I recently moved my huge nepenthes from my outdoor verandah because it's winter here into my laundry, it's warmer in there and it gets bright indirect light right next to the window most of the day when before it got no direct light but bright shade. It seems to be growing a lot of new leaves but still no pitchers. It's trying, I see the tiny little pitchers at the tips but they always go brown and turn into nothing. Do you know what might be wrong? It is a very large plant, very healthy looking, huge shiny green leaves, growing over the sides like a vine, I re-potted it recently in long fiber sphagnum and perlite, what I always use, it's very well draining and airy and I water it with rain water. I also try to mist it with distilled water whenever I go in the laundry, it stays nice and moist for about half the day if I mist it in the morning. I really don't know what more I can do, do you think because it's winter and quite cold that's causing the problem? My laundry is tiled and gets very cold at night, maybe around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. I'm not sure of the variety, but it looked almost identical to yours in this video when it was that size and had the same kind of pitchers.
it's possibly adapting to it's new condition. If you still dont have any new pitcher in 2-3 leaves, then it may need more light with possibly more humidity. ;)
With super high humidity like that and if you have a well drained substrate, like 50/50 sphagnum/Perlite, I would water every 7-10 days. As long as the substrate is moist is good. ;)
Thanks for the test, very nice. Mine came from the store in peat/perlite but I want to repot in sphagnum/perlite, can I do this without isse or should I expect the plants to react/complain about this?
Hi i got my nepenthes from the mail, but the leaves came yellow, and the tips of the leaves brown, what can i do to save my nepenthes? Thank you, love your videos
Yes, my mix is *dried sphagnum moss, perlite* and some coco husk (just because I have some but that's not mandatory). I top with live sphagnum but not more than 1 cm and it's also not mandatory. ;)
Depends... Is that a new leaf or an old one? Did the condition where the plant was growing changed? Maybe check this old video: ruclips.net/video/VO15ssY1DIM/видео.html
When the tray is totally evaporated, do you water it or you wait like 2 or 3 days ? Because if I don't wait, my pot will always be sitting in water. I use perlite and long fiber sphagnum like you :)
My nepenthes are in an indoor greenhouse. Not much evaporation I don’t think because I’m using Grow Lights. I spray them about three times a day .If I leave for a couple of days, should I saturate the substrate or is it OK to use the water tray method? I don’t want root rot, but I don’t want them to dry out.
If you don't have high evaporation, they should handle a full week without water. They are resistant to a little lack of water, but not so much for over watering (root rot). Less is better than too much 😉 Just water them before you go
Thank you for the video! Got a beautiful nepenthes in lithuania, the nepenthes in general is super hard to find here as is, the one I got is absolutely gorgeous. P.S; I'm from Canada, Quebec actually, and your accent is reminding me of home ;') best of luck to you!
@@WindowsillNepenthes I do have one question but I'm not sure if it's video worthy lol My Nepenthes has a basal shoot. Because of how hard nepenthes in general can be to find here, I wish to propagate it. However, I don't have space in my mini greenhouse to put it. Do you have any techniques to replicate a humid environment? Like taking a see-through plastic cup, spraying water in it and putting it upside down over the propagated basal sprout, or putting it in a ziploc bag, or anything else? Thank you!
I have the humidity for my nepenthes set at 80%. And I spray any tendrils with water as often as possible. Is that not necessary? Will they do just fine at 70%? . The light is the first most important thing I think, and then secondary is humidity for the pitchers to form, right?
Excellent video! How often do you mist the leaves? I live in Israel where it’s warmer and drier than Canada, especially in winter. My Nepenthes grows indoors on my windowsill. I am contemplating if to mist it and how often.
Thanks! I tend to mist morning + evening in week day and the afternoon in plus during the weekend. How many nepenthes do you have on your windowsill? I'd love to interview you as you are in a very different climate. 😀
@@WindowsillNepenthes thank you Remy, but I'm just a begginer. So not much to interview about. Here in Israel there aren't really any growers selling plants. Most plants are imported from JM plants in the Netherlands, so we don't get much variety. I only have one plant at this time. Maybe I should order seeds online?
Can I use a Globe to water them Like one of those globes that you fill with water and stick it down into the soil so that it's slowly Waters the plant for days ,
I just purchased a nepenthes "lady luck," and re-potting it i see there are actually two plants in the pot. I suppose to make it look full. Should I separate them? Looking at the roots i see two separate starter pots!
I usually collect the rainwater from my gutter in buckets and then store them in cans :) But this year I invested in a rain barrel. It's a 50 US gal = 190L :D
If the sides of my leaves are going from straight to kind of curling on my nepenthes gaya, is that from too much watering? I watered them a week ago and the pot is still kind of heavy. Or is it nothing?
Great Video and sympatic guy 👍 Your plants Look like very good 👍 My Nepenthes Macrophylla and platychila x lowii grow also very well, even without a terrarium and i do it just like you do. I just have peat, perlite mixture with sphagnum planting, for the humidity. Greetings from Germany :)
@@WindowsillNepenthes Moin (hey)🙋♂️, my nepenthes all grow on the windowsill. i have the window open 24/7, so air circulation is guaranteed and we currently have a great climate for the plants in germany. Sun in the morning and thunderstorms or rain in the afternoon at 25-28 ° and at night around 14 ° and high humidity. at night i close my curtains and the window is open and this creates my own microclimate. my macrophylla is also very small (Seedling (4-6cm ø) and i have had it for two months, it is growing super and forming new pitcher, just like my other two large nepenthes. I could also send you pictures or a video so that you can convince yourself, but unfortunately it doesn't work here on youtube.😅🤷♂️ Best regards 🙋♂️🙂
We're neighbors I'm in northern Mn. Reason I asked is I have a female plant(nepenthes)and am interested in obtaining some pollen, thought knowing species would be useful.
I have my nepenthes sitting on a heat mat. I’m reluctant to try the water tray method because of potential root rot. I was thinking of experimenting with having each of my pots sitting in a bowl filled with just a little bit of rain water so that the water would be barely touching the sphagnum Moss inside the pot. Do this so I can leave for two or three days without worrying about them and I wanna try this so that maybe I don’t have to spray them every day like I’ve been doing
@@WindowsillNepenthes I use sphagnum moss with perlite 50/50 mixture. The nepenthes are all either intermediate or lowland. Mostly hybrids as well which are very hardy in terms of acclimation
A real clone would be taking a cutting as it's 100% plant and yes, I know how. if you are talking about tissue culture, from my understanding it's not really cloning as they use seeds.
If it's a few leaves it can come back, if it's the whole plant probably not except if you give it perfect care. Try to figure out "why" it turned fully brown.
For the peat moss it's better to repot because that's really compact (I have a video how to repot easily). For the water, it will depend of the TDS (minerals inside the water), if after the filter you have under 100 TDS, yes it's good. ;)
Yes I watched it. I have my nepenthes in a 50/50 perlite peat moss substrate. I have it placed in another pot with water in it that evaporates to create humidity as well as I spray the leaves every couple of hours. I actually learned a lot from your video and that's what I have started doing. This is my first nepenthes and I want to take good care of it
I thought every time the leaves dried out I need to spray them again. I have been a massive care bear to my new carnivorous plant. I finally started trying to take care of other ones then just a venus flytrap. I expect to not be great at this. This video really helped me, thank you!
Hey i have a question. Im keeping my nepenthes 3 types Bloody Mary,Gaya and Ventrata in a glass containers filled with decoration stones and water for humidity. And they stand on a window. Im spraying them once a day. Is it quite okay ? i just bought them ant they have low space from the jars wall like 2 cm free space. No trays water just goes down to the water in the jar and pot have no connection to that water.
Sound OK for the watering, but is your glass container open on the top? Because these nepenthes grow fast! Later hen they get too big, you should be able to use a tray.
@@WindowsillNepenthes hey thx for answering and yes theyre open on the top and later on im planning to put them in aquarium but im gonba watch as they grow and make decisions :)
@@WindowsillNepenthes yeah bro i am using it 100% cocopeat.. although it doesn't hold water for long, so no stagnantion of water... Tiny baby nepenthes are also growing from media
From what I know, lowland nepenthes accept it and nurseries hybrids tolerate it. But as soon as you do that with intermediate or highland species it's dangerous. What hybrid do you have? For how long?
I'm only posting on Reddit, not following. Not a big fan of this forum where people post a "help please" but never do a research for solution as the same questions come over and over. At least on regular forums modo can sort them and the knowledge stays accessible... but in Reddit the knowledge sinks in the post and nobody access it ever again. And I can't be everywhere RUclips taking a lot of my free time. ;)
Sure I could use a watering can 😅, it's just that all my rain water is stocked on cleaned milk can (1 gallon) so transferring the water in a watering can is an extra step and I'm lazy ;)
@@WindowsillNepenthes just pulling your leg. I use a syringe so I know exactly how much they are getting. They are suspended in my windowsill so I can't have them in trays. @@WindowsillNepenthes can't get Maxsea in the UK. I just pop one Osmocote pellet in each adult pitcher as it opens. I do the same with my H. heterodoxa. My sister has rainwater and a south-facing garden, my VFT's and Darlingtonia are there too.
Yes for the humidity control it is key...When growing these plants you want consistent humidity and temperature. So yes some will grow but for them to be happy and flourish it takes similar conditions to the location they came from. With consistent humidity above 50% to 80% your Nepenthes will pitcher more rapidly, consistently and be a healthier plant overall. Happy growing!
@@billlumberg5746 Yes but you can also grow them nicely in "less perfect conditions". And a closed lid on a windowsill could do more harm than good if sun hit on it and cook the plants.

I’ve noticed one leave on my nepenthes Veitchii has turned yellow and brown is that from overwatering?
Good point. I tend to wait 2-3 days. Now I raised the pots using crate so the water never touch the pots but it's right under.
Crazy how your Windowsill looks now🤯
My nepenthes are in an indoor greenhouse.
If I end up killing it idk if I'd find another in person lmao. Subscribes and now I'm binge watching the videos!
P.S; I'm from Canada, Quebec actually, and your accent is reminding me of home ;') best of luck to you!
Thanks 😊 If you have nepenthes questions or topics not yet covered, let me know and I'll try to do a video 😉
@@WindowsillNepenthes I do have one question but I'm not sure if it's video worthy lol
My Nepenthes has a basal shoot. Thank you!
@@HelgrafFireHammer I never tried the zip lock bag but an IKEA mini greenhouse would work
@@WindowsillNepenthes understood, thank you so much! 🤗
Good Job Bro 🤘🏽
Haha 😄 thanks
I have the humidity for my nepenthes set at 80%. And I spray any tendrils with water as often as possible. Is that not necessary? Will they do just fine at 70%? . The light is the first most important thing I think, and then secondary is humidity for the pitchers to form, right?
With 70% or more, you don't need extra care for tendrils 😉 just give it good light.
@@nachmuly Yes, seeds are a possibility. :)
I'll show you the results I got from the last seeds I got in my next video.
Can I use a Globe to water them

I just purchased a nepenthes "lady luck," and re-potting it i see there are actually two plants in the pot. I suppose to make it look full. Should I separate them? Looking at the roots i see two separate starter pots!
You don't jacuzzi l have to. If you separate, you can trade it to get a second species tho. Like Gaya ;)
Hi I have a question. Will mold develop if I put my nepenthes in a 70x70x80cm greenhouse and maintain a 70% humidity?
If you don't have enough airflow it will.
@@WindowsillNepenthes my greenhouse has some little holes in it, Is it enough or do I need to put a whole ventilator inside?
@@Gbiobibibbhoe Usually is not enough. Depending of the size, a computer fan reduced at minimum speed (using a potentiometer) works.

@@WindowsillNepenthes can I put two mini fans running all day instead?
Really interesting video! I have a question for you: How do you collect rainwater?
I usually collect the rainwater from my gutter in buckets and then store them in cans :)
But this year I invested in a rain barrel.
It's a 50 US gal = 190L :D
Isnt rain watet contains mineral which not good for the nep?
Are you using live sphagnum moss here?
Only as top dressing. The substrate is 50/50 sphagnum/Perlite
If the sides of my leaves are going from straight to kind of curling on my nepenthes gaya, is that from too much watering? I watered them a week ago and the pot is still kind of heavy. Or is it nothing?
It's stress. Could be overwatering yes, try to let it dry between watering ;)
Great Video and sympatic guy 👍
Your plants Look like very good 👍
My Nepenthes Macrophylla and platychila x lowii grow also very well, even without a terrarium and i do it just like you do.
I just have peat, perlite mixture with sphagnum planting, for the humidity.
Greetings from Germany :)
You grow N. macrophylla on a windowsill?! So cool!
Now I feel I'll have to try lol
@@WindowsillNepenthes Moin (hey)🙋♂️,
my nepenthes all grow on the windowsill.
i have the window open 24/7, so air circulation is guaranteed and we currently have a great climate for the plants in germany.
I could also send you pictures or a video so that you can convince yourself, but unfortunately it doesn't work here on youtube.😅🤷♂️
Best regards 🙋♂️🙂

Hi manitoba! Miss you
Do you also grow ultra-highlanders like N.diabolica, N.argentii, N.aristolochioides etc.?
No... because they won't accept my windowsill temperature when they will be older.
How do you have so much rain water?
I collect and stock it, mainly in spring and fall (rain season for me).
I put buckets under my gutters 😆
How many times do I spray per day? I don't want to spray too much. I watered it too so the soil is moist.
It depends of your humidity... Do you have more than 50% or less?
Could you say something about identifying nepenthes species?
I could try but it's difficult to ID a Nepenthes, especially with hybrids. ;)
You have a tray full of water, yes. But the pots are raised above the water and don't touch it, so 0% chance of root rot ;)
Yeah I’ve left all my nepenthes in a half inch of water and I’ve never had any of them root rot. Tbf the pots are very tall
Are they lowland species? What substrate do you use?
@@WindowsillNepenthes I use sphagnum moss with perlite 50/50 mixture.
The nepenthes are all either intermediate or lowland. Mostly hybrids as well which are very hardy in terms of acclimation
Do you know how to clone them?
A real clone would be taking a cutting as it's 100% plant and yes, I know how.
if you are talking about tissue culture, from my understanding it's not really cloning as they use seeds.
My plant turned brown and looks dead,Will it grow back?
If it's a few leaves it can come back, if it's the whole plant probably not except if you give it perfect care. Try to figure out "why" it turned fully brown.
@@WindowsillNepenthes Thanks.

can I use filtered water? I got a nepenthes, the common commercial one you can get from big box store. It came with peat moss the growing medium.
For the peat moss it's better to repot because that's really compact (I have a video how to repot easily).
For the water, it will depend of the TDS (minerals inside the water), if after the filter you have under 100 TDS, yes it's good. ;)
can nepenthes have peat moss and perlite?
Sure but do at least a 50/50.
Did you checked my video about the possible substrate?
Yes I watched it. I have my nepenthes in a 50/50 perlite peat moss substrate. I have it placed in another pot with water in it that evaporates to create humidity as well as I spray the leaves every couple of hours. I actually learned a lot from your video and that's what I have started doing. This is my first nepenthes and I want to take good care of it
@@monkeydigs6696 you spray every 2h?
What a commitment! If the humidity is around 50%, a morning and evening spray is enough ;)

To be able to help you, we will need way more information about your Nepenthes...
Good stuff but highly recommend a plastic cover for your Nepenthes.
Why? For the humidity? Some stop species will do just fine with 50% 😉
Yes for the humidity control it is key...When growing these plants you want consistent humidity and temperature.
