Although Facebook released a new messaging app for kids, the general public, including parents, are not so sure about this new prized product. Facebook says that the kids messenger app is a standalone app complete with parental controls. It requires authorization through the parents adult Facebook app and generally the parent controls who the child was able to connect with. the new kids messenger app was released on December 4th for iPhone only but will be released later in the month of December on Android.
When thinking about this app and considering the state of affairs with children and social media today, I could not help but Wonder aren't kids younger than 13 Going on Facebook anyway? is Facebook just trying to develop a feeder system for their adult app because they are losing popularity with the younger demographic? And although Facebook claims not to be placing ads in the kids messenger app, could they be collecting some kind of data about children under the age of 13, maybe they are monitoring habits and preferences of children as they interact with the app in preparation for marketing and advertising future products surrounding those habits and preferences.
another very important thought I had was regarding ads and advertisement and marketing practices geared towards children. When we look at TV networks such as Nickelodeon and Disney, I can't help but wonder if people get angry when ads on those networks are aimed at children.
another thing I was thinking about was internet addiction. And could Facebook be using the kids messenger app to get kids addicted to their screens and the internet much earlier? according to Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, ages 6 to 12 are the ages when children should be developing social, economic and physical competencies. But as they engage with this new app, might this be the new norm?
And finally, what is Facebook doing to protect against child predators? this kids messenger app for Facebook really is super accessible to anyone who intends to harm a child. and I hope there are measures put in to monitor at random accounts that can possibly be deemed suspicious

Great questions Jay. It will be very interesting to see how popular FB Messenger Kids becomes given that as you say, tweens and teens are using other apps in preference to FB. Definitely something to keep an eye on!

Yep I agree...although FB would have done masses of research before pouring so much effort, time and money into this. They must've decided to go ahead with it for a reason. Interesting...
It's a pretty bold move as they aren't really competing with anyone for this demographic. this may open up the flood gates to other companies trying to target the little ones. Btw, when i went to google play store to search for messenger kids, there were a ton of other lesser known apps aimed at kid messaging.

Oh wow really? Yes maybe you're right then, soon it might become normal for 6-yr-olds to be chatting on social media...arghhhh!!!!!

Is Facebook going to cause even more tech addiction for children with this new app? That’s a great question. But ultimately is our Job as parents to avoid that from happening by restricting the amount of time they are behind screens.

I wanted to know how to chnage the settings for messenger kids. It looks like my son is the administrator for the acct. I don’t get any notifications at all from him. I am very confused.

That seems super weird to me, how many adults are using FB msg? For me no matter what steps are put in place, I think its still on the parents to parent. I would like to hear the reason for creating this app for kids. Most kids at that age are either texting each other or in SnapChat.
+Bearded Consumer you would be surprised at how many kids are using Facebook today. I mean regular adult Facebook. Also, by intentionally targeting the younger population they are grabbing a bunch of kids who are like 7 or 8 years old who don't know that Facebook isn't cool anymore. Regarding your statement about it's on the parents to parent, many parents are not exactly sure on how to parent with this new digital media we live with. That's why I started this channel. Tech Parental I would agree my mother was giving my 3rd a tablet to watch videos on youtube and didnt think nothing of it. I had to explain to her you cant do that. Its no telling what you will find on videos. So my hat goes off to you for creating this space.
