunity to gaslight her, to make her think she was crazy for ever feeling like something was wrong. That's hurting her right there. That's shutting her down, making her think she can't tell anyone, because she's probably reading into it too much. She's probably making a big deal out of nothing. And, worse yet, that even if she does tell someone, who does believe her, that nothing can happen because they'll trust his word over hers. If it wasn't for the teacher reaching past the barrier and bringing her back down to earth, she probably would never have reached out, and largely because she tried talking to the coach and he gaslit her.
And to add to that, he also could have used the opportunity to threaten her, or to do something worse. He could have shut the door and literally hurt her, or even more extremes. And if they were outside the school, he probably would have tried something. He could have more deliberately said no one will believe you, said you're crazy, anything. There are even people who'll kill their victims if they see signs of resistance like that. I don't think he, specifically, is that kind, but you can't always tell.
TL;DR: Yes, speaking up to the abuser CAN actually hurt you, in any number of ways. It's better to find someone you feel safe with, and have them come with you, at the very least.
I love what this channel stands for, and these short films are good to watch! I pray that anybody who has gone through something like this, that they find this channel resourceful.

Maybe one day we can live in a world, where kids can be kids, and we don't have to deal with this kinda thing. I hope this video raises awareness and that kids get he help they need, if anyone reading this is going through that, someone, somewhere will believe you. Keep your head up.
Oh my gosh I was shedding tears by the end of it. It portrays dissociation so accurately with the space analogy. I was sexually assaulted in high school and I remember how my psychiatrist was the first person I told about the incident that believed me and didn't blame me. Seeing her teacher do that for her brought back so many feelings 😭

@@azarath5688 teachers are mandated reporters. They'll tell CPS anyways. CPS isn't always the "terrible" organization it's made out to be, and it can actually be a valuable resource sometimes. Of course, that's not to say it doesnt have its shortcomings
This is so powerful! Mari is so strong. It's so very sad that she had to go through that horrible experience at all though. I literally cheered when that coach got arrested. I like to see that the teacher was so caring towards Mari (he was her lifeline in this situation!) and trusted her immediately.
Short stories like these need to be considered for an academy award, their message is so powerful!!
this is so sad, never forget that God is here for us too. He helps give us courage for things like these and we can pray for people who seem to be consumed in their flesh. we are all wicked in heart but Christ helps us become more like Him every day when we abide in Him. God is comfort, God is safety, God is freedom.

I am in tears. My great uncle touched me AND my older sister when we were just small kids. Idk about my younger sister but I wouldn’t doubt it. I was around 8-10 and that just from what I can remember. I’m 14 now she is 16. and We are so scared to tell anyone. I’m afraid if I do I will ruin everything, and cause drama in my family. Idk what to do. My dad saw him messaging my shoulders at family dinner, and he asked me about it. I wanted to spill my guts right then and there. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
I’m so sorry you are going through this kind of abuse I’m not that great with this but you should tell them and have your sister tell them too. Your dad seems to really care about you. Your uncle can’t get away with the pain he’s bring upon you. It’s not your fault your strong I hope you and your sister get through this and your uncle get punished for what he’s done to you. Who cares if there’s dispute I know your scared but you have people there for you. I’m sorry if this doesn’t help but I want to do my best for you.

I love your videos, they are extremely educational on this topic and I’ve been showing them to my nieces and nephews so it can hopefully help prevent them from experiencing something like that, or at least be able to tell, unlike me.
16 years old and it’s still a big secret from my family, only a few friends know. I want to tell my mom but I’m terrified, I don’t want to see her cry.

These are so well written and animated, they are very thoughtful when they put out these shorts showcasing the effects of abuse. This is honestly a more palatable way to show abuse to children and to show them how they should get help if they happen to need it(or help a friend who they know is in trouble).

As someone who went through this, this film is heartbreaking to me. I love it very much though
I love how this channel helps children understand what abuse is and how they can seek help. However, I would love there to be an animation where there's an individual that doesn't have support on their side. Most people who are going through abuse don't necessarily have support and I would love to see that interpretation shown for kids that don't have help and see what they can do and where they can go to find that help.

The good teacher looks like my really nice science teacher, I'll always remember him. It's really horrible and unfortunate that people have the stupid of mindset of thinking they're able to get away with what they're doing. I really appreciate this video even though I've had no major experiences :]
I'm genuinely surprised at how good the writing is, and how smooth the animation is.
Something similar happened to me but at the time it was quite inescapable so I had to act extremely rude and terrible so the person would stop. Nobody took my signs and nobody listened to me when I cried for help. This video really helped me feel seen and heard for my experiences. I cried so hard at the last part, I wish someone had listened to me. Nobody deserves to go through this and nobody deserves to be Ignored in these situations.

i'm not ashamed to admit i cried. i know how this feels. it's so hard to tell people what happened, especially when you feel like it's your fault if the person who hurt you gets in trouble. i have nightmares almost every night about what's happened and i'm working through it with a therapist. i'm proud of myself for telling someone. i don't deserve to hurt like this, no one does.
When I saw her float away from his teacher, I didn't understand it, but I started to cry. I went through a different kind of abuse, but still sexual nontheless. I would like to talk about it, but venting on a comment section is a little bit too much, right?

They need to show these at school instead of the cheesy “speak up 🥺🥺” videos. These show the REAL effects of SA and it could possibly make people take things like this more seriously.
I was abused by one of my "friends" for a while, not sexually or anything but they would bring me down and hit me and played it off as a joke. No one ever believes me or takes me seriously when I say this, but someone saying "I believe you" would mean the world to me.
If anyone is going through this right now, you're not alone and I believe you.

@@averageminecraftenjoyer9419 nah, it's not, she constantly hit me and called me ugly and just overall ruined my self esteem tbh. She faked tourettes in order to call me names and hit me. I don't have to deal with it anymore luckily.
I went through somthing like this twice the first time i was really young I told my mom she said why were you there? As if it was my fault… I was disappointed by her answer felt like I couldn’t even talk to my parents about anything after that. The secound time it happened when I was a little older it was a close family friend.. At this point I just held my tongue until they moved never told a soul personally just felt like nobody would believe me or do anything about it or want to deal with the problem.. all my life i just learned to sweap things under the rug keep quiet don’t say anything cause if you do you’ll cause a bigger scene than what anybody wants to deal with. Never went to therapy I don’t believe in it.. I’ve just learned to numb it over time……

Omg this made me cry, there’s tears streaming down my face rn. I’m a SA victim too, but the person was my then-nanny (it’s common where I live to have a live-in nanny, and both my parents worked, so…). I was 9-11 years old, it happened over the span of two years, and oh my god that I don’t believe in because this happens all the time, the relief I felt when I finally told my mom… it was the best. She’s gone now, but I have to struggle with the aftermath. It’s been three years, and only now is my body image improving, but that’s about it. I don’t go to therapy and she got away with nothing more than a firm talking-to from my mom and losing her job. Nobody knows, nobody checks in with me and I’m so lonely and existing hurts and some days I wish that things weren’t like this- wow I went full-on vent mode lol sorry. Anyway thanks internet strangers for reading, hope your life’s better than mine :)

honestly it took me when i finally went back to my faith as a child to tell my life story from birth til now honestly looking back i see how strong i really am i had amazing people my step dad my mom alex jesse dont forget hot cocoa probverbs loving master sensie he was my favorite and no nonsense nana those was the days honestly now looking back i see i need to find that spark of courage and be with the man i married for its not just the right thing and adult thing its who wants me in his life
I know how this hits hard . I've been sexually abused 3 times as a kid and early teens and those things tormented me for years . but thanks to that I've become an adult who helps kids in the school to not suffer the same fate . always giving them advice especially about the abusive adults on internet out there . this is a great animation to make other ppl to open their eyes about this kind of crimes

My college professors told me that I looked like I was going to “drop dead” at any moment. I knew I was depressed but I didn’t realize anyone noticed. Once I heard that, I was just appalled. Like why didn’t they do anything about it? I’ve been depressed over 20 years now and no one has ever cared. ( Except I will say this year I finally found a good doctor with God’s help.) I’m still trying to fight my way into therapy. I’m only 33.

I almost cried... It really is so isolating when you're scared to talk about what's happening. Unfortunately, not everyone receives justice, even if they do speak out, but all it takes is just the right person to respect you and hear you and make you feel safe to talk about it... To really pull someone out of that despair and pain.
