Glad I found you. Dann is one of my fave players. You hit on something that I always thought was happening, because if you are alt picking (as you pointed out) you have some problematic issues that are caused by the nature of the instrument. The thing is, Dann's left hand technique, precision, dexterity, and finger strength are really second to none. And I do mean, "second to none." He is SO good with his left hand that it comes out sounding like everything is picked! No one (Vai, Satriani, Gilbert, etc.) has that kind of left hand ability in that way. Granted, the aforementioned are better than Dann in other ways, but not in the subject spoken of here.

@@RichardWatson Hey Richard have you heared some of those isolated Dann Huff tracks floating about on youtube? i think there's a Peter Cetera one, Michael Jackson one and a Belinda Carlisle one i think.... Just to think all those years ago when those songs were in the pop charts many people didn't hear all those amazing parts going on, but with the isolated tracks it blows your mind how good those parts are! :-)

This was a really great lesson, those fast explosive runs of Dans' are one of my favourite things about his playing. I've realised the thing you're pointing out here was staring me in the face when I was playing some of his parts, like the intro to Time to Burn and the end of I'm a Believer where he's using the principle you cover here - great stuff! really made sense to me and gives me something too really practice This series on session players sounds great. I do hope you're including the late great Alan Murphy. i think one of this nations finest ever players, and what about some Steve Farris?, someone your old mentor was a friend of.

Wow. Just got thru to the part where you do that first descending run. Can't wait to try that. I've always had problems with alternate picking although I can do some triplets pretty fast but it's great to find alternatives to straight alternate picking.
Yeah man! It makes a lot of sense from a technique standpoint! Dann does some straight alt picking stuff too but it's definitely blended with this technique pretty frequently. Have fun!
The most difficult part of playing fast is not losing your tone. I find that hitting the strings rapidly in a smooth and controlled way, especially when switching strings, takes a lot of concentration when practicing to get consistent. His outro in "Innocent Days" is blisteringly fast, but sounds effortless.
Yeah man, that was something that hit me about Dann's playing early on; he's a super economical player and always seems completely relaxed, it's really evident on his instructional VHS!

Hey Doug! In truth I haven't had the opportunity to play that many Tyler pickups! My classic has a Secret humbucker, which is absolutely one of my favourites. It seems voiced to sit perfectly in a mix. From listening to friends like Kristian Larsen, I can say that the Super is great, and I really like the sound of the Shark (used in the newer yellow Huff classic). As for single coils, the JTS5500 is a wonderful sounding pickup - very 3D-sounding, pairs great with the Secret in the bridge and really versatile. Hope that helps, man! The Tyler Facebook group (moderated by Matt Valencia) is a great place to get opinions on pickups as the guys there have tried everything!
Hey Miko! It's just making sure you tap the fret itself (the same placement as if you were hitting a natural harmonic)- a short and sharp tap should bring it out! Bridge pickup and sufficient gain will also help!
