Importance of water to prey capture in Nepenthes

  • At an ICPS conference many moons ago, I saw a presentation regarding
the manner in which certain species of Nepenthes captured their prey, and that very moist environments that would make the peristome wet radically increase prey capture efficiency. I tested this out with one of my Nepenthes xrokko x veitchii when I flushed out a nest of Argentinean ants while watering. The first half of the video shows ants scurrying to escape the flood waters running up and down the plant. Those that are clambering about on the pitcher sometimes do fall in, but as often as not manage the peristome quite safely. I then spritzed the pitcher with some water (I leave it to you to determine at what point in the video that happens) at which point you can see a radical change where the peristome becomes almost frictionless, and simply setting foot on it means certain death with a rapid plunge into the gaping maw of the pitcher. As always, I can be reached at LACPS.org, djfrank.com, or dj4re4u@aol.com
