Make sure you're opening the spur gear in an assembly. I had this issue when trying to create a "part" rather than an assembly. Also, if you are receiving a "read-only issue" follow the file path and change the properties within file explorer.
you can also right click the spur gear and open it as a new part..It worked for me.

The problem i have with using a gear from the toolbox is creating a specific diameter that I can mate to an object that I created but thanks.
number of teeth divided by diametral pitch will give you the diameter (in inches)

sir, here during motion study you select motion analysis but in my solidwork there is only i)animation & ii) basic motion ,no motion analysis what's the problem? & what's the solution?
Go to Settings - Add ins. Check the Solidworks Motion box

Why at 2:42 the properties of the spur gear doesnt show diametral pitch? BTW im using the ANSI Metric toolbox library
Make sure you're opening the spur gear in an Assembly.. I had this issue when trying to create a "part" rather than an assembly.
METRIC WILL SHOW "MODULE" INSTEAD
Because the diametral pitch is defined in terms of inches, therefore to input diametral pitch you are supposed to be in ANSI Inch

In my Solidworks After adding and editing spur gears teeth to 36,no change in teeth. It shows 12 teeth as directly from toolbox.
There is an option in drop down "show teeth" change it to number of teeth you desire.

You can put it on a plane, sketch on the plane with the gear and then use the offset tool in the sketch tools.
Sure hope this knowledge is still relevant.

@ 9:47 you say to click on motion analysis. When I open that drop down menu, I only see "animation" and "basic motion". "Motion Analysis" doesn't show.

Toolbox is not available in the student edition. You need to have professional or premium version of SW to have toolbox access.

Shouldn't the inner circle diameters be 2 1/8 and 1 1/16 instead of 2 1/16 and 1 1/8? If you wanted to make the smaller one exactly 50% smaller, that is.
I was stuck in the 9:46 part, it didn't show the option for Motion Analysis, only the other two. Can somebody tell me why is that?

Great video, but I think their is big mistake in this video. While meshing 2 gears they should follow the same gear module (reference gear box design) . But in this video gear module is not considered.
Module (m). Ratio between the pitch circle in millimeters and the number of teeth. Anglo-Saxon countries use the “Diametral Pitch” instead, which is inversely proportional to the module. The value of the module is determined by calculating the material resistance in relation to the force to be transmitted and the gear ratio. Two mating gears must have the same module: m = d/z
Since he is using ANSI inch Diametral Pitch is technically more appropriate but in that sense the module is considered here.
