    Thanks for your feedback! It's clear there's a mixed reaction, and in particular that there's nostalgia for the more Medieval original design from Morrowind.
    In this case, we wanted the entry-level armor to look the part. The OG armor was iconic, but it had little character and looked considerably more capable and intact than its stats. We get that not everyone loves our iron armor, and while that makes us sad, in the grand scheme of things, it's just one armor set - a small experience change, and a very big job to consider reworking.
    I realize this might sound like "we'll do what we want", and in total honesty, that's true to a degree. There's no way to remake a game without making decisions about the original intent, about the balance and variety of the game, and about what we think will make a good experience. We're fundamentally capturing what Morrowind might have been. This isn't a new direction - we've done the same since the conception of the project.
    That said, we've taken on board the graphical feedback, thanks - our pipeline has improved since this set was implemented, and Zix and Dal (who both deserve huge respect for their mammoth input into the project, by the way) have applied better shaders, and made changes to the texture. We'll also likely include mirrored pauldrons for those who prefer symmetry.

      Would you consider offering both styles of pauldron as their own separate items? Not that it’s necessary but it would be cool to have the options.

    • @tesrskywind
      @tesrskywind  8 месяцев назад +16

      Yup, that's precisely what I mean in the final sentence. The pauldrons are already split into left and right, and separate from the cuirass - so we'll look to include mirrored versions of both.

      Bro, it's not the nostalgia, it's just, while the model is good looking, it's kinda generic fantasy design, sorry to say. Morrowind design's charm is exactly in having a little fantisised "medieval inspired" armors longside bizzare designs, like chitin set.
      Edit: also, who stops the you, guys, from incorporating different variations of the same material gor arnors.

    Eh, honestly the vanilla armor looks much better. In that it actually looks like real life medieval European iron armor. Which is the entire point. I also agree with what a lot of people in the comments are saying, that most of us were hoping this was going to be a strict remastering of the game, not a reimagining. In that everything would be literally the exact same style, etc, only what it would be like if the game was made now instead of then.

Maybe as an additional set for a specific NPC it could work, but not as a standard iron armor.

    Why are you redesigning things like this? We want to play Morrowind - why not just try to keep it as close to 1:1 as possible? Things like this, along with the writing changes and the changes to vampirism, are making me think you're doing too much, and way more than is necessary. The magic of Morrowind is in its design -- don't fall into a trap of thinking you can design it better. Especially the writing - no one is writing better than the original Morrowind writers.

      Yep. It does appear far more ornate than the original. The original is a simple design that follows more real-world medieval designs. Metal plate armor wasn't made with a lot of ornament or form simply because it is faster, cheaper and easier to form a flat piece of metal into a place and leave it. Cutting holes in the helmet, making a visor, adding shape to the pauldrons, all of that is a bit "extra" for something that would be cheap armor for commoners.

It's a good armor design- it's just unfortunately not a good remaster of the original if that's what you were going for. also, stylistically i think it feels too nordic or skyrim-y in terms of looking really worn. having that worn look for the dark elf armor is a good idea, but modelling the imperial designs that way ruins the wonderful dichotomy of the powerful empire having a foot here in a very different land. it muddies the two together into 'ash wasteland' instead of playing the empire's strengths and letting the two tell a different story.

    @saladinbob 8 месяцев назад +21

    I'm going to give you a brutally honest assessment. That is one of the most poorly designed armours I've ever seen and Oblivion's version was infinitely better. Allow me to explain why. You have taken an armour that offered very good protection and redesigned it to include several significant weak spots. The neck has no projection from any blow coming from the right, and the cuisse - thigh plates - don't fit correctly. Compare that to the original and those areas are protected. Furthermore Pauldron is designed rounded so that blows to the shoulder are deflected down and away from the neck, all your frill on the left shoulder would do is increases the chance of dislocation. It's a truly awful design.

    • @saladinbob
      @saladinbob 8 месяцев назад +9

      BTW if you where so inclined to reconsider the design, for whatever its worth, here's how to improve it. Redesign the leg armour in line with the concept art that gets it right and remove all but one of the frills on the shoulder. Reduce its length to about half and move it closer to the neck. Finally add a collar to the neck. These minor changes eliminate all the week spots and make the armour look much better.

  • @eni1else
    @eni1else 8 месяцев назад +3

    Not sure why it was decided that it needed a total redesign. The pauldrons and helmet in particular are the original set's most defining features and should have been left that way. More nitpicky would be the choice to make every slot except the head asymmetrical. The right-hand side is sensible but the left-hand side is silly. The dissonance is kind of jarring. Two plates on the front and back of the right thigh, but just one on the left and it's offset to the outside. Normal mitten gauntlet on the right hand, claws for knuckles on the left. Normal sleeves on the right arm, bicep band of unknown function on the left. Normal overlapping plates on the right shoulder, idek on the left.
    Also, if the goal of the redesign really was to make it look more like a low level armor, there's way too much embellishment for that. The fur lining, the skirt, the claws, the armband, the circles on the chest, whatever's going on with the upper third chest plate where it seems to tuck in under itself, and the over stylized pauldron - all these things make it look more like a mid game set than "adventurer's first heavy armor"

    I wouldn't mind the drastic change as much if it kept the same shape for the helmet as the original, and the fur on the curiass was dropped. I also think it looks a bit... dull? It could use a more metallic polish or shine to it to show that it is indeed metal because at the moment it looks more boney. Maybe darkening the metal would help?

  • @husky3g
    @husky3g 7 месяцев назад +2

    I like it but I definitely would have preferred the original helmet design. As someone who has dabbled in metalworking, a flat face/rounded helmet that is one piece like the original is actually faster/easier to make out of a sheet of metal. The amount of fasteners and cutting required makes the helmet on the newer model appear more ornate, therefore less utilitarian and simple for those that can't afford ornate armor armor like bonemold, Dwemer or others.

I like the idea you’re going for with a makeshift look, but I feel it would be better suited as an additional armor set that’s like a tier below iron armor. Maybe a unique set. Something like “makeshift (iron) armor” or “antique iron armor” Don’t get me wrong I love a lot of the other armors you’ve shown in the past (especially bonemold and imperial silver) but this and the Indoril armor are just not it imo. Using creativity to add details to low poly models that weren't there previously is awesome, but completely redesigning the armor seems like a waste of resources. I imagine just adding in some cool details / making adjustments for it to work in the current engine would have gone over better with players and been less design work overall. The armor looks cool, but it looks like it's from Dark Souls moreso than Elder Scrolls. Perhaps makeshift armor a bandit or reaver would wear, but certainly not a mass produced iron armor

    I feel I must suggest to get some chainmail under those plates (otherwise they seem useless, full protection is full protection) instead of clothes and to put a good chunk of plate behind the head (to even see the hairs is awkward) and a chainmail hood to cover the neck. Plates need leather or gambeson to give some comfort, heat and protection against blunt weapons and chainmail to further enhance protection against slashes and a bit against strikes and thrusts.
    Just as a personal taste, I suggest removing the stripes over the pauldron because they don't offer any protection at all, they blind the knight when in guard, are very expensive to make, easy to bend and costly to repair. Maybe the lateral ones can stay, they make a romanish look, but the central one, I think, needs to go.

    • @Rigel_6
      @Rigel_6 8 месяцев назад

      You mean the deflecting part on left shoulder? I see it as something purely practical for shield users, since it offers extra protection to shoulder/head from a strike that slips over the guard. But yeah, it'd be better to leave only the central one, since you want strikes to deflect off armor, not get locked on it - the primary reason why horned helmets are stupid
