      @Darth Apex the topshot is 33 yards of 80lb mono for abrasion resistance from the pilings and then about 400 yards of 40lb mono.

    Here in Panama City Beach, trolley lines are forbidden on the piers.
    Instead, we use 12 to 20lb line with a single wire leader about 2'-3' long with a treble hook, no weight or sinker.
    Best bait is a cigar minnow hooked through the eyes. Cast out as far as you can throw and slowly reel it in. Artificial lures do work but not as well as natural bait.
    The waters here are crystal clear.
    You can see the kingfish hit your bait. Once it hits, you let it run with tension on the drag until it stops it's initial run, then the fight is on as you reel it back to the pier.
    Awesome fun. Once it's back to the pier, it's usually wore out and a gaff line is used to pull it up on to the pier deck.
    Kingfish are the main attraction at the piers but there are many other fish caught here.

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  6 лет назад +2

      Thomas Morman yeah I have seen someone use a "trolley rig" similar to our slide line except instead of throwing a 10oz-12oz surf weight they use a treble hook and get it stuck on some shell or whatever is on the bottom. In this video I showed the whole fight of the Kingfish minus 7-8 seconds the GoPro took to turn on once I heard the clicker initially. It hit on the back rail and went around to the front. Once I went under the other rods I bumped the drag a couple of clicks, yanking the Kingfish back lol and that's when the camera turns on. It was like watching one of those backpack prank videos where the guy steals a backpack, starts running, then all of a sudden they get yanked back and fall on their rear because the backpack was tied to a telephone pole lol.

      The standup rods are just a basic wrap, so that shouldn't be hard to do. I know Roy's Bait and Tackle does basic wraps and Chevrons so you might want to reach out to them. Now the fancy wraps like the fish wrap, etc, you might have to look harder to find someone that actually knows what they are doing to get it perfect.

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  6 лет назад

      Wesley Johnson Wesley Johnson pretty much the same thing except the clicker part (most spinning reels don't have a clicker). When line comes out of a spinning reel you will hear a little noise but it won't be as loud as a dedicated clicker from a conventional reel. So just don't walk too far away from your rod/reel or you might not hear it go off.

    Great how to video. And catch, what would you say is the best way to use bait for kingfish, the float or slide line. What are advantages to both, especially if not equipped curbside line....thanks🎣

      Not curbside...sideline..😳

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  4 года назад

      @@treshijasfishing2378 thank you. The advantage to slide lining is you can have your bait right at the top of the water. Another advantage is you can use larger baits like mullet or a strong swimmer like a Blue Runner. The downside to a slide is that you need 2 rods so depending on where you are fishing and if they have a certain rod limit then it might not be efficient. The advantage for the float is that you only need 1 rod and you can set it up pretty much anywhere. The disadvantage of the float is you can't really fish a larger bait like a mullet or Blue Runner without constantly checking it. Blue Runners LOVE to go under the pier and wrap around the pylons. We've caught plenty of Kingfish on slidelines and floats so for us it is about equal. Some people exclusively fish slidelines for Kingfish then they see us catch 1 on a float then all if a sudden they want to fish a float 😂. We like to use mostly Pinfish and sometimes use mullet, watermelon shad and blue runner. Some people like using Ribbonfish (Atlantic Cutlassfish). I've been fishing where Kingfish are hitting every kind of bait, some days they only hit watermelon shad, some days only blue runner and some days Pinfish. It just depends.

      blownZ713 People definitely slide line with only one rod but we prefer to use 2 rods for a few reasons. 1) with 2 rods we can fine tune where in the water column the bait sits on the fly with 1 rod you'd have to change leaders. Especially if you want the bait frantically splashing on top of the water. 2) When kings and Spanish are thick you're gonna get cut off with 1 rod. Your bait is gonna be doing circles right by your mainline.

    So it that looked like a pen senator 113 H sends out the bait. Where do you buy /make the rigs that catch the kings? I've never fished off the beach or pier for them only offshore, that was a great gaff shot by the way. THEY have caught some monsters up in Jacksonville in the 50 lbs + range.

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you, yeah we catch some Kingfish in the 50" range off the pier usually the big ones are caught off shore. The Penn 113 has an 8oz - 10oz spider weight and we cast it out. Then we clip on a slide line clip to that line and slide the bait down. When a fish hits the bait the wire comes out of the slide line clip and then the slide line clip slides down to the surf weight and we fight the fish on the TLD.

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  5 лет назад +1

      We like to use circle hooks size 4/0 to 7/0 depending on the size of the bait being used. We catch Kingfish on Curado baitcasters so line capacity is not a huge factor but I'd say 150 yards minimum. Our reels have 450 to 500 yards of line but we're going after big Tarpon.

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  5 лет назад

      Great question! There is a few reasons. 1 Kingfish tend to feed towards the upper part of the water column. I am not saying you can't catch them on the bottom but you have a better chance of catching them on the top. 2 it keeps the bait away from other fish that tend to eat on the bottom such as gafftop, reds, sharks, etc.

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  4 года назад

      @idk yes you can adjust the drag when hooked up with a fish. with Avets and other lever drag reels included there is a lever that increases/decreases the drag and goes into freespool. On lever drag reels there is a preset knob on the lever and you tighten/loosen this depending on how much drag you want to fish. So on my Avet I have the strike drag set at about 11 pounds and when I go to full it is about 16 pounds. If I wanted the drag lower/higher then I would put the lever into freespool then adjust the preset (clockwise for increased or counter clockwise for decreased) then move the lever to strike and check the drag with a pull scale.

      Hardly anyone (if anyone at all) throws lures for Kingfish at the end of this pier. Almost everyone that is going for Kingfish uses a slide line in our area. If you look at 0:45 there is 3 slide lines in the right corner (3 different fishermen) and then 2 floats to the left of them. OMG! Im not talking about how to catch the baitfish....Im talking about the principles of a slide rig....... Looks like you have one rig set up with a "slide line"? How far out are you casting the the rod with anchor line? How deep do you want that baitfish to go when its hooked to the slide line? Also it looks like you have another pole rigged with some kind of a float and a baitfish and letting it swim around the pier?

    • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing  3 года назад

      @@lakemarine484 I wanted to make a slide line video but this year at the pier was pretty slow not to mention a Hurricane took it down and now we can't fish on it. On the long rod (anchor rod) we tied a 10oz spider weight straight to the mono and casted about 60 yards or so (distance isn't that important imo). Then on your fighting rod (shorter stand up / boat rod) you have a leader with your hook attached that you attach to the anchor rod with a slide line clip. You can then make the drop as long or as short as you want depending on how deep you want your bait. We like our bait right below the water surface. The other rod has a float on steroids on it. You can make the leader on the float as long or as short as you want. The current and waves keep the Pinfish away from getting wrapped under the pilings from the pier. If you put a strong swimming bait like a Blue Runner get ready for it to wrap around the pilings 100 times before you notice it.
