Here are the 5 Quick Tips for painting a bathroom
#1 - Get good painting tools
#2 - Get good tape
#3 - Time management
#4 - Turn up the heat
#5 - Trim cut-ins and second coat
Painting a bathroom starts with having the proper tools. Chris recommends the Purdy Clearcut brush for trim and cut-ins. He also uses the Purdy WhiteDove rollers for a smooth finish. Furthermore, Chris uses Frog Tape with a clear paintable caulk (e.g. Sherwin Williams' 950A) to create laser straight lights at baseboards, door casings, window trim and more.
The key to painting a bathroom fast is to apply the first rolled on coat quickly and light. Then turn up the heat in the house to 75F. This helps the paint dry quickly.

Thank you John Cena for the painting tips!
Bahahahaha 🤣
That's what I was thinking lol!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😩
LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣 I thought it was just me
Lol 😂 I was just thinking the same thing!
When doing instructional video please include the part where you actually paint. I need all the help I can get to learn how to do this well.
+Carl Demmin will do, the Idaho Painter has a ton of great paint tips on his channel. Can’t recommend him enough
Idaho painter
See Idaho Painters channel, he has 10 billion detailed videos and also the ones he talked about here.
I was thinking exactly this. Great video and I'm sure this guy really knows what he's doing, but if you're new to this kind of thing, just saying "do your cut ins" sort of ads extra steps to follow along. Good video, don't get me wrong.
If it takes not only someone telling you what you need, and the step-by-step procedure - but on top of that to also see someone physically paint you'd be better off hiring someone...
It's not at all complicated..
It's the equivalent to saying someone telling you to wipe your ass - then you exclaiming you need to see them do it...
With wall prep (washing walls with dish soap, degreasing around light switches and outlets), removing towel racks, and switch/outlet plates & masking. You're looking more at like 3.5 to 4 hours. Then brush and roller clean up 👍🏻
Idaho Painter, I love, love love, the Spring Tool spring punch. Its an incredible tool. Thanks so much for the tip. Watching your your video's are so incredibly helpful.
number one rule I learnt when painting is that the amount of effort you put in, is what you get when it's done. Nothing worse than having to spend extra time on going over places you rushed over or didn't spend the time before hand preping. You definitely want to spend some time removing fixtures so you don't get paint all over them/ spending too much time trying to avoid getting spill over on. I'm not a painter but I watched a fair few different painting vids to get the rough idea before I started.. good luck out there people.
Agreed
A little patience and a steady eye stood me in good stead. I painted my kitchen and bathroom ceilings white after they had to be stripped and replastered (I left that job to the professionals). Due to limited time at home I think I did the undercoat one day and the top coat the next. It wasn't too bad a job even if I say so myself. Yes,there are a few imperfections and the most subtle of patternings but they don't stand out unless you look really closely.
Now I cannot decide which colour to paint my bathroom walls. They were covered with light pink wallpaper, which I had to strip off because it began to pell in places due to condensation. Now,utensils, fixtures and fittings apart, the walls are bare apart from some random splodges of white paint underneath.
Over time I've started seeing things in those splodges, that they look like. So on one idle day I wrote on a few of the splodges in small black biro letters what I think they resemble. There is:
[a near-lifesize terrier-type] dog
horse's head
[near-lifesize] rabbit
[the head of a] lioness
Lada [yes, one of those noddy old East European cars]
polar bear
Africa [after a serious sea level rise that appears to have denuded it of the horn on the eastern side and everything from the west end of Morocco down to Ghana in the west; plus South Africa,Namibia,Botswana and Angola appear to be under some kind of gigantic shadow]
and a small heart.
Plus there is a permanent shadowy mark on the floor that is exactly the same shape as a fox.
Well,it's something to look at while sitting on the crapper.
Thanks a lot for that. With the explanation of 'cut ins' in the comments, this has been one of the clearest videos I've watched! I actually feel that I can do this!
This guy looks like John Cena😂
+Hardcore Gamer5639 now I know who Chris looks like, lol. He's got the 💪
Hardcore Gamer5639 how if you cant see him

Hokey Smokes Bullwinkle! Your right!
But visible
Thank you for this video, I love the straight forward tips and not the ongoing mambo jumbo other videos have. 🙌🏼👌🏼👏🏼
Great tips. I didnt know about the frog tape and light 1st paint coat. I use the blue painters tape. True about the cheap brushes and rollers, they fall apart easier.
This is a great video for understanding the most efficient way to approach the overall process. Some commentors are frustrated that not more specifics were discussed. There are other videos Chris does for that information. This is very helpful. I wish I had watched this and his 5 videos on cutting trim on ceilings and how to get straight lines when cutting trim before I attempted my bathroom. But this is saving me some extra worry already. Thanks, Chris and Home Repair Tutor.
How did you get john cena to paint your bathroom 😂
Bro that’s what I thought 😂😂
Make sure you ventilate area well too. I got a headache the other day from painting a bathroom 🤯
Does anyone else remember the Kleen Edge baby blue tape? Man that stuff was the bomb. Thanks for the great vids IP. Always a good resource. White Dove naps are second to none.. Whats your workout routine? You always Looking swoll as hell!
Great video, very explanatory, thank you so much!!
I’m wondering if you have any tips for painting a small powder room with a very high ceiling. I’m not even sure a ladder will fit in the room. I am a decent painter but I do my best work when I’m not using an extension pole and a brush to cut in. I’m going for a rich navy color against a white ceiling and trim so I need to be precise. Thank you!
hey, I cannot find the video "how to select the paint for bathroom" ?? do you have it?
How long after painting a bathroom baseboards can I use the shower ? I’m worried the moisture will prevent drying correctly
Dam HRT is going up in the world. Y'all got John Cena teaching us how to paint 😂
+Trevin Shu lol, we try. Chris is an excellent painter and teacher
Great tips. Thanks!
+SyberPrepper 👍
The Idaho Painter is legit a great creator and seems like a great guy
Caulking and cut ins? But what does that mean🤷🏻♀️
Cutting in is when you paint where a wall meets a forgein surface. The fine line between your typical white ceiling, and the wall, or where the wall meets the vanity. You're carefully "cutting in" on the corner with the paint brush. You can't roll to the top of the wall. Your roller will hit the ceiling. You can only roll so high, then you MUST paint the top few inches of the wall with a brush.
🙄
Cut in edges you tape edges so the lines look perfect
Thank you!! This was very helpful because I have never painted a room before, and I looked for a tutorial and he kept talking about cut ins but never explained it. Not very helpful on his part.
Awesome video, thank you very much. I just subscribed to both channels.
Thank you! Painting my bathroom tomorrow
I love the Idaho painter videos..he is the man
To prepare walls, do I need to sand the old walls a little bit or just wash it with soap before painting?
How do you remove dried paint from Floors and things like sinks or vanity's?
It would be easier to watch!
I tried to find your video showing how to use caulking on the masking Frog tape. I can't envision when you apply the caulking to the tape.
Very interesting Chris 🙏🏽
Great help thank you
Can I use the Purdy 3/8 contractor rollers for the same effect?
What sheen should I use for the bathroom??? Flat, eggshell, satin?
hi Chris, do you recommend sanding walls between coats?
Rt L Patching and sanding , if necessary, would be done before any painting.
I would have thought it would only necessary if the surface was rough or not flat in places, and yes Edwin is right it would be done before any painting.
Do you also recommend painting the baseboards or cleaning them before starting with painting the walls?
I'd definitely clean the surface before painting,to remove any dust, cobwebs and specks of dirt that may be present. I just used water, perhaps with a little washing-up liquid.
Good day, good video. What do you recommend for a concert restroom. (Primer and paint ) my whole house is made of CONCERT. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
Aldo from California.

5. 6:22 Final cut ins & coat
Wow. He's my favorite painter on RUclips. What a great pairing.
What is you’re channel I want to see what paint to select
I don't liking using tape or rollers when I paint. I always use a good quality paint brush, good quality primer and quality paint. By the time I lay tape, I could have used an angle brush to paint the spot. I learned some tricks from an old timer that was in the painting business for decades. Old man Fargo was slick when it came to painting transition areas! His lines were straight as an arrow and fast. He had a feel of the paint in the can and on his brush. His motto was "a painter uses a roller or sprayer; an artist uses a brush."
Interesting, bc I’m an artist (murals) and I use a sprayer. I can blend like nobody’s business. I still use brushes too tho!
😂😂 Shurline has you covered for anything you could think of. Throw your brushes in garbage young picasso.
Can I paint over a interior wall that was painted with exterior paint?
Ugh NOW I look this up since it took me al day to paint a powder room!! My entire downstairs almost didn’t take this long. :) I should have looked u up last night given I reference the Idaho painter channel all the time. Lesson learned!
Whats best way to degloss bathroom ceiling with orange peel texture. Have searched and watched many of your videos as a long time loyal fan but never saw this addressed. I saw a video of your crew in a house and talking/showing deglossing trim but not an orange peel ceiling. I'm thinking I'd have to sand the orange peel completely off, if sanding as I couldnt take off the gloss of the low orange peel areas. So now I'm thinking of using the chemical deglosser but thats best way to do it on the ceiling and upper walls. Im thinking about just rolling it on with a thin nap. Krud Kutter says you dont have to remove it, although I saw you guts removing it, or was that just because it was the trim and needed to be clean and smooth, where as an orange peel ceiling is irregular to begin with. Yikes what to do. Any comments anyone? I'm going to try rolling a small area tonight. Ah.....the paint life!
Update... Okay its a half hours or so later. I tried Krud Cutter on door trim and orange peel wall surface and I really cant tell any difference on the wall and maybe just a very slight difference on the trim. I followed the bottles instructions and saturate a cloth and did swirling motions, I repeatedly saturated the cloth to the point it was dripping some on the floor. Went over the same 10" x 14 inch area on the wall twice and no difference to the section around it, I did not see alot of white paint on my rag, after all that, maybe just as if 2 drops where smeared on it. If anything the trim looks better and more shiny!!!! Perhaps its because it smoothed it out and cleaned it up. Its BM Pro Paint Stock Frost Color painted in 1997 and before this it was in great condition, even after Krud Kutter deglosser its in great condition. I love Krud Cutter products, their goo off and something else I got to clean the oils stain crud off my engines piston worked fantastic, so no prejudice for their line of products, this just doesn't seem to be working . It is night time but the bathroom lights shine equally on both, I tired using a flashlight but still no difference. I'll wait till sunlight tomorrow. So far I'm terrorized I have 3 large bathrooms a gigantic kitchen a long hallway and whats called a butlers pantry for china and dishes (we dont have butlers) at this rate I might as well take down the orange peel and start a new, it would be far faster. Save me Idaho Painter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
My issue is I can't reach certain places in the bathroom bec of the tub, tell me how to get above the tub!
Subscribed!
thanks, let me know if you have any questions. Are you tackling a remodel soon?
what about type of paint to use for bathrooms? matte, semi gloss, mildew free?
+How I made the latter two options, semi gloss is easier to clean and mildew resistance is always important in bathrooms
Where can I get a shirt?
How do u stop repair spots that bubble after painting from sheen to semi gloss in bathroom? Goes away til u shower then reappears
It's John Ceeeeeena!!!
Never painted anything in my life we had a guy paint our small bathroom paid him $300 dollars you scratch it comes off cheap job i want to learn to do it right thanks
Really wish I watched these videos before I fucked up my walls with paint haha

Stone Cold Steve Austin wearing John Cena's attire.
Stone Cena John Austin
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
How much does he get paid for all of the product placement?
I would of loved if you would of explained while you are actually doing it. Thank you for the info.
Holy moly. I thought you were going to show us some tips, not just talk about them. You completely lost me on cutting in. And I don't know whether the caulking seal goes under the frog tape or over it. Other than sending me to your Amazon links, what was the point of this? Now I have to go find your seven other videos that demonstrate the actual how to's?
Kat Jaibur cut ins are areas that are too tight for a roller to get to such as corners, edges, door knobs and fixtures . Once you finish your cut ins with your brush then use your roller to cover your large area...wall, ceilings etc. I hope this helps. I’m not a professional just have some experience with my personal DYI home projects.
Yea this was shit
I am with you! A whole lot of blabbing and absolutely no demonstrating! I learn best with demonstration. Also, just can’t stand the way this guy talks.
I was wondering if you could give me tips on getting rid of mold? The last guys that did our bathroom used moldy paint and now we have a big mold problem in our bathroom. Please help!
Also the paint is peeling 😖
Besides turning on the fan, there wasn’t anything specific to bathrooms. I was looking for advice on how to paint behind the toilet and stand alone bathtub.
Came to watch because I thought John Cena was presenting 😂
+AeroPR lol, Chris does look like him!! Hope we didn't disappoint
This was hardly specific to bathrooms.
No surface prep and a two-hour job? Good luck, homeowners!
I know, I was wondering about washing the walls.
💞💞
I thought that was John cena in the thumbnail lol
What do you mean when you say "cut", I cannot understand
Wow I really thought John Cena was doing the bathroom after a comment lol
Links to product don’t work
Don't you need to prepare the walls with sugar soap or something like that? Lots of Purdy products. These are not available in Europe.
🥵Big quality TIP
This is very generic advise that applies to any room. I was waiting for advice on what kind of paint to use to in bathrooms that prevents peeling and molding.
I just learned what I am. I’m a do-it-yourselfer...
Sounds like good quality expensive
I like your vdeo but you speak to much
I used frog tape and when I pulled it off it ripped the paint off
Late comment since yours is 8 months old, but maybe it helps in the future. I’ve had that happen when painting over semi-gloss paint that I didn’t prep the surface as well as I should, and I let the paint dry on the tape a little too long.
Not once did he mention navigating the toilet. Three bathrooms to paint and still winging it.
I agree as far as there was way too much talking. He should of shown some examples of a fast forward of him painting and completing a bathroom In half a day
Stone Cold look alike.....howdy!
LOL, true.
Cheryl Oldford more like John ceena
Saul Carrasco yeah! Your right there. Lol
I swear to fucking god he looks like John Cenas brother
Could be a helpful video for beginners but there's a lot of repeating and redundant statements. Better editing?
Cut in cut in cut in cut out cut in . Buy the most expensive buy the most expensive blah blah geez
itsssss....JOHN CENA....
bum budam bum
John cena
No bathroom painting tips. Moving the toilet, cabinets, etc
he looks like john cena
Too much talking. If you really wanna show how to do it just do it. Those are not even tips on how to paint a bathroom. You are just giving your opinion about good and bad quality products. Everyone knows that.
Sorry your feel that way Gerardo, you can check out The Idaho Painter's RUclips channel for more tips. He's a great resource.
Ohhhhhhh... Yup still lost.
Thanks John Cena
It sounds like he has a bit of a Scottish accent??
Sponsored by Purdy.
All talk no action.
Why is it that this video spends the first half pushing products?... Here's my protip: If a how-to video has links in the description that lead to buying what is pushed in the video, IT IS NOT A HOW-TO VIDEO; IT IS AN ADVERTISEMENT MASQUERADING AS ONE. at what point do you see any actual painting happening? Never. At what point do you see surface prep? Never. At what point do we learn how to paint hard-to-access places such as behind the toilet? Never. At what point does it even make sense to have this as a video at all rather than just a typed up script? Never, because he doesn't even do anything but talk. Someone will undoubtedly reply that I should "check out his other videos", but what sense did making this video have in that case? #1 rule when trying to learn something on youtube: is this more educational, or is it more of an advertisement?
You should NEVER use a latex or water base (or BEHR brands) paint in bathroom. Use oil base .
What the hell are cut ins and cocking?
He's talking about them as if I should know.
It would have been better is you at least demonstrated each thing
This video was a waste of nearly 10 minutes... I wanted to know how to paint around a freakin' toilet that is why I searched for a video with BATHROOM in it. These tips are just general painting tips...
Khaltazar ruclips.net/video/ZHKDcrBxmy4/видео.html
Not very informative video. Just talking, no painting!
Is this dude going to show you anything?
No tips. Just product placement plugs. Waste of time.
too much talking......yawnnnnnn
These Videos too much talking
