Schizophrenia doesn’t exist because reality is not permanent, it is different for every person here on earth. Noone knows the true nature of reality. But it is dependent on beliefs, language, life experience e.t.c. Remember to find your own interpretation of what has happened to you so that you can grow and become stronger from it. Like you are doing here. Remember to be patient because it does take time. You are NOT broken x

So glad to have found this! I went through a terrifying experience after having a ceremony with a shaman in Indonesia. I asked via a translator to have my spiritual eyes opened. Well I got what I asked for! Too much to tell but I was spiritually and mentally torn apart. Despite displaying most symptoms of schizophrenia (thankfully I didn't seek medical help) I continued a "normal" life and no one saw me as any different. It took a about 18 months but I came out (via dreams, reading Jung etc) literally born again, cleared of life's traumas that had stopped me from being the person I was born to be.

Incredible story. What a learning journey. It's still a slog with psychedelic challenges thrown in, yet the evidence in psilocybin therapy so far, points towards a desire to live again as a treatment for resistant depression.
Yours is a story that shows guidance through processing and integration will make for a gentler transition.

I must add previous to this experience (quite a time before) I had taken a large dose of DMT which rocked my reality but the shamanic experience was without drugs. I think this made the experience more intense as I actually thought despite having to ride motorbikes way up into the jungle into a village that could have been a thousand years ago, it was just for tourists... When the young woman (not called a shaman but Dukun) turned into an ancient hag muttering in the old Batak language only her husband knew who translated to my translater, right in front of my eyes that I realised this was real and what I had asked for out of the ceremony was foolish and arrogant in the extreme. Suffice to say I paid my dues and learned to stop jumping in rashly and worrying about the consequences later.

Having myself experienced a wide spectrum of spiritual emergency and mystical revelations from adolescence and through decades beyond, I have been able to help and continue to help many people navigate and evolve in the process of awakening to our Eternal Identity, a process we are all doing, all the time. Jules Evans beautifully and humbly expressed his experience and ongoing understanding of this "journey without distance". Thank you, Jules. I would like to share that when opening oneself to the transcendent, whether voluntarily, involuntarily, drug-induced or grace-induced, imho the most critical need one has is a Guide, Guru, Master, either in human body or ascended, and a community of human companions who are familiar with these phases. To be alone, isolated and not understood is both cause and effect of a spiritual emergency without this support. Raising awareness and offering support is a most loving function and service.

Thank you for shedding light on these very important subjects that our culture don’t want to deal with and they end up getting shoved aside because they’re too scary. Spiritual emergency is very real and I’ve been and still going through it many years after it started, and luckily I have found good guides and wisdom along the way to help me cope and integrate. My cousin went through an extreme case of this emergency and eventually his doctors diagnosed him with schizophrenia and he ended up taking his own life because he couldn’t handle it anymore. I hope that our culture and world will start looking at these issues more openly and non-judgmentally like the Rebel Wisdom channel.

Whether or not this presentation is any kind of accurate representation or clear commentary on the numinous, I felt it an earnest one. We need more and more people at the forefront who are prepared to provide first aid to people in the shock of "waking up" at whatever level it may be. I believe this is an evolutionary step, and unfortunately due to our history, it is a journey fraught with danger. But I cannot deny that we are in the throes of en evolutionary breakdown. I have had a few of these experiences, and luckily, I had the luxury of time to allow for the deconstruction of certain egoic patterns to be observed and integrated from somewhat of a "witnessing" stemming from meditation. My saving grace was a simple two word command given to me by my guru at the time, " SUSPEND INTERPRETATION." To this day, I fail to find a working explanation for my experiences. I simply focus on the evolving compassionate attitude I have for the construct termed "I" that navigates my life. But the older I get, the easier it seems to shy away from the unhinged sensations and emotions that naturally arise when these things come up. For many, that is not a choice. For me, I have the privilege of feeling safe from these states. At least for now.

David, I am so grateful to you and your team (and to Jules in this case - I also read the book Breaking Open) - for all of the material you are releasing on this topic. I also experienced a breaking open during an ayahuasca ceremony 7 years ago, it wasn't the first time I had had an experience but this literally blew me out of my body - well it seemingly was a kundalini awakening - the years that followed my reality totally shifted and it was traumatic a lot of the time - I was lost and confused, although at the time I felt like I was living in the 'real' world I was totally disconnected. There was no handbook to guide me at all. It was so difficult to find people to relate to - I didn't really know what was happening to me. It has taken a long time to come back down to earth and begin living in the world again - and that in itself was a journey of processing and re-integration and still continues. What seems to be unfolding is living life in a completely new way, as in being reborn. Unfortunately I wasn't really surrounded by people who understood, I was travelling and bouncing from place to place in and out of communities with people who were probably just as lost as me (many of whom I imagine still are !). Trying to figure out what happened and piece it all together has been so much easier thanks to you introducing people such as Stan Grof and Jules here and the many others I have begun to read and follow. The awakening processes is not pretty and can be challening and I have found there to be many layers of healing that one needs to address, from many different modalities before we can really claim to be sovereign and fully healed and integrated humans in the world. Just a note also, that I also could not read many books or watch movies - I could however watch teachers such as Mooji and connect with books by Adyashanti and anything which transmitted 'spiritual' teachings.

I had this life changing out of body experience which was triggered by a certain tone of background piano music while playing around on the silkweave website, when certain pattern seemed to sync with a certain melodic progression which triggered a sudden remembering of floating through deep space without a body, triggering what I can only describe as sudden 360 degree explosion of my normal static awareness and sense of self, where the "bottom fell out" so to speak, and surreal and non ego state types of unconditional understanding, love, reverence, appreciation, and acceptance towards every moment of my life, all the actions of others, and the natural world itself.
Like a loving creating state, where I operated in an open, enthusiastic, authentic manner, not from ego or thought or reaction, but from a place of knowing, causing me to immediately quit smoking cigarettes the second it happened, with zero withdrawal symptoms. It the supernatural qualities to it faded for 3 days, after which my normal ego and focal point of engaging with the world gradually took hold again.
It was like a thick fog returning into my mind and disorienting me and making me forget the connection to intuitive knowing as a way of being, rather than thinking and ego and clutching to old known reactions.

    Hello Rebel Wisdom,
That’s great to see there is more awareness being brought to the topic of spiritual emergency in recent years. It is also quite interesting to learn about all those historical cases, yet one thing is to discuss and analyze it from historical perspective and another is to work in the field with those who are going through it. One teacher, named Igor Kufayev has been doing both, working hands-on with the actual cases as well as bringing greater awareness of psychologists and psychiatrists towards the urgent need to re-evaluate our understanding of what spiritual emergency represents...

@@JulesEvans I based my rather brief comment on the content of the video rather than the title. Steiner mapped out a method for avoiding the "emergency" aspect. By following this method of personal development one encounters spiritual awakening in a measured way according to one's stage of development. Nothing is forced. The book that maps out this path is called "How to know higher words" and can be found here: www.amazon.co.uk/How-Know-Higher-Worlds-Anthroposophy-ebook/dp/B0029XFF6U#:~:text=Published%20in%201904%20(CW%2010),-This%20is%20the&text=illumination%2C%20and%20initiation.-,Steiner%20provides%20practical%20exercises%20of%20inner%20and%20outer%20observation%20and,thus%20far%20concealed%20from%20us. Jules Evans also looking around Steiner’s work, he lectured on the Human Organs, and how premature release of life forces from particular organs, such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, spleen, lungs, liver etc... triggered psycho spiritual experiences. This is just a tiny nut shell... see ‘Man on the Threshold’ by Bernard Lievegoed. ‘The Human Organs’ by Walter Holtzapfel. ‘Jung and Steiner, the birth of a new psychology’ by Gerard Wehr. Just a few examples. Again in a nut shell Steiner spoke about the importance of stringent internal training so that one can integrate spiritual experiences... trauma can occur, and vice versa trauma can trigger spiritual experiences.... Steiner lectured about all this... in 1920s, so pleased that you mentioned Grof’s work in ‘Spiritual Emergency’ as this resonates so deeply with Steiner’s insights.

Surely the forced effort of trying to have a spiritual experience in order to analyse, research and compare it with the experiences of others, with the preconceived purpose of writing an academic book, blocks you from just allowing the experience and experiencing your spirituality fully?

    • @JulesEvans
      @JulesEvans 4 года назад +2

That's a valid point. I'd already had a spontaneous spiritual experience in my 20s, and was looking for how to make sense of it and repeat it. Being a writer, I wrote about this journey, and there was some analysis involved as well. I think you have to bring your reason along with you, you cant - or shouldn't - entirely ditch it. But yes, at a certain point you have to go beyond analysis.

I think to have a 100% pure ego-free experience is impossible short of a malfunctioning brain. It is just an ideal to aim towards. Noting and making conscious efforts to interpret an experience while it is happening is going to influence/inhibit it, but so does a number of other mental processes, hormone levels etc. So, you have the post-modern analysis correct. Where to from there? If we are going to understand the experience better we need people like Jules bringing back insights, to be understood probabilistically and triangulated across individuals towards general insights.

Well, you can't force an esoteric experience, but you can induce one with enthogens. Analyzation is key to understanding the experience.
The greater risk is reading other books and utilizing their answers rather than resolving your own questions (quest) for your self.
My thought, as regards your thought, is as you say in comparing it to the experiuence of others before you have solidified the meaning of the experience in your own mind. Now I am looking to do comparisions, such as with Joseph Campbell's monomyth cycle.
If I understand your question, statement trying to over analyze for academic purposes, will undercut the experience and dilute if not totally negate the psychological purpose. (maybe?)

Thank you for your insights. Your work is Edifying.
Totally relate to the problem these 'emergencies' incite in the process of critical thinking.
I was awaken early to the underlying reality. TheseTwo defining events from my childhood.
"Mine was the first generation baby sat and raised by “T.V.”, the nick name of our favorite nanny. We would sit in rapture as she told us stories of wonder, entertaining us from the moment we woke in the morning, until we went to sleep at night. We were mesmerized, hypnotized by her comforting presence in our living rooms. The damage television does to the neuro network of children, by overstimulating the brain, was generally unknown at the time. Yet, the effect on psychological processes, at the unconscious level, was being utilized by Hollywood and investigated by the gov’t. The gov’t hoped, through television programming, to produce a patriotic mindset in an ever more discerning and disenchanted population."
    ******************************* ********************************* ************************************
"The sixties saw an end to a unique moment in time, as portrayed in “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Leave it to Beaver”. Back then, before seven am, television programing was dedicated to community service. I was standing in the living room, listening to my Nanny. Watching a T.V. program supposedly designed to teach people English. My Nanny asked a question in a sanguine voice. “Is it as it is”? Waking me to consciousness and the world in a most uncomfortable way. The T.V. went on quickly to assure me things were indeed as they seemed. “It is as it is”, it soothed. Too late! A seemingly simple, innocuous question, but to a child just starting to conceive reality, it was frightening. Is it as it is? Is it how it seems? How would or could I know? You cannot undo the ringing of a bell. The question had taken hold of me. How could I possibly know if anything was as it seemed? Why would or should I take comfort or believe any answer given to this troubling question? "
    *********************************** ************************************** ***********************************
"The existential crisis is a known catalyst, key component in development of the awakened awareness. In fifth grade I was once again confronted with an existential crisis. I was reading a graphic horror story. In the story a man had a recurring dream where he dreamt he was a spider, caught in a scorpion’s claws. Eventually the story revealed the man was a spider, caught in a scorpion’s claw, dreaming he was a man, who was dreaming he was a spider. I have had bad dreams where I wished and hoped it was a dream. Sometimes it was a dream, other times it was not. The philosopher’s quandary, how do we know this world we experience is real and not a dream? We only know our dreams as dreams, after we awaken. "
    (Excepts from my writings)
Being exposed to the concept of reality as a dream at such a young age has profound and most often catastrophic results.
Look forward to following your thoughts.

My rational mind is so afraid of this because I'm scared that this could get me into trouble. I've been trying to let go of the feeling like I should do it, but so far, it hasn't gone anywhere. Besides the fear I also feel very curious about what would happen if I would go and I also feel like I would be able to handle whatever would after all that I've experienced, I just don't know how wise it would be to put myself in the posistion again.
I would really love to hear how others see this, if there are people out there who can identify with this feeling or have any idea if this is safe or something that I shouldn't even allow myself to consider. I hope that there's someone out there who would like to share their thoughts with me! Thank you for reading this if you did!

A disassociation is usually a reaction to the ego experiencing an overwhelming amount of anxiety. Reality becomes too much and so a withdrawal from the senses occurs, hence the presenter not being able to take in books and films etc. To me it sounds as though the trip was on a level traumatic, and he was unable to integrate the experience in a meaningful way, as a result he disassociated himself from reality. It is only by his experiencing of proofs of love and goodness from his friends that unconsciously he was able to reaffirm the goodness of reality, to trust it, and so begin to reintegrate his outer world with his inner.
Not to take away from his experience, but he was very lucky that A) he likely already has a history of good experiences in his past in order to serve as a bulwark against the onslaught of such a psychedelic experience (whereby the user is barraged by a heap of unconscious material, unconscious because it is disagreeable to the person) and that B) he was surrounded by good people to ease him back into reality.
If either of these two points were missing, there is a possibility that a person who undergoes such a trip and disassociates, they may not come back. Psychosis is a defence mechanism against the experience of pain in reality.

My life is ruined from this and I have other people talking in my head. No one talks to me or relates to me except to make my regular shows in public a prison og gratuitous and unspoken hatred and shame just for catching the bus somewhere and being seen by other people in public. I feel like my aura gives off a presence that causes derision from people who look at me. It's hard to live life like this. I also have lost my ability to communicate with words so I'm never making friends or getting help or communicating so that my needs are met. I have something really important I need to say and I have no one for support. My life feels beyond my means to get on my feet. The trauma doe not get dealt with and I have no idea how to get back to regular society.

Spiritual Emergency or ecstatic experience being suggested, by Jules Evans, as one going from mental fitness to mental illness may just as likely (or perhaps more appropriately) seen as just the opposite...one going from a state of mental illness (at whatever point on the continuum) to new states of mental, spiritual, emotional fitness. The transition may be difficult as the infrastructure of one's poorly built, "unhealthy" life is reconstructed with stronger and more meaningful materials. Think 3 little pigs (going from sticks to bricks). He has some good insights, but I found his attempts to demystify the mystical a bit off the mark and presumptious, more certainty than is warranted, in my opinion (from a group sampling that leaned heavy on the psychiatric). It's ridiculous to try to homogenize the diagnosis of such experiences, suggesting a sort of textbook sameness, with the only variable being how one frames the experience (same portrait, different frame).
His Dia-GNOSIS did not resonate, but it was presented nicely.

Hey Jules, if you want to find out a different perspective on other states of consciousness that don’t fall into the corridor of opposites like “spirituality” and “psychosis” you may care to consider the logical and rational approach of Jiddu Krishnamurti who definitely experienced deep psychological crisis as a natural occurrence and emerged from it without assistance from others.
Krishnamurti’s teachings reveals that the only crisis for humanity exists in consciousness which means the content which is gathered by self-centred memory (personal and collective) is the mischief maker due to the traditional society’s conditioning through the images that lie undetected as abstract knowledge and experience, but nevertheless actively influencing the psychological awareness and understanding of daily living.
Freedom from the past can occur naturally without effort, direction or use of will by understanding the powerful force of negation/ mutation/ creation simultaneously. This is only possible by the fact of ‘what is’ not ‘what was’ or ‘what should be’ because the fact doesn’t condition the mind, but everything else (non-fact) does. So the ordinary or special content of psychological memory (images) is the contamination preventing access to the freedom inherent in the other dimension of consciousness that’s ever new because it was never old.

    • @JulesEvans
      @JulesEvans 4 года назад

Definitely think Krishnamurti's process had aspects of a spiritual emergency to it - unsurprising, as he suffered a lot of trauma as a boy (not least from the monstrous Charles Leadbeater). I think his mistake was then to take his experience as proof that he was somehow enlightened or the World Teacher, to the point where he pretended to have no ego or even no remembrance of the past. Which was bullshit, to be honest.

    • @grahaminglis4242
      @grahaminglis4242 4 года назад

      @ Jules Evans
Your reply is centred around the early connection of Krishnamurti with the Theosophical movement before he denounced the World Teacher nonsense therefore it ignores the after period which included a monumental psychological emergency at Ojai California after the death of his brother.
From that crisis onwards Krishnamurti emerged as a solo figure of immense energy and compassion/wisdom who travelled through most of the non-communist countries engaging with public audiences and selected interviews with leaders of many theological persuasions and intellectuals from philosophy backgrounds with only one viewpoint - to set mankind FREE.
The worthiness in Krishnamurti’s teachings is that through serious investigation into the limitations of fragmented consciousness that pervades the traditional mainstream society’s principles of accumulating knowledge/experience of a psychological nuanced perspective on life can be seen in their inherent incompleteness and consequently need to be totally set aside due to the fact that it consists largely of abstract dead images occupying virtually all the space in the brain cells that harbour memory. The uniquely powerful effect of the clean out by negation/mutation/creation simultaneously is the emergence of other states of consciousness which may be called nothingness or singularity, the ground or essence of meditation which requires no system, practice or special effects of acquired knowledge/skill or particular/collective effort.
Self knowing of “what is” as a comprehensive fact in relation to the daily living phenomena (without any images) is the simple but elusive key to the immensity of life in what scientific theory might equate with quantum consciousness. So if you are stuck in discussions about psychosis and spirituality you may be blind to the far more intriguing aspects of holistic consciousness which exists beyond the squabbling that’s common to the intellectual concepts pervading RUclips sites.

I found this interesting but the cognitive articulation identifies part of the problem many people have with spiritual emergency issues. A culture that is too familiar with the energy of the mind at the expense of the body. Be more grounded, be more disciplined, the wisdom traditions of the east promote yoga, tia chi and qi gong for a reason. The body needs to be cleansed of traumas and injuries. The foundations need to be in place to have a steady footing to reach the heights of transcendental states. If the foundations and discipline are not in place then you will likely end up confused, lost, lead astray. The mystical path is simple, but we are conditioned to not follow this way.

I have one simple question: WHY is anyone looking to the US for leadership, guidance, as any kind of exemplar or example while pursuing these questions? Americans are utterly infantilised, and the impulse in Brits to trot along after them is, in my view, a bad one. In my experience with Americans in the past couple of years, particularly with ayahuasca in Peru, almost all of them seemed to be looking for nothing other than a new church to spoon-feed them from wherever their last spoon-feeding gimmick had left off. Sorry, but no.

Why does anyone look for leadership?
Connect to God, personally. Be a leader within your family and community. Purposely follow those who you trust. Most importantly, treat persons as individuals- don’t assume you know a person because you know some superficial thing about them.
America is 330,000,000 persons. Your description doesn’t describe many.
The psyops they’re pulling on us requires we buy into their collectivism. Please try to avoid it.

@@-astrangerontheinternet6687 Psyops? I'd just call it a kind of cultural hegemony to which the anglosphere is very responsive -- far too responsive. Perhaps especially the English. They've imported Americanism wholesale into news delivery, the media more widely, film, and I suppose this is understandable to an extent because the products of a dumbed-down culture industry are easier to sell than anything challenging, but the impact of it is appalling.
And I don't believe in "God".

You have beliefs about how the universe and life began, I imagine.
If you do- those are questions of “god”
Collectivism concerning god was easily “their” first psyop.

... I would like much more participation, or understanding of Indian, Asian and/or indigenous wisdom from Australia, Pacific Ocean islanders and Africans... they have had older linage of wisdom than Europe. Just to give a minute example. Nothing new about Jung. Aboriginals of Australia and especially continent of India have spoken about the significance of dreams... western culture, to a degree, arrogance, have cunningly hacked ancient wisdom... by doing so, it just shows another level of smitten ignorance by the west...
