  • I had issues with scalping at the lowest setting. I designed and added a roller mod for this mower which solves this issue. See parts list below
    Roller wheels, Grind off spindle with right angle grinder and drill out to 3/8 inch diameter
    www.harborfrei...
    3/8 inch threaded rod
    www.lowes.com/...
    3/8 inch plastic spacers similar to this but I used plastic because the metal was out of stock. Can be found in their drawers of specialty hardware items
    www.lowes.com/...
    Couple 3/8" nuts and lock washers and you are good to go!

    Find a roller off an old conveyor belt and cram that in there. This is an excellent modification.

    Very creative little mod, your SJ is starting to look more and more like a Swardman or one of the other pro cylinder mowers. Here on the gulf coast of Thailand, I've been maintaining around 1,200sf of a tropical variety which I believe is Zoysia with a 16" Gardena manual reel mower. All is fine if I mow every third day, not so fine if it goes for more than 5 days between mows, but hard to avoid if on a scuba trip out of province. No cordless reel mowers here yet, it is easier for me to source a "battery less" Ozito from AU, or an Einhell from DL (both come from the same Chinese factory) then a US model due to voltage and Li ion batteries/airfreight issues. Too bad because the SJ looks pretty well built. May even motorize the Gardena, it has a very stout and wicked sharp fixed blade, but undecided.

      Hi Andrew thanks for watching and the kind words. I just googled gulf coast of Thailand and holy cow it looks amazingly beautiful!!! I believe The Gardena machines look really good I have seen them online but they don't seem to make it here in the US. I don't know how Thailand manages lawn chemicals but if you can get a hold of plant growth regulator it can slow down the topgrowth of the turf allowing you more time between mows. This is something I plan to use next season. Right now I would rather mow every other day as the grass is repairing itself. When I'm happy with it then I'll start regulating it. It's suppose to also deepen the green and suppress seeding.

    Great idea, it stops from scalping the lawn. Maybe have a machine shop make a 2" roller as that would make it more stable.

    Wow, What a great idea! So... since it's been a year since this posting, was the threaded rod the way to go? Any issues with it surviving bangs and rougher handling? Looking back would you have done anything different if you were to do this mod again? I've seen other videos on this model mower where their owners ran over sticks and bent blades that then needed to be blended out so this mod seems that it'd be a great way to prevent that from happening. Have you noticed these casters preventing you from running over sticks, ect??? Again, Great mod! LOVE IT!!

      Hi Ronald, thanks for the interest and nice words. It worked great all season and still rolls well. While improvements could be made with a machined smooth rod and bearings I'm not sure it's worth it considering the price of the mower👍👍

    This is sort of off topic but have you thought about modding the height of cut notches? I am debating if I can drill/zip away in between the current holes and then replace the pull pin with a bolt/nut. Not being able to go in between 0.6" and 1" is killing me :D

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  3 года назад +2

      While I hadn't considered it it sounds like a great idea for someone who needs additional flexibility in the height of cut. Personally for me the lowest setting is working. ,👍👍

    • @robstealey1856
      @robstealey1856 2 года назад +1

      Amen to this. This is a great little reel for the price, but the increments of 1/2” between all the HOC settings (0.6”, 1.0”, 1.5”, 2.0”) is WAAAY too much. A quarter inch is still a little too much of an increment but would go a long ways in making this more versatile. I’d like to do a summer reset right now, but if I scalp at 0.6”, then I’ll have to wait until grass gets all the way back up to 1.0” before I’m cutting again. That’s too much growth after a reset. A 0.75” setting would be great.
      Another question, are you happy with those casters after a year or do you think there might be something else you’d like better?

      Hi Rob! Thanks for the suggestions!. So I have no issues and am happy with it so far. Of course it would be cool to have them running on bearings but then it gets pretty expensive.👍👍👍👍

    Nice work. I've seen others modify manual reels with conveyor rollers. Did you consider that option at any point? Sorry if you said that and I missed it.

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  2 года назад +2

      Hello! Thanks for the interest and comments. I did consider that option but decided to go a different route for two reasons. First, I couldn't find a roller that was easily accessible that fit the required width. The second reason is that the mower in this case is very lightweight. I was worried on thick grass the mower would float and not cut as low as otherwise possible. Hope this helps 👍

    • @robstealey1856
      @robstealey1856 2 года назад +1

      What you’ve created is more akin to a grooved roller than a flat roller and that produces a better cut…kuddos.

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  2 года назад

      @@robstealey1856 Thanks! I actually targeted a more grooved design. Because the mower is so light I was worried about it floating on the dense grass.👍👍👍👍

    Hi Jason. Great video! I just ordered this mower and want to do the same mod. My two month old zoysia sod is very bumpy. I’m thinking I probably can’t sand level until next year. Not sure about that. Anyway, I’m gonna do this mod immediately. Do you have any links for the rollers and rod you used? Might as well order them today. Thanks!

    • @jasonochoada3083
      @jasonochoada3083  3 года назад +2

      Hi Derek! Yes I had considered that exact same idea but didn't have on hand access to a roller I could use and didn't want to take the chance of ordering the wrong rollers online. Conceptually I think it's a great idea. Striping with this mower will depend on the type of grass. I'm cutting Bermuda low and with the light weight of the mower little to know striping even though the back has a significantly wide roller. Now if you are working with cool season grasses I think striping will be much easier 👍👍
