His innings of 167 vs Australia, was a perfect class inning and 66 in 47 balls vs India at Eden garden in semi final of 1996 world cup proved attack is the best defense. Love you Arvinda by heart
There was the time in 97 -98 where Aravinda always used to make 100 against India and me as an Indian fan hated seeing him sweeping Anil Kumble for boundary. In 1996 semi final he single handedly defeated us, after loosing two wickets in first over no one believed the counter attack he did, I remember he made 66 of 47 balls that too in 1996. Great batsman.
Sachin played a similar shot against Atur-ur-rahman in Sarjaha in 1994, but Arvinda's came against Lee, even more impressive. I can search and post video of the other one.
It takes great bravery and the sharp eye as the fuel to play a hook and pool shots..I never know how brave he was to wear that helmet without the metal net. Jayasurya at least used to give you a lot of chances, but getting Aravinda out was very difficult. Back in school days, used to have a lot of free time. It was always a pleasure to watch the battles between Aravinda De Silva and Kumble, and Saqlain. If I am not wrong, Aravinda had interest in Car racing, and he chose Cricket over Car racing as a career. Can someone from Sri Lanka confirm?
Aravinda DeSilva holds the bat like a sword, I am not a Srilankan but a huge fan of this Elegant Hero. He should have played in 3rd position all throughout his life and he should have created flood of runs. As some one said Sachin or Lara might be Monsters but DeSilva is a different Monster

He has hit more beautiful sixes to Pakistan. I remember watch some of the sixes he has hit in South Africa against Pakistan 93/94. Also 1985 test match also. But all time favourite is the six against Lee. Caribbean leg glance
In an interview, I saw Sanath Jayasuriya tell the reason for Aravinda's excellence in batting was his batting grip and stance on the crease due to which he seemed to have more time to plan & execute his shots at the last moment - than any other batsman. It seemed very true after seeing this video compilation of Aravinda's greatest sixers. Truly Aravinda de Silva is the Viv Richards of Sri Lankan cricket.
I remember in the mid-90s, De silva scored a couple of hundreds against Pakistan in Sharjah. In one match he walk down the pitch and smashed waqar younus for a huge straight six. Couldn't find that video anywhere on the internet.
