    There are many tragedies here, but the greatest is simply that the Russian people as a whole have been cowed for generations in fear of their own governments. The Russian revolution ended up exactly being "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..." or even worse ... in terms of domestic terror and control. The USSR eventually entered a period of Glasnost and some improvement in civil rights, but then the USSR fell apart, Yeltsin ceded power to Putin, and now Russia is right back where it was, or worse.

      I can honestly say that President Zelensky is the politician I respect the most in the modern era. When Russia invaded, the US asked if he needed transport out of the country, and he famously responded with "The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride." I don't think anyone expected just how effective of a wartime leader Zelensky ended up being. A former actor, turned president who refused to flee and instead rallied his people to resist the Russian invasion.
      One thing that I think helps is that he doesn't try to pretend to be some great military strategist. He lets his military advisors and leaders run the military, while he plays the political game and tries to garner support abroad while also acting as a pillar for the Ukrainian people to stand with.
      I firmly believe that if he had fled like many expected, that Ukraine would have capitulated and surrendered to the Russians. Instead they stood proud and have been continuously telling the Russians that Ukraine still stands, and will not bend the knee to Putin.

    Putin's current embarrassment stemming from the Kursk invasion is nothing compared to what's likely to come next: *President Zelensky visiting Ukrainian troops inside Russia!* If this happens (and probably it will) the Russian TV propaganda shows would have a meltdown of epic proportions! Such a visit would hugely ramp up the political pressure on Putin to "do something", but in reality there is little that he can do. He'd be caught between a rock and a hard place.

Corruption is becoming a massive issue, training is insanely poor, equipment is not maintained, the leaders are growing worse and worse as nepotism and fear of Stavka is endemic. At the end of the discussion my Senior Officer looks at me, and said son never forget this discussion, but never forget they still have 10,000 tanks and millions of troops. Quantity at that level will always be a threat, regardless of the quality. That is why we have to maintain our military and in fact strengthen it. Europe can not defeat the Soviets and they are not prepared for it if war comes until that changes or the Soviets do, we have no chance but to keep up our forces and hone them to a fine edge. He showed the world his and his people's spine when he said, "Don't send me a plane (to evacuate)... Send me bullets." He's become the leader Ukraine needed. Throughout history, men and women of good conscience are called to step up when people, community and country need them.
    If I were he, I'd consider telling the world he will resign and call an election once Putin is either dead or retired, all of "annexed" Ukraine returned, and every Russian soldier returned to their mothers. End on a high note and get some well deserved rest!

      Really? A puppet and comic of NATO and US. That is all he is. Soon he will run out of the country with millions of dollars and his people died for no reason. There is no good exit for NATO or US. They are stuck fighting Russia. If Ukraine "losses" the war, Putin will be recognized as the one who defeated NATO, US and Ukraine at the same time. Very embarrassing for them. Forget Zel. This is about NATO and US.

      @xantiom Putin has already moved some, but not enough, troops from the Donbass. Also, troops have been moved from Zaphorizia.
      It is estimated that there are forty thousand Ukranian troops somewhere, I don't know where, uncommitted to battle.
      Z bloggers seem to be panicking, some think that they are preparing to attack in the south, others think elsewhere.
      I would note that all ferry connections to Crimea are now cut. The new railway from Russia through Zaphorizia is unusable as it is within the range of Ukraine. Over the last few months, one calculation (Z blogger) is that Ukraine has destroyed over thirty Russian air defence systems in or around Crimea.
      The fuel depot that has been burning for seven(?) days is a military fuel depot. So far, many of the diesel tanks have gone. Ukraine topped up the fires with another drone strike, I believe, yesterday. The fire is spreading to the avgas tanks. If they go, the explosion will be on another scale, and all the military fuel reserves held at this depot might well go up.

      @petervanwyngaard4788 The Siloviki are the men of power. A combination of the FSB, the military, the police (militia), etc.. Some include the oligarchs and organised crime within that designation. Konstantin (inside Russia, RUclips channel) defines it as those who have a license to use violence inside Russia.
      They originally selected Putin because the FSB, in particular, thought he was one of theirs (KGB as it used to be called), and as middle ranking, middle talent beurocrat he would be controllable. It turned out they were not completely correct in that assumption. :)
      It is the Siloviki who will, one day, get rid of Putin, the Russian people will have no real say. There are some signs that this is starting to happen.

    Slowly it's dawning on the Russians that Ukraine will still be in Kursk come the start of 2025 ... because
    Russia quite simply lacks the means to push them out without withdrawing a very large number of experienced, volunteer troops from Ukraine (conscripts lack the training and fighting spirit to push out the Ukrainians; moreover the death of large numbers of conscripts would cause huge unrest inside Russia, because Putin promised that conscripts would not be engaged in front-line fighting). Moreover, if you look at a map of Kursk to the east and south of the Seym River - an area that Ukraine will soon fully occupy - it is surrounded on 3 sides by Ukraine, with the other side protected by the river itself, across which there are no more bridges. It will take a huge Russian force, suffering massive casualties, to re-capture this area.

      Because these are the 18-21 year old conscripts who were told they wouldn’t be involved in the war.
      Not the volunteers from rural poor areas that no one cares about.

    Remember Potemkin Villages? The facade is crumbling and the world is finally realizing that Russia has always been a Potemkin country.

    • @arthursmith6854
      @arthursmith6854 2 месяца назад +5

      True. All throughout the Cold War, the Soviet Union always made a great effort to appear stronger than they actually were. They were generally successful, too. It was actually a smart thing to do on their part. Unfortunately, the real danger is when you start believing it yourself and then you find yourself in an actual shooting war. This is what has finally happened to Russia.

      This. x100. I studied, lived, and worked in Russia (SPB/Moscow) and Ukraine for several years. Russia is a basket-case.

    • @eastbaystreet1242
      @eastbaystreet1242 2 месяца назад +3

      Yes, as @threethrushes says below, Russia has always been a basket-case. I worked there for a decade and could have told any military expert who asked that it was a facade and the West was grossly overestimating Russia's capability. I was one of very few Americans to have a KGB-issued pass to sensitive sites like airfields, so I got to see more of the inner workings: just junk held together by chewing gum and twine. Most of the funds appropriated to improve and maintain all of the military's equipment were siphoned off and stolen.

      Moskva followed my ship around the Black Sea for a month. She was covered in rust. I could see the corrosion thru binoculars from miles away. If they were neglecting such basic maintenance as the hull, they certainly couldn't keep up with the degradation of more complex systems. We were not impressed.
      It was quite the feeling to hear Ukraine sank her.

      Everyone in Finland knew Russia was a joke. That is why Finland's army is 900.000 trained troops, and not 1.500.000. 64 stealth fighters and not 200. 1700+ artillery pieces and not 3.000. Nuclear vaults for 80% of people and not 100%. You need just enough to utterly demolish the expected enemy without losing more than a shoelace and contact lens.

    Russia has incredible history and diverse geography, they have oil and gas and mineral reserves in spades. They could have joined the Scandinavian countries in building a sovereign wealth fund and ensuring the health, education and prosperity for their people. They could have been an international destination for tourism to rival anything in Europe - the trans Siberian railway has been on my bucket list since before I was old enough to know what that was. Instead they support the lifestyle of a handful of oligarchs, with Putin having a net worth somewhere north of $100 billion from plundering his own people. When will enough be enough? When will the Russian people break the cycle of paranoid autocrats and ensure a better future for their children than being "disappeared" if they demand something better than powerlessness?
