    Really useful video helped a great deal to do same thing on an NX platform. Would like to forward what I learnt whilst playing with the gears and meshing them. With the method given, when messing helical gears with different number of teeth the messing does not work. I believe this is because the helix angle is projected onto the outside diameter, when it should in fact be projected onto the reference diameter (pitch diameter). Once I'd reconfigured my model to this projection the messing appeared to be perfect. I hope this helps anyone else that's using this method.

    Man.... I learned a LOT watching this video. For starters, looks like I need to spend some time fixing my gesture menu. I had totally forgotten all about that feature. I had a lot of trouble with project curve. For some reason it refuse to build the feature when my sketch was a construction line. I switched it back to a normal line and everything worked perfectly. Thank you so much for this video!

    I think that there are a couple of problems with the way in which you are creating the helical gear. First of all, the helix angle of a gear is defined at the reference diameter which is normally the same as the pitch diameter. In your model, you created a helix along the OD of the gear, and not on the Pitch Diameter.
    In a spur or helical gear, there are two planes that you have to be concerned with. The normal plane and the transverse plane. In a spur gear, the normal plane and the transverse plane are the same. If you define the tooth geometry with a sketch on the face of the gear blank as you did in your example, the pitch and pressure angles would be the same for the normal and transverse planes. However, in a helical gear the normal and transverse planes are not the same. The transverse plane would be the same as the face of the blank, which is a plane that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation to the gear.
    The normal plane is a plane that is normal to the helix angle. In order to draw a helical part correctly, you would need to establish a plane that is perpendicular to the helix angle, and input the Normal pitch and pressure angle. Otherwise if you are creating your sketch in the transverse plane, you would need to create your tooth space using the transverse pitch and transverse pressure angle. These values change with and are dependent upon the helix angle. To get the Transverse Pressure Angle you would divide the tangent of the Normal Pressure angle by the cosine of the helix angle. In the case of circular pitch, you would take your Normal Circular Tooth Thickness and divide it by the cosine of the helix angle to get the Transverse Circular Tooth Thickness. The same would apply to Normal and Transverse Diametral Pitch, as well as Normal and Transverse Circular Pitch.

    • @solidworks
      @solidworks  4 года назад +1

      Hi Jeison! You could create the profile of this gear similarly to the spur and helical gears. For this you would use a Helix feature and Sweep Cut the tooth profile using the Helix as the path.
